Reggeon Field Theory and Self Duality: Making Ends Meet

Motivated by the question of unitarity of Reggeon Field Theory, we use the effective field theory philosophy to find possible Reggeon Field Theory Hamiltonians $H_{RFT}$. We require that $H_{RFT}$ is self dual, reproduce all known limits (dilute-dense and dilute-dilute) and exhibits all the symmetries of the JIMWLK Hamiltonian. We find a family of Hamiltonians which satisfy all the above requirements. One of these is identical in form to the so called "diamond action" discussed in \cite{diamond,Balitsky05}. However we show by explicit calculation that the so called "diamond condition" is not satisfied beyond leading perturbative order.

The JIMWLK evolution and the s-channel unitarity

Further developing ideas set forth in \cite{KLL}, we discuss QCD Reggeon Field Theory (RFT) and formulate restrictions imposed on its Hamiltonian by the unitarity of underlying QCD. We identify explicitly the QCD RFT Hilbert space, provide algebra of the basic degrees of freedom (Wilson lines and their duals) and the algorithm for calculating the scattering amplitudes. We formulate conditions imposed on the "Fock states" of RFT by unitary nature of QCD, and explain how these constraints appear as unitarity constraints on possible RFT hamiltonians that generate energy evolution of scattering amplitudes. We study the realization of these constraints in the dense-dilute limit of RFT where the appropriate Hamiltonian is the JIMWLK Hamiltonian $H_{JIMWLK}$. We find that the action $H_{JIMWLK}$ on the dilute projectile states is unitary, but acting on dense "target" states it violates unitarity and generates states with negative probabilities through energy evolution.

Chiral transport in strong fields from holography

Anomaly-induced transport phenomena in presence of strong external electromagnetic fields are explored within a 4D field theory defined holographically as $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in Schwarzschild-$AdS_5$. Two complementary studies are reported. In the first one, we present results on the Ohmic conductivity, diffusion constant, chiral magnetic conductivity, and additional anomaly-induced transport coefficients as functions of external e/m fields. Next, gradient resummation in a constant background magnetic field is performed. All-order resummed constitutive relations are parameterised by four momenta-dependent transport coefficient functions (TCFs). A highlight of this part is a thorough study of {\it non-dissipative} chiral magnetic waves (CMW) in strong magnetic fields.

Nonlinear chiral transport from holography

Nonlinear transport phenomena induced by the chiral anomaly are explored within a 4D field theory defined holographically as $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in Schwarzschild-$AdS_5$. First, in presence of external electromagnetic fields, a general form of vector and axial currents is derived. Then, within the gradient expansion up to third order, we analytically compute all (over 50) transport coefficients. A wealth of higher order (nonlinear) transport phenomena induced by chiral anomaly are found beyond the Chiral Magnetic and Chiral Separation Effects. Some of the higher order terms are relaxation time corrections to the lowest order nonlinear effects. The charge diffusion constant and dispersion relation of the Chiral Magnetic Wave are found to receive anomaly-induced non-linear corrections due to e/m background fields. Furthermore, there emerges a new gapless mode, which we refer to as {\it Chiral Hall Density Wave}, propagating along the background Poynting vector.

Gradient resummation for nonlinear chiral transport: an insight from holography

Nonlinear transport phenomena induced by chiral anomaly are explored within a 4D field theory defined holographically as $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in Schwarzschild-$AdS_5$. In presence of weak constant background electromagnetic fields, the constitutive relations for vector and axial currents, resummed to all orders in the gradients of charge densities, are encoded in nine momenta-dependent transport coefficient functions (TCFs). These TCFs are first calculated analytically up to third order in gradient expansion, and then evaluated numerically beyond the hydrodynamic limit. Fourier transformed, the TCFs become memory functions. The memory function of the chiral magnetic effect (CME) is found to differ dramatically from the instantaneous response form of the original CME. Beyond hydrodynamic limit and when external magnetic field is larger than some critical value, the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) is discovered to possess a discrete spectrum of non-dissipative modes.

The Color Glass Condensate density matrix: Lindblad evolution, entanglement entropy and Wigner functional

We introduce the notion of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) density matrix $\hatρ$. This generalizes the concept of probability density for the distribution of the color charges in the hadronic wave function and is consistent with understanding the CGC as an effective theory after integration of part of the hadronic degrees of freedom. We derive the evolution equations for the density matrix and show that the JIMWLK evolution equation arises here as the evolution of diagonal matrix elements of $\hatρ$ in the color charge density basis. We analyze the behavior of this density matrix under high energy evolution and show that its purity decreases with energy. We show that the evolution equation for the density matrix has the celebrated Kossakowsky-Lindblad form describing the non-unitary evolution of the density matrix of an open system. Additionally, we consider the dilute limit and demonstrate that, at large rapidity, the entanglement entropy of the density matrix grows linearly with rapidity according to $d S_e / d y = γ$, where $γ$ is the leading BFKL eigenvalue. We also discuss the evolution of $\hatρ$ in the saturated regime and relate it to the Levin-Tuchin law and find that the entropy again grows linearly with rapidity, but at a slower rate. By analyzing the dense and dilute regimes of the full density matrix we are able to establish a duality between the regimes. Finally we introduce the Wigner functional derived from this density matrix and discuss how it can be used to determine the distribution of color currents, which may be instrumental in understanding dynamical features of QCD at high energy.

Double and triple inclusive gluon production at mid rapidity: quantum interference in p-A scattering

We compute double and triple inclusive gluon production in p-A scattering beyond the so-called "glasma graph" approximation. We consider quantum interference effects and identify in this general setup the terms responsible for the gluon HBT and initial wave function Bose enhancement which lead to correlations in particle production. Both of these terms originate from the factorizable part of the quadrupole and sextupole terms in the production cross section. We also show that the target Bose enhancement in this regime is suppressed at large number of colors.

Entanglement entropy, entropy production and time evolution in high energy QCD

Working in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate effective theory of high energy QCD, we revisit the momentum space entanglement entropy of the soft gluons produced in high energy dilute-dense collisions. We extend the work of~\cite{Kovner:2015hga} by considering entropy produced in a single event. This entropy arises due to decoherence of eigenstates with different energies during the time evolution after the collisions with the target. We define it rigorously as the entanglement entropy of the produced system with the experimental apparatus. We compute the time dependent single event entropy in the limit of weak projectile field. Further we compute the entropy for the ensemble of events defined by the McLerran-Venugopalan model for the projectile wave function. Interestingly the entropy of the ensemble has a much weaker time dependence than the entropy in any single event. We attribute this feature to the so called monogamy of entanglement.

Soft photon and two hard jets forward production in proton-nucleus collisions

We calculate the cross section for production of a soft photon and two hard jets in the forward rapidity region in proton-nucleus collisions at high energies. The calculation is performed within the hybrid formalism. The hardness of the final particles is defined with respect to the saturation scale of the nucleus. We consider both the correlation limit of small momentum imbalance and the dilute target limit where the momentum imbalance is of the order of the hardness of the jets. The results depend on the first two transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon distributions of the nucleus.

Exploring correlations in the CGC wave function: odd azimuthal anisotropy

We extend the CGC approach to calculation of the double inclusive gluon production by including high-density effect in the CGC wave function of the projectile (proton). Our main result is that these effects lead to the appearance of odd harmonics in the two-particle correlation C(k,p). We find that in the high momentum limit, |k|,|p|>>Q_s, this results in a positive c_1{2}. Additionally when the magnitudes of the two momenta are approximately equal, |k|/|p| ~ 1, the density effects also generate a positive third harmonic c_3{2}, which translates into a non-vanishing v_3 when the momenta of the trigger and associated particle are in the same momentum bin. The sign of c_3{2} becomes negative when |k|/|p|>1.1 suggesting an interesting experimental signature.

Initial state qqg correlations as a background for the Chiral Magnetic Effect in collision of small systems

Motivated by understanding the background to Chiral Magnetic Effect in proton-nucleus collisions from first principles, we compute the three particle correlation in the projectile wave function. We extract the correlations between two quarks and one gluon in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate. This is related to the same-charge correlation of the conventional observable for the Chiral Magnetic Effect. We show that there are two different contributions to this correlation function. One contribution is rapidity-independent and as such can be identified with the pedestal; while the other displays rather strong rapidity dependence. The pedestal contribution and the rapidity-dependent contribution at large rapidity separation between the two quarks result in the negative same charge correlations, while at small rapidity separation the second contribution changes sign. We argue that the computed initial state correlations might be partially responsible for the experimentally observed signal in proton-nucleus collisions.

Anomalous transport from holography: Part II

This is a second study of chiral anomaly induced transport within a holographic model consisting of anomalous $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ Maxwell theory in Schwarzschild-$AdS_5$ spacetime. In the first part, chiral magnetic/separation effects (CME/CSE) are considered in presence of a static spatially-inhomogeneous external magnetic field. Gradient corrections to CME/CSE are analytically evaluated up to third order in the derivative expansion. Some of the third order gradient corrections lead to an anomaly-induced negative $B^2$-correction to the diffusion constant. We also find non-linear in $B$ modifications to the chiral magnetic wave (CMW). In the second part, we focus on the experimentally interesting case of the axial chemical potential being induced dynamically by a constant magnetic and time-dependent electric fields. Constitutive relations for the vector/axial currents are computed employing two different approximations: (a) derivative expansion (up to third order) but fully nonlinear in the external fields, and (b) weak electric field limit but resuming all orders in the derivative expansion. A non-vanishing non-linear axial current (CSE) is found in the first case. Dependence on magnetic field and frequency of linear transport coefficient functions (TCFs) is explored in the second.

High Energy QCD at NLO: from light-cone wave function to JIMWLK evolution

Soft components of the light cone wave-function of a fast moving projectile hadron is computed in perturbation theory to third order in QCD coupling constant. At this order, the Fock space of the soft modes consists of one-gluon, two-gluon, and a quark-antiquark states. The hard component of the wave-function acts as a non-Abelian background field for the soft modes and is represented by a valence charge distribution that accounts for non-linear density effects in the projectile. When scattered off a dense target, the diagonal element of the S-matrix reveals the Hamiltonian of high energy evolution, the JIMWLK Hamiltonian. This way we provide a new direct derivation of the JIMWLK Hamiltonian at the Next-to-Leading Order.

Quark correlations in the Color Glass Condensate: Pauli blocking and the ridge

We consider, for the first time, correlations between produced quarks in p-A collisions in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate. We find a quark-quark ridge that shows a dip at $Δη\sim 2$ relative to the gluon-gluon ridge. The origin of this dip is the short range (in rapidity) Pauli blocking experienced by quarks in the wave function of the incoming projectile. We observe that these correlations, present in the initial state, survive the scattering process. We suggest that this effect may be observable in open charm-open charm correlations at the Large Hadron Collider.

Anomalous transport from holography: Part I

We revisit the transport properties induced by the chiral anomaly in a charged plasma holographically dual to anomalous $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ Maxwell theory in Schwarzschild-$AdS_5$. Off-shell constitutive relations for vector and axial currents are derived using various approximations generalising most of known in the literature anomaly-induced phenomena and revealing some new ones. In a weak external field approximation, the constitutive relations have all-order derivatives resummed into six momenta-dependent transport coefficient functions: the diffusion, the electric/magnetic conductivity, and three anomaly induced functions. The latter generalise the chiral magnetic and chiral separation effects. Nonlinear transport is studied assuming presence of constant background external fields. The chiral magnetic effect, including all order nonlinearity in magnetic field, is proven to be exact when the magnetic field is the only external field that is turned on. Non-linear corrections to the constitutive relations due to electric and axial external fields are computed.

QCD unitarity constraints on Reggeon Field Theory

We point out that the $s$-channel unitarity of QCD imposes meaningful constraints on a possible form of the QCD Reggeon Field Theory. We show that neither the BFKL nor JIMWLK nor Braun's Hamiltonian satisfy the said constraints. In a toy, zero transverse dimensional case we construct a model that satisfies the analogous constraint and show that at infinite energy it indeed tends to a "black disk limit" as opposed to the model with triple Pomeron vertex only, routinely used as a toy model in the literature.

$U(1)$ current from the AdS/CFT: diffusion, conductivity and causality

For a holographically defined finite temperature theory, we derive an off-shell constitutive relation for a global $U(1)$ current driven by a weak external non-dynamical electromagnetic field. The constitutive relation involves an all order gradient expansion resummed into three momenta-dependent transport coefficient functions: diffusion, electric conductivity, and "magnetic" conductivity. These transport functions are first computed analytically in the hydrodynamic limit, up to third order in the derivative expansion, and then numerically for generic values of momenta. We also compute a diffusion memory function, which, as a result of all order gradient resummation, is found to be causal.

Heavy quarks in proton-nucleus collisions - the hybrid formalism

We explore the quark mass effects on inclusive hadron production in proton-nucleus collisions at high energies. We consider two processes. First, we compute the single inclusive cross-section for production of hadrons with open heavy flavour in the proton forward direction at leading order. Next, in the same kinematics, we calculate the heavy-quark contribution to single inclusive production of light or unidentified hadrons at next-to-leading-order. For both studies we exploit the hybrid formalism, that is the collinear factorisation on the proton side while high-density and high-energy effects are resummed on the side of the nucleus.
