Group invariants in algebras of generalized functions

We study invariance properties of Colombeau generalized functions under actions of smooth Lie transformation groups. Several characterization results analogous to the smooth setting are derived and applications to generalized rotational invariance are given.

Generalized Group Actions in a Global Setting

We study generalized group actions on differentiable manifolds in the Colombeau framework, extending previous work on flows of generalized vector fields and symmetry group analysis of generalized solutions. As an application, we analyze group invariant generalized functions in this setting.

Generalised Connections and Curvature

The concept of generalised (in the sense of Colombeau) connection on a principal fibre bundle is introduced. This definition is then used to extend results concerning the geometry of principal fibre bundles to those that only have a generalised connection. Some applications to singular solutions of Yang-Mills theory are given.

On Classical Solutions of the Relativistic Vlasov-Klein-Gordon System

We consider a collisionless ensemble of classical particles coupled to a Klein-Gordon field. For the resulting nonlinear system of partial differential equations, the relativistic Vlasov-Klein-Gordon system, we prove local-in-time existence of classical solutions and a continuation criterion which says that a solution can blow up only if the particle momenta become large. We also show that classical solutions are global in time in the one-dimensional case.

Non-smooth differential geometry and algebras of generalized functions

Algebras of generalized functions offer possibilities beyond the purely distributional approach in modelling singular quantities in non-smooth differential geometry. This article presents an introductory survey of recent developments in this field and highlights some applications in mathematical physics.

Generalized flows and singular ODEs on differentiable manifolds

Based on the concept of manifold valued generalized functions we initiate a study of nonlinear ordinary differential equations with singular (in particular: distributional) right hand sides in a global setting. After establishing several existence and uniqueness results for solutions of such equations and flows of singular vector fields we compare the solution concept employed here with the purely distributional setting. Finally, we derive criteria securing that a sequence of smooth flows corresponding to a regularization of a given singular vector field converges to a measurable limiting flow.

Generalized pseudo-Riemannian geometry

Generalized tensor analysis in the sense of Colombeau's construction is employed to introduce a nonlinear distributional pseudo-Riemannian geometry. In particular, after deriving several characterizations of invertibility in the algebra of generalized functions we define the notions of generalized pseudo-Riemannian metric, generalized connection and generalized curvature tensor. We prove a ``Fundamental Lemma of (pseudo-)Riemannian geometry'' in this setting and define the notion of geodesics of a generalized metric. Finally, we present applications of the resulting theory to general relativity.

Global Weak Solutions of the Relativistic Vlasov-Klein-Gordon System

We consider an ensemble of classical particles coupled to a Klein-Gordon field. For the resulting nonlinear system of partial differential equations, which we call the relativistic Vlasov-Klein-Gordon system, we prove the existence of global weak solutions for initial data satisfying a size restriction. The latter becomes necessary since the energy of the system is indefinite, and only for restricted data a-priori bounds on the solutions can be derived from conservation of energy.

Intrinsic characterization of manifold-valued generalized functions

The concept of generalized functions taking values in a differentiable manifold is extended to a functorial theory. We establish several characterization results which allow a global intrinsic formulation both of the theory of manifold-valued generalized functions and of generalized vector bundle homomorphisms. As a consequence, a characterization of equivalence that does not resort to derivatives (already known for the scalar-valued cases of Colombeau's construction) is achieved. These results are employed to derive a point value description of all types of generalized functions valued in manifolds and to show that composition can be carried out unrestrictedly. Finally, a new concept of association adapted to the present setting is introduced.

Foundations of a nonlinear distributional geometry

Co lombeau's construction of generalized functions (in its special variant) is extended to a theory of generalized sections of vector bundles. As particular cases, generalized tensor analysis and exterior algebra are studied. A point value characterization for generalized functions on manifolds is derived, several algebraic characterizations of spaces of generalized sections are established and consistency properties with respect to linear distributional geometry are derived. An application to nonsmooth mechanics indicates the additional flexibility offered by this approach compared to the purely distributional picture.

Generalized functions valued in a smooth manifold

Based on Colombeau's theory of algebras of generalized functions we introduce the concepts of generalized functions taking values in differentiable manifolds as well as of generalized vector bundle homomorphisms. We study their basic properties, in particular with respect to some new point value concepts for generalized functions and indicate applications of the resulting theory in general relativity.

Diffeomorphism invariant Colombeau algebras. Part III: Global theory

We present the construction of an associative, commutative algebra $\hat {\mathcal G}$ of generalized functions on a manifold $X$ satisfying the following optimal set of permanence properties: (i)The space of distributions on $X$ is linearly embedded into $\hat {\mathcal G}$, $f(p)\equiv 1$ is the unity in the algebra. (ii) For every smooth vector field $ξ$ on $X$ there exists a derivation operator $\hat L_ξ: \hat {\mathcal G} \to \hat {\mathcal G}$ which is linear and satisfies the Leibniz rule. (iii) $L_ξ$ restricted to the space of distributions on $X$ is the usual Lie derivative. (iv) Multiplication in the algebra restricted to the space of smooth functions is the usual (pointwise) product of functions. Moreover, the basic building blocks of $\hat {\mathcal G}$ are defined in purely intrinsic terms of the manifold $X$.

Microlocal properties of basic operations in Colombeau algebras

The Colombeau algebra of generalized functions allows to unrestrictedly carry out products of distributions. We analyze this operation from a microlocal point of view, deriving a general inclusion relation for wave front sets of products in the algebra. Furthermore, we give explicit examples showing that the given result is optimal, i.e. its assumptions cannot be weakened. Finally, we discuss the interrelation of these results with the concept of pullback under smooth maps.

Regularized derivatives in a 2-dimensional model of self-interacting fields with singular data

The coupled Maxwell-Lorentz system describes feed-back action of electromagnetic fields in classical electrodynamics. When applied to point-charge sources (viewed as limiting cases of charged fluids) the resulting nonlinear weakly hyperbolic system lies beyond the scope of classical distribution theory. Using regularized derivatives in the framework of Colombeau algebras of generalized functions we analyze a two-dimensional analogue of the Maxwell-Lorentz system. After establishing existence and uniqueness of solutions in this setting we derive some results on distributional limits of solutions with $δ$-like initial values.

On the foundations of nonlinear generalized functions I

We construct a diffeomorphism invariant (Colombeau-type) differential algebra canonically containing the space of distributions in the sense of L. Schwartz. Employing differential calculus in infinite dimensional (convenient) vector spaces, previous attempts in this direction are unified and completed. Several classification results are achieved and applications to nonlinear differential equations involving singularities are given.

A global theory of algebras of generalized functions

We present a geometric approach to defining an algebra $\hat{\mathcal G}(M)$ (the Colombeau algebra) of generalized functions on a smooth manifold $M$ containing the space ${\mathcal D}'(M)$ of distributions on $M$. Based on differential calculus in convenient vector spaces we achieve an intrinsic construction of $\hat{\mathcal G}(M)$. $\hat{\mathcal G}(M)$ is a{\em differential} algebra, its elements possessing Lie derivatives with respect to arbitrary smooth vector fields. Moreover, we construct a canonical linear embedding of ${\mathcal D}'(M)$ into $\hat{\mathcal G}(M)$ that renders ${\mathcal C}^\infty (M)$ a faithful subalgebra of $\hat{\mathcal G}(M)$. Finally, it is shown that this embedding commutes with Lie derivatives. Thus $\hat{\mathcal G}(M)$ retains all the distinguishing properties of the local theory in a global context.

Group analysis of differential equations and generalized functions

We present an extension of the methods of classical Lie group analysis of differential equations to equations involving generalized functions (in particular: distributions). A suitable framework for such a generalization is provided by Colombeau's theory of algebras of generalized functions. We show that under some mild conditions on the differential equations, symmetries of classical solutions remain symmetries for generalized solutions. Moreover, we introduce a generalization of the infinitesimal methods of group analysis that allows to compute symmetries of linear and nonlinear differential equations containing generalized function terms. Thereby, the group generators and group actions may be given by generalized functions themselves.

A rigorous solution concept for geodesic and geodesic deviation equations in impulsive gravitational waves

The geodesic as well as the geodesic deviation equation for impulsive gravitational waves involve highly singular products of distributions $(θ\de$, $θ^2\de$, $\de^2$). A solution concept for these equations based on embedding the distributional metric into the Colombeau algebra of generalized functions is presented. Using a universal regularization procedure we prove existence and uniqueness results and calculate the distributional limits of these solutions explicitly. The obtained limits are regularization independent and display the physically expected behavior.
