Overcomplete Reproducing Pairs

The Gaussian Gabor system at the critical density has the property that it is overcomplete in $L^2(\mathbf{R})$ by exactly one element, and if any single element is removed then the resulting system is complete but is not a Schauder basis. This paper characterizes systems that are overcomplete by finitely many elements. Among other results, it is shown that if such a system has a reproducing partner, then it contains a Schauder basis. While a Schauder basis provides a strong reproducing property for elements of a space, the existence of a reproducing partner only requires a weak type of representation of elements. Thus for these systems weak representations imply strong representations. The results are applied to systems of weighted exponentials and to Gabor systems at the critical density. In particular, it is shown that the Gaussian Gabor system does not possess a reproducing partner.

Balian-Low Theorems in Several Variables

Recently, Nitzan and Olsen showed that Balian-Low theorems (BLTs) hold for discrete Gabor systems defined on $\mathbb{Z}_d$. Here we extend these results to a multivariable setting. Additionally, we show a variety of applications of the Quantitative BLT, proving in particular nonsymmetric BLTs in both the discrete and continuous setting for functions with more than one argument. Finally, in direct analogy of the continuous setting, we show the Quantitative Finite BLT implies the Finite BLT.

Uncertainty Principles for Fourier Multipliers

The admittable Sobolev regularity is quantified for a function, $w$, which has a zero in the $d$--dimensional torus and whose reciprocal $u=1/w$ is a $(p,q)$--multiplier. Several aspects of this problem are addressed, including zero--sets of positive Hausdorff dimension, matrix valued Fourier multipliers, and non--symmetric versions of Sobolev regularity. Additionally, we make a connection between Fourier multipliers and approximation properties of Gabor systems and shift--invariant systems. We exploit this connection and the results on Fourier multipliers to refine and extend versions of the Balian--Low uncertainty principle in these settings.

Asymptotics of Carleman polynomials for level curves of the inverse of a shifted Zhukovsky transformation

This paper complements the recent investigation of \cite{DM} on the asymptotic behavior of polynomials orthogonal over the interior of an analytic Jordan curve $L$. We study the specific case of $L=\{z= w-1 +(w-1)^{-1},\ |w|=R\}$, for some $R>2$, providing an example that exhibits the new features discovered in \cite{DM}, and for which the asymptotic behavior of the orthogonal polynomials is established over the entire domain of orthogonality. Surprisingly, this variation of the classical example of the ellipse turns out to be quite sophisticated. After properly normalizing the corresponding orthonormal polynomials $p_n$, $n=0,1,...$, and on certain critical subregion of the orthogonality domain, a subsequence $\{p_{n_k}\}$ converges if and only if $\log_{μ^4}(n_k)$ converges modulo 1 ($μ$ being an important quantity associated to $L$). As a consequence, the limiting points of the sequence $\{p_n\}$ form a one parameter family of functions, the parameter's range being the interval $[0,1)$. The polynomials $p_n$ are much influenced by a certain integrand function, the explained behavior being the result of this integrand having a nonisolated singularity that is a cluster point of poles. The nature of this singularity sparks purely from geometric considerations, as opposed to the more common situation where the critical singularities come from the orthogonality weight.
