From Anderson Localization to Mesoscopic Physics

In the late seventies an increasing interest in the scaling theory of Anderson localization led to new efforts to understand the conductance of systems which scatter electrons elastically. The conductance and its relation to the scattering matrix emerged as an important subject. This, coupled with the desire to find explicit manifestations of single electron interference led to the emergence of mesoscopic physics. We review electron transport phenomena which can be expressed elegantly in terms of the scattering matrix. Of particular interest are phenomena which depend not only on transmission probabilities but on both amplitude and phase of scattering matrix elements.

Persistent currents in ballistic normal-metal rings

Recent experiments renewed interest in persistent currents in mesoscopic normal-metal rings. We show that in ballistic rings in high magnetic fields the Zeeman splitting leads to periodic current quenching with period much larger than the period of the persistent current. Simple arguments show that this effect might be relevant for diffusive rings as well. Another aim of this paper is to discuss fluctuations of the persistent current due to thermal excitation of high energy levels. Being observed such fluctuations would witness a coherent state of an electron system at high temperatures when the persistent current is exponentially suppressed.

Two-particle non-local Aharonov-Bohm effect from two single-particle emitters

We propose a mesoscopic circuit in the quantum Hall effect regime comprising two uncorrelated single-particle sources and two distant Mach-Zehnder interferometers with magnetic fluxes, which allows in a controllable way to produce orbitally entangled electrons. Two-particle correlations appear as a consequence of erasing of which path information due to collisions taking place at distant interferometers and in general at different times. The two-particle correlations manifest themselves as an Aharonov-Bohm effect in noise while the current is insensitive to magnetic fluxes. In an appropriate time-interval the concurrence reaches a maximum and a Bell inequality is violated.

Electron counting with a two-particle emitter

We consider two driven cavities (capacitors) connected in series via an edge state. The cavities are driven such that they emit an electron and a hole in each cycle. Depending on the phase lag the second cavity can effectively absorb the carriers emitted by the first cavity and nullify the total current or the set-up can be made to work as a two-particle emitter. We examine the precision with which the current can be nullified and with which the second cavity effectively counts the particles emitted by the first one. To achieve single-particle detection we examine pulsed cavities.

Heat production and energy balance in nanoengines driven by time-dependent fields

We present a formalism to study the heat transport and the power developed by the local driving fields on a quantum system coupled to macroscopic reservoirs. We show that, quite generally, two important mechanisms can take place: (i) directed heat transport between reservoirs induced by the ac potentials and (ii) at slow driving, two oscillating out of phase forces perform work against each other, while the energy dissipated into the reservoirs is negligible

Dictionary between scattering matrix and Keldysh formalisms for quantum transport driven by time-periodic fields

We present the relation between the Floquet scattering matrix and the non-equilibrium Green's function formalisms to transport theory in noninteracting electronic systems in contact to reservoirs and driven by time-periodic fields. We present a translation formula that expresses the Floquet scattering matrix in terms of a Fourier transform of the retarded Green's function. We prove that such representation satisfies the fundamental identities of tran sport theory. We also present the ``adiabatic'' approximation to the dc-current in the language of the Keldysh formalism.
