Plaquette Ordering in SU(4) Antiferromagnets

We use fermion mean field theory to study possible plaquette ordering in the antiferromagnetic SU(4) Heisenberg model. We find the ground state for both the square and triangular lattices to be the disconnected plaquette state. Our mean field theory gives a first order transition for plaquette ordering for the triangular lattice. Our results suggest a large number of low lying states.

Theory for Phase Transitions in Insulating Vanadium Oxide

We show that the recently proposed S=2 bond model with orbital degrees of freedom for insulating V$_{2}$O$_{3}$ not only explains the anomalous magnetic ordering, but also other mysteries of the magnetic phase transition. The model contains an additional orbital degree of freedom that exhibits a zero temperature quantum phase transtion in the Ising universality class.

SU(4) Theory for Spin Systems with Orbital Degeneracy

The isotropic limit of spin systems with orbital degeneracy is shown to have global SU(4) symmetry. On many 2D lattices, the ground state does not posses long range order, which may explain the observed spin liquid properties of $LiNiO_2$. In the SU(4) Neel ordered state, spin-spin correlations can be antiferromagneitc between two neighboring sites with parallel magnetic moments.

Quasi 1 and 2d Dilute Bose Gas in Magnetic Traps : Existence of Off-Diagonal Order and Anomalous Quantum Fluctuations

Current magnetic traps can be made so anisotropic that the atomic gas trapped inside behaves like quasi one or two dimensional system. Unlike the homogeneous case, quantum phase fluctuations do not destroy macroscopic off-diagonal order of trapped Bose gases in $d\leq 2$. In the dilute limit, quantum fluctuations increase, remain constant, and decrease with size for $% 3, 2, 1d$ respectively. These behaviors are due to the combination of a finite gap and the universal spectrum of the collective mode.

Phase Transitions of the Bilayered Spin-S Heisenberg Model and Its Extension to Fractional Dimensions

We study the ground state and the phase transitions of the bilayered spin-$S$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model using the Schwinger boson mean field theory. The interplane coupling initially stabilizes but eventually destroys the long-range antiferromagnetic order. The transition to the disordered state is continuous for small $S$, and first order for large $S$. The latter is consistent with an argument based on the spin wave theory. The phase diagram and phase transitions in corresponding model in fractional dimensions are also discussed.

Ground State and Excitations of Disordered Boson Systems

After an introduction to the dirty bosons problem, we present a gaussian theory for the ground state and excitations. This approach is physically equivalent to the Bogoliubov approximation. We find that ODLRO can be destroyed with sufficient disorder. The density of states and localization of the elementary excitations are discussed.
