Hadron Formation and the Phase Diagram of QCD Matter

We investigate hadronic species freeze-out systematics in A+A collisions at low SPS energies, corresponding to a baryochemical potential above 300 MeV, analyzing NA49 hadron production data in the framework of the statistical hadronization model, and in the UrQMD hadronic transport model. Observing no deviation from universal grand canonical hadro-chemical equilibrium freeze-out, we argue that the observed hadronic freeze-out points should universally signal the boundary line of the hadronic phase in the QCD matter phase diagram.

Elliptic flow at varying energy heavy ion collisions: Partonic vs hadronic dynamics

We examine whether the breakdown in elliptic flow quark number scaling observed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energy scan is related to the turning off of deconfinement by testing the hypothesis that hydrodynamics and parton coalescence always apply, but are obscured, at lower energies, by variations in the widths of quark and anti-quark rapidity distribution. We find that this effect is enough to spoil quark number scaling in elliptic flow. A lack of scaling in data therefore does not signal the absence of partonic degrees of freedom and hadronization by coalescence. In a coalescing partonic fluid, however, elliptic flow of anti-baryons should be the greater than that of baryons, since antibaryons contain a greater admixture of partons from the highly flowing midrapidity region. Intriguingly, purely hadronic dynamics has a similar dependence of baryon-anti-baryons $v_2$ as purely partonic dynamics, again because antibaryons tend to come from regions where the deviation of the system from hydrodynamic behavior is at its smallest. The opposite trend observed in experiment is therefore an indication that we might be misunderstanding the origin of $v_2$. We finish by discussing possible explanations of this, and suggest experimental measurements capable of clarifying the situation.

Net-baryon-, net-proton-, and net-charge kurtosis in heavy-ion collisions within a relativistic transport approach

We explore the potential of net-baryon, net-proton and net-charge kurtosis measurements to investigate the properties of hot and dense matter created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Contrary to calculations in a grand canonical ensemble we explicitly take into account exact electric and baryon charge conservation on an event-by-event basis. This drastically limits the width of baryon fluctuations. A simple model to account for this is to assume a grand-canonical distribution with a sharp cut-off at the tails. We present baseline predictions of the energy dependence of the net-baryon, net-proton and net-charge kurtosis for central ($b\leq 2.75$ fm) Pb+Pb/Au+Au collisions from $E_{lab}=2A$ GeV to $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV from the UrQMD model. While the net-charge kurtosis is compatible with values around zero, the net-baryon number decreases to large negative values with decreasing beam energy. The net-proton kurtosis becomes only slightly negative for low $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$.

Hadronization and Hadronic Freeze-Out in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

We analyze hadrochemical freeze-out in central Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS energies, employing the hybrid version of the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics model, which describes the transition from a hydrodynamic stage to hadrons by the Cooper-Frye mechanism, and matches to a final hadron-resonance cascade. We fit the results both before and after the cascade stage using the Statistical Model, to assess the effect of the cascade phase. We observe a strong effect on antibaryon yields except anti-Omega, resulting in a shift in T and mu_B of the freeze-out curve. We discuss indications of a similar effect in SPS and RHIC data, and propose a method to recover the bulk hadron freeze-out conditions.

Correspondence between HBT radii and the emission zone in non-central heavy ion collisions

In non-central collisions between ultra-relativistic heavy ions, the freeze-out distribution is anisotropic, and its major longitudinal axis may be tilted away from the beam direction. The shape and orientation of this distribution are particularly interesting, as they provide a snapshot of the evolving source and reflect the space-time aspect of anisotropic flow. Experimentally, this information is extracted by measuring pion HBT radii as a function of angle with respect to the reaction plane. Existing formulae relating the oscillations of the radii and the freezeout anisotropy are in principle only valid for Gaussian sources with no collective flow. With a realistic transport model of the collision, which generates flow and non-Gaussian sources, we find that these formulae approximately reflect the anisotropy of the freezeout distribution.

Recent results on strangeness production from NA49

We present a summary of measurements of strange particles performed by the experiment NA49 in inelastic p+p interactions, as well as semi-central C+C and Si+Si, central Pb+Pb, and minimum bias Pb+Pb collisions in the energy range $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 6.3 - 17.3 GeV. New results on $π^{-}$, $K^{+}$ and $K^{-}$ production in minimum bias Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8.7 and 17.3 are shown. Furthermore the strangeness enhancement factor at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 17.3 GeV is presented and compared to the results from NA57 and STAR. Energy dependence of strange particle yields normalized to pion yields is presented. New data on $ $ production are shown at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 17.3 GeV. Furthermore we present the energy dependence of $K/π$ and $K/p$ fluctuations. The data are compared with model predictions.

Strangeness production in hadronic models and recombination models

We present recent results on the production, spectra and elliptic flow of strange particles in dynamic simulations employing hadronic degrees of freedom and from recombination models. The main focus will be on the Ultra-relativistic Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) Boltzmann approach to relativistic heavy ion collisions and a hybrid approach with intermediate hydrodynamic evolution based on UrQMD (available for download as UrQMD v3.3). Compared to the standard binary collision approach, an enhancement of the strange particle particle yields is found in the hybrid approach due to the assumption of local equilibration. The production origins of the Phi-meson in the hybrid approach are studied in further detail. We also present results on the transverse momentum spectra of baryon to meson ratios of strange particles. Due to the approximate energy independent scaling of this ratio as a function of p_T we argue, that a maximum in these spectra may not be a unique sign for quark coalescence but can be understood in terms of flow and fragmentation.

Centrality and system size dependence of (multi-strange) hyperons at 40$A$ and 158$A$ GeV: A comparison between a binary collision and a Boltzmann + hydrodynamic hybrid model

We present results on the centrality and system size dependence of (multi-strange)hyperons in Pb+Pb collisions at 40$A$ and 158$A$ GeV from the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD-v2.3) model and a coupled Boltzmann+hydrodynamics calculation. The second approach is realized in a hybrid fashion based on UrQMD with an intermediate hydrodynamical evolution for the hot and dense stage of the collision. This implementation allows a comparison of microscopic transport calculations with hydrodynamic simulations to explore the transition from a system that is not fully equilibrated such as C+C or Si+Si collisions, to a supposedly fully equilibrated system, such as that created in Pb+Pb reactions. The results of our calculation are compared to measurements of the (anti-)hyperon yields at midrapidity ($\mid$y$\mid$ $\leq$ 0.5) and total multiplicities performed by the NA49 and NA57 Collaborations at 40$A$ and 158$A$ GeV. Furthermore, we compared our predictions to the centrality dependence of $Λ$, $\barΛ$ and $Ξ^{-}$ rapidity spectra and total multiplicities at 40$A$ and 158$A$ GeV, where possible.

Strangeness fluctuations and MEMO production at FAIR

We apply a coupled transport-hydrodynamics model to discuss the production of multi-strange meta-stable objects in Pb+Pb reactions at the FAIR facility. In addition to making predictions for yields of these particles we are able to calculate particle dependent rapidity and momentum distributions. We argue that the FAIR energy regime is the optimal place to search for multi-strange baryonic object (due to the high baryon density, favouring a distillation of strangeness). Additionally, we show results for strangeness and baryon density fluctuations. Using the UrQMD model we calculate the strangeness seperation in phase space which might lead to an enhanced production of MEMOs compared to models that assume global thermalization.

Charged particle (pseudo-)rapidity distributions in proton+anti-proton/proton+proton and Pb+Pb/Au+Au collisions from SPS to LHC energies from UrQMD

We present results for final state charged particle (pseudo-)rapidity distributions in $\rm{p}$ + $\bar{\rm{p}}$ / $\rm{p}$ + $\rm{p}$ and Pb+Pb/Au+Au at ultra high energies (17.3 GeV $\leq$ $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ $\leq$ 14 TeV) from the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD-v2.3) model. In addition, excitation functions of produced charged particle multiplicities ($N_{\rm{ch}}$) and pseudorapidity spectra are investigated up to LHC energies. Good agreement is observed between UrQMD and measured pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles up to the highest Tevatron and Sp$\bar{\rm{p}}$S energies.

New results on Xi production in central Pb+Pb collisions and on Lambda, Xi production in minimum bias collisions are shown. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions of strange particles at different energies are compared. The energy dependence of the particle yields and ratios is discussed. Multistrange Hyperon Production in Pb+Pb collisions at 30, 40, 80 and 158 A$\cdot$GeV

A non-monotonic energy dependence of the $K^{+} / π^{+}$ ratio with a sharp maximum close to 30 A$\cdot$GeV is observed in central Pb+Pb collisions. Within a statistical model of the early stage, this is interpreted as a sign of the phase transition to a QGP, which causes a sharp change in the energy dependence of the strangeness to entropy ratio. This observation naturally motivates us to study the production of multistrange hyperons ($Ξ$, $Ω$) as a function of the beam energy. Furthermore it was suggested that the kinematic freeze-out of $Ω$ takes place directly at QGP hadronization. If this is indeed the case, the transverse momentum spectra of the $Ω$ directly reflect the transverse expansion velocity of a hadronizing QGP. In this report we show preliminary NA49 results on $Ω^{-}$ and $\barΩ^{+}$ production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40 and 158 A$\cdot$GeV and compare them to measurements of $Ξ^{-}$ and $\barΞ^{+}$ production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 30, 40, 80 and 158 A$\cdot$GeV.

Omega and AntiOmega production in Pb+Pb and p+p collisions at 30, 40 and 158 AGeV

We report preliminary results on Omega and AntiOmega production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 30, 40 and 158 AGeV and p + p interactions at 158 GeV. The midrapidity AntiOmega/Omega ratio is estimated to be 0.45 +- 0.05 and 0.41 +- 0.18 for central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 and 40 AGeV, respectively. The corresponding value for 158 GeV p+p interactions is 0.67 +- 0.62. For central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 AGeV fully corrected distributions are obtained. The inverse slope parameters of the transverse mass spectrum and total yields are T(Omega) = 276 +- 23 MeV, = 0.47 +- 0.07 and T(AntiOmega) = 285 +- 39 MeV, = 0.15 +- 0.02.
