A Kac system interacting with two heat reservoirs

We study a system formed by $M$ particles moving in 3 dimension and interacting with 2 heat reservoirs with $N>>M$ particles each. The system and the reservoirs evolve and interact via random collision described by a Kac-type master equation. The initial state of the reservoirs is given by 2 Maxwellian distributions at temperature $T_+$ and $T_-$. We show that, for times much shorter than $\sqrt{N}$ the interaction with the reservoirs is well approximated by the interaction with 2 Maxwellian thermostats, that is, heat reservoirs with $N=\infty$. As a byproduct, if $T_+=T_-$ we extend the results in \cite{BLTV} to particles in 3 dimension.

The CKN inequality for spinors: symmetry and symmetry breaking

This paper is devoted to Sobolev interpolation inequalities for spinors, with weights of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg (CKN) type. In view of the corresponding results for scalar functions, a natural question is to determine whether optimal spinors have symmetry properties, or whether spinors with symmetry properties are linearly unstable, in which case we shall say that symmetry breaking occurs. What symmetry means has to be carefully defined and the overall picture turns out to be richer than in the scalar case. So far, no symmetrization technique is available in the spinorial case. We can however determine a range of the parameters for which symmetry holds using a detailed analysis based mostly on spectral methods.

A short review on Improvements and stability for some interpolation inequalities

In this paper, we present recent stability results with explicit and dimensionally sharp constants and optimal norms for the Sobolev inequality and for the Gaussian logarithmic Sobolev inequality obtained by the authors in [24]. The stability for the Gaussian logarithmic Sobolev inequality was obtained as a byproduct of the stability for the Sobolev inequality. Here we give a new, direct, alternative proof. We also discuss improved versions of interpolation inequalities based on the carr\'e du champ method.

Sharp stability for Sobolev and log-Sobolev inequalities, with optimal dimensional dependence

We prove a sharp quantitative version for the stability of the Sobolev inequality with explicit constants. Moreover, the constants have the correct behavior in the limit of large dimensions, which allows us to deduce an optimal quantitative stability estimate for the Gaussian log-Sobolev inequality with an explicit dimension-free constant. Our proofs rely on several ingredients such as competing symmetries, a flow based on continuous Steiner symmetrization that interpolates continuously between a function and its symmetric decreasing rearrangement, and refined estimates on the Sobolev functional in the neighborhood of the optimal Aubin--Talenti functions.

A sharp criterion for zero modes of the Dirac equation

It is shown that $\Vert A \Vert_{L^d}^2 \ge \frac{d}{d-2}\, S_d$ is a necessary condition for the existence of a nontrivial solution of the Dirac equation $\gamma \cdot (-i\nabla -A)\psi = 0$ in $d$ dimensions. Here, $S_d$ is the sharp Sobolev constant. If $d$ is odd and $\Vert A \Vert_{L^d}^2= \frac{d}{d-2}\, S_d$, then there exist vector potentials that allow for zero modes. A complete classification of these vector potentials and their corresponding zero modes is given.

Existence of optimizers in a Sobolev inequality for vector fields

We consider the minimization problem corresponding to a Sobolev inequality for vector fields and show that minimizing sequences are relatively compact up to the symmetries of the problem. In particular, there is a minimizer. An ingredient in our proof is a version of the Rellich--Kondrachov compactness theorem for sequences satisfying a nonlinear constraint.

A remark on a paper by Hundertmark and Simon

We prove a sharp Lieb-Thirring type inequality for Jacobi matrices, thereby settling a conjecture of Hundertmark and Simon. An interesting feature of the proof is that it employs a technique originally used by Hundertmark-Laptev-Weidl concerning sums of singular values for compact operators.

Which magnetic fields support a zero mode?

This paper presents some results concerning the size of magnetic fields that support zero modes for the three dimensional Dirac equation and related problems for spinor equations. It is a well known fact that for the Schr\"odinger in three dimensions to have a negative energy bound state, the 3/2- norm of the potential has to be greater than the Sobolev constant. We prove an analogous result for the existence of zero modes, namely that the 3/2 - norm of the magnetic field has to greater than twice the Sobolev constant. The novel point here is that the spinorial nature of the wave function is crucial. It leads to an improved diamagnetic inequality from which the bound is derived. While the results are probably not sharp, other equations are analyzed where the results are indeed optimal.

Decay of Information for the Kac Evolution

We consider a system of $M$ particles in contact with a heat reservoir of $N\gg M$ particles. The evolution in the system and the reservoir, together with their interaction, are modeled via the Kac's Master Equation. We chose the initial distribution with total energy $N+M$ and show that if the reservoir is initially in equilibrium, that is if the initial distribution depends only on the energy of the particle in the reservoir, then the entropy of the system decay exponentially to a very small value. We base our proof on a similar property for the Information. A similar argument allows us to greatly simplify the proof of the main result in [2].

Critical magnetic field for 2d magnetic Dirac-Coulomb operators and Hardy inequalities

This paper is devoted to the study of the two-dimensional Dirac-Coulomb operator in presence of an Aharonov-Bohm external magnetic potential. We characterize the highest intensity of the magnetic field for which a two-dimensional magnetic Hardy inequality holds. Up to this critical magnetic field, the operator admits a distinguished self-adjoint extension and there is a notion of ground state energy, defined as the lowest eigenvalue in the gap of the continuous spectrum.

Inequalities involving Aharonov-Bohm magnetic potentials in dimensions 2 and 3

This paper is devoted to a collection of results on nonlinear interpolation inequalities associated with Schr{\"o}dinger operators involving Aharonov-Bohm magnetic potentials, and to some consequences. As symmetry plays an important role for establishing optimality results, we shall consider various cases corresponding to a circle, a two-dimensional sphere or a two-dimensional torus, and also the Euclidean spaces of dimensions two and three. Most of the results are new and we put the emphasis on the methods, as very little is known on symmetry, rigidity and optimality in presence of a magnetic field. The most spectacular applications are new magnetic Hardy inequalities in dimensions 2 and 3.

Symmetry results in two-dimensional inequalities for Aharonov-Bohm magnetic fields

This paper is devoted to the symmetry and symmetry breaking properties of a two-dimensional magnetic Schr{\"o}dinger operator involving an Aharonov-Bohm magnetic vector potential. We investigate the symmetry properties of the optimal potential for the corresponding magnetic Keller-Lieb-Thir-ring inequality. We prove that this potential is radially symmetric if the intensity of the magnetic field is below an explicit threshold, while symmetry is broken above a second threshold corresponding to a higher magnetic field. The method relies on the study of the magnetic kinetic energy of the wave function and amounts to study the symmetry properties of the optimal functions in a magnetic Hardy-Sobolev interpolation inequality. We give a quantified range of symmetry by a non-perturbative method. To establish the symmetry breaking range, we exploit the coupling of the phase and of the modulus and also obtain a quantitative result.

Magnetic rings

We study functional and spectral properties of perturbations of the magnetic Laplace operator on the circle. This operator appears when considering the restriction to the unit circle of a two-dimensional Schr{\"o}dinger operator with the Bohm-Aharonov vector potential. We prove a Hardy-type inequality on the two-dimensional Euclidean space and, on the circle, a sharp interpolation inequality and a sharp Keller-Lieb-Thirring inequality.

Symmetry and symmetry breaking: rigidity and flows in elliptic PDEs

The issue of symmetry and symmetry breaking is fundamental in all areas of science. Symmetry is often assimilated to order and beauty while symmetry breaking is the source of many interesting phenomena such as phase transitions, instabilities, segregation, self-organization, etc. In this contribution we review a series of sharp results of symmetry of nonnegative solutions of nonlinear elliptic differential equation associated with minimization problems on Euclidean spaces or manifolds. Nonnegative solutions of those equations are unique, a property that can also be interpreted as a rigidity result. The method relies on linear and nonlinear flows which reveal deep and robust properties of a large class of variational problems. Local results on linear instability leading to symmetry breaking and the bifurcation of non-symmetric branches of solutions are reinterpreted in a larger, global, variational picture in which our flows characterize directions of descent.

Entropy decay for the Kac evolution

We consider solutions to the Kac master equation for initial conditions where $N$ particles are in a thermal equilibrium and $M\le N$ particles are out of equilibrium. We show that such solutions have exponential decay in entropy relative to the thermal state. More precisely, the decay is exponential in time with an explicit rate that is essentially independent on the particle number. This is in marked contrast to previous results which show that the entropy production for arbitrary initial conditions is inversely proportional to the particle number. The proof relies on Nelson's hypercontractive estimate and the geometric form of the Brascamp-Lieb inequalities due to Franck Barthe. Similar results hold for the Kac-Boltzmann equation with uniform scattering cross sections.

Interpolation inequalities and spectral estimates for magnetic operators

We prove magnetic interpolation inequalities and Keller-Lieb-Thir-ring estimates for the principal eigenvalue of magnetic Schr{\"o}dinger operators. We establish explicit upper and lower bounds for the best constants and show by numerical methods that our theoretical estimates are accurate.

Interpolation inequalities, nonlinear flows, boundary terms, optimality and linearization

This paper is devoted to the computation of the asymptotic boundary terms in entropy methods applied to a fast diffusion equation with weights associated with Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg interpolation inequalities. So far, only elliptic equations have been considered and our goal is to justify, at least partially, an extension of the carr{\'e} du champ / Bakry-Emery / R{\'e}nyi entropy methods to parabolic equations. This makes sense because evolution equations are at the core of the heuristics of the method even when only elliptic equations are considered, but this also raises difficult questions on the regularity and on the growth of the solutions in presence of weights. We also investigate the relations between the optimal constant in the entropy - entropy production inequality, the optimal constant in the information - information production inequality, the asymptotic growth rate of generalized R{\'e}nyi entropy powers under the action of the evolution equation and the optimal range of parameters for symmetry breaking issues in Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities, under the assumption that the weights do not introduce singular boundary terms at x=0. These considerations are new even in the case without weights. For instance, we establish the equivalence of carr{\'e} du champ and R{\'e}nyi entropy methods and explain why entropy methods produce optimal constants in entropy - entropy production and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities in absence of weights, or optimal symmetry ranges when weights are present.
