On the structure of modular principal series representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2$ over some finite rings

The submodule structure of mod $p$ principal series representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(k)$, for $k$ a finite field of characteristic $p$, was described by Bardoe and Sin and has played an important role in subsequent work on the mod $p$ local Langlands correspondence. The present paper studies the structure of mod $p$ principal series representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathcal{O} / \mathfrak{m}^n)$, where $\mathcal{O}$ is the ring of integers of a $p$-adic field $F$ and $\mathfrak{m}$ its maximal ideal. In particular, the multiset of Jordan-Hölder constituents is determined. In the case $n = 2$, more precise results are obtained. If $F / \mathbb{Q}_p$ is totally ramified, the submodule structure of the principal series is determined completely. Otherwise the submodule structure is infinite. When $F$ is ramified but not totally ramified, the socle and radical filtrations are determined and a specific family of submodules, providing a filtration of the principal series with irreducible quotients, is studied; this family is closely related to the image of a functor of Breuil. In the case of unramified $F$, the structure of a particular submodule of the principal series is studied; this provides a more precise description of the structure of a module constructed by Breuil and Pauskūnas in the context of their work on diagrams giving rise to supersingular mod $p$ representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(F)$.

Pro-isomorphic zeta functions of some $D^\ast$ Lie lattices of even rank

We compute the local pro-isomorphic zeta functions at all but finitely many primes for a certain family of class-two-nilpotent Lie lattices of even rank, parametrized by irreducible non-linear polynomials $f(x) \in \mathbb{Z} [x]$, that corresponds to a family of groups introduced by Grunewald and Segal. The result is expressed in terms of a combinatorially defined family of rational functions satisfying a functional equation upon inversion of the variables.

Generalized Igusa functions and ideal growth in nilpotent Lie rings

We introduce a new class of combinatorially defined rational functions and apply them to deduce explicit formulae for local ideal zeta functions associated to the members of a large class of nilpotent Lie rings which contains the free class-2-nilpotent Lie rings and is stable under direct products. Our results unify and generalize a substantial number of previous computations. We show that the new rational functions, and thus also the local zeta functions under consideration, enjoy a self-reciprocity property, expressed in terms of a functional equation upon inversion of variables. We establish a conjecture of Grunewald, Segal, and Smith on the uniformity of normal zeta functions of finitely generated free class-2-nilpotent groups.

A family of irreducible supersingular representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(F)$ for some ramified $p$-adic fields

We construct infinite families of irreducible supersingular mod $p$ representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(F)$ with $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathcal{O}_F)$-socle compatible with Serre's modularity conjecture, where $F / \mathbb{Q}_p$ is any finite extension with residue field $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ and ramification degree $e \leq (p-1)/2$. These are the first such examples for ramified $F / \mathbb{Q}_p$.

Ideal growth in amalgamated powers of nilpotent rings of class two and zeta functions of quiver representations

Let $L$ be a nilpotent algebra of class two over a compact discrete valuation ring $A$ of characteristic zero or of sufficiently large positive characteristic. Let $q$ be the residue cardinality of $A$. The ideal zeta function of $L$ is a Dirichlet series enumerating finite-index ideals of $L$. We prove that there is a rational function in $q$, $q^m$, $q^{-s}$, and $q^{-ms}$ giving the ideal zeta function of the amalgamation of $m$ copies of $L$ over the derived subring, for every $m \geq 1$, up to an explicit factor. More generally, we prove this for the zeta functions of nilpotent quiver representations of class two defined by Lee and Voll, and in particular for Dirichlet series counting graded submodules of a graded $A$-module. If the algebra $L$, or the quiver representation, is defined over $\mathbb{Z}$, then we obtain a uniform rationality result.

Pro-isomorphic zeta functions of nilpotent groups and Lie rings under base extension

We consider pro-isomorphic zeta functions of the groups $Γ(\mathcal{O}_K)$, where $Γ$ is a unipotent group scheme defined over $\mathbb{Z}$ and $K$ varies over all number fields. Under certain conditions, we show that these functions have a fine Euler decomposition with factors indexed by primes $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ and depending only on the structure of $Γ$, the degree $[K : \mathbb{Q}]$, and the cardinality of the residue field $\mathcal{O}_K / \mathfrak{p}$. We show that the factors satisfy a certain uniform rationality and study their dependence on $[K : \mathbb{Q}]$. Explicit computations are given for several families of unipotent groups. These include an apparently novel identity involving permutation statistics on the hyperoctahedral group.

Systolic length of triangular modular curves

We present a method for computing upper bounds on the systolic length of certain Riemann surfaces uniformized by congruence subgroups of hyperbolic triangle groups, admitting congruence Hurwitz curves as a special case. The uniformizing group is realized as a Fuchsian group and a convenient finite generating set is computed. The upper bound is derived from the traces of the generators. Some explicit computations, including ones for non-arithmetic surfaces, are given. We apply a result of Cosac and Dória to show that the systolic length grows logarithmically with respect to the genus.

On the flat cohomology of binary norm forms

Let $\mathcal{O}$ be an order of index $m$ in the maximal order of a quadratic number field $k=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$. Let $\underline{\mathbf{O}}_{d,m}$ be the orthogonal $\mathbb{Z}$-group of the associated norm form $q_{d,m}$. We describe the structure of the pointed set $H^1_{\mathrm{fl}}(\mathbb{Z},\underline{\mathbf{O}}_{d,m})$, which classifies quadratic forms isomorphic (properly or improperly) to $q_{d,m}$ in the flat topology. Gauss classified quadratic forms of fundamental discriminant and showed that the composition of any binary $\mathbb{Z}$-form of discriminant $Δ_k$ with itself belongs to the principal genus. Using cohomological language, we extend these results to forms of certain non-fundamental discriminants.

Normal zeta functions of the Heisenberg groups over number rings II -- the non-split case

We compute explicitly the normal zeta functions of the Heisenberg groups $H(R)$, where $R$ is a compact discrete valuation ring of characteristic zero. These zeta functions occur as Euler factors of normal zeta functions of Heisenberg groups of the form $H(\mathcal{O}_K)$, where $\mathcal{O}_K$ is the ring of integers of an arbitrary number field~$K$, at the rational primes which are non-split in~$K$. We show that these local zeta functions satisfy functional equations upon the inversion of the prime.

Serre's Modularity Conjecture

These are the lecture notes from a five-hour mini-course given at the Winter School on Galois Theory held at the University of Luxembourg in February 2012. Their aim is to give an overview of Serre's modularity conjecture and of its proof by Khare, Wintenberger, and Kisin, as well as of the results of other mathematicians that played an important role in the proof. Along the way we remark on some recent (as of 2012) work concerning generalizations of the conjecture.

Weights in Serre's conjecture for Hilbert modular forms: the ramified case

Let F be a totally real field and p an odd prime. If r is a continuous, semisimple, totally odd mod p representation of the absolute Galois group of F which is tamely ramified at all places of F dividing p, then we formulate a conjecture specifying the weights for which r is modular. This extends the conjecture of Diamond, Buzzard, and Jarvis, which supposed that p was unramified in F. We also prove a theorem towards the conjecture and provide some computational evidence.
