Free Bosonic Vertex Operator Algebras on Genus Two Riemann Surfaces II

We continue our program to define and study $n$-point correlation functions for a vertex operator algebra $V$ on a higher genus compact Riemann surface obtained by sewing surfaces of lower genus. Here we consider Riemann surfaces of genus 2 obtained by attaching a handle to a torus. We obtain closed formulas for the genus two partition function for free bosonic theories and lattice vertex operator algebras $V_L$. We prove that the partition function is holomorphic in the sewing parameters on a given suitable domain and describe its modular properties. We also compute the genus two Heisenberg vector $n$-point function and show that the Virasoro vector one point function satisfies a genus two Ward identity. We compare our results with those obtained in the companion paper, when a pair of tori are sewn together, and show that the partition functions are not compatible in the neighborhood of a two-tori degeneration point. The \emph{normalized} partition functions of a lattice theory $V_L$ \emph{are} compatible, each being identified with the genus two theta function of $L$.

Genus Two Partition and Correlation Functions for Fermionic Vertex Operator Superalgebras I

We define the partition and $n$-point correlation functions for a vertex operator superalgebra on a genus two Riemann surface formed by sewing two tori together. For the free fermion vertex operator superalgebra we obtain a closed formula for the genus two continuous orbifold partition function in terms of an infinite dimensional determinant with entries arising from torus Szegö kernels. We prove that the partition function is holomorphic in the sewing parameters on a given suitable domain and describe its modular properties. Using the bosonized formalism, a new genus two Jacobi product identity is described for the Riemann theta series. We compute and discuss the modular properties of the generating function for all $n$-point functions in terms of a genus two Szegö kernel determinant. We also show that the Virasoro vector one point function satisfies a genus two Ward identity.

The Szegö Kernel on a Sewn Riemann Surface

We describe the Szegö kernel on a higher genus Riemann surface in terms of Szegö kernel data coming from lower genus surfaces via two explicit sewing procedures where either two Riemann surfaces are sewn together or a handle is sewn to a Riemann surface. We consider in detail the examples of the Szegö kernel on a genus two Riemann surface formed by either sewing together two punctured tori or by sewing a twice-punctured torus to itself. We also consider the modular properties of the Szegö kernel in these cases.

Free Bosonic Vertex Operator Algebras on Genus Two Riemann Surfaces I

We define the partition and $n$-point functions for a vertex operator algebra on a genus two Riemann surface formed by sewing two tori together. We obtain closed formulas for the genus two partition function for the Heisenberg free bosonic string and for any pair of simple Heisenberg modules. We prove that the partition function is holomorphic in the sewing parameters on a given suitable domain and describe its modular properties for the Heisenberg and lattice vertex operator algebras and a continuous orbifolding of the rank two fermion vertex operator super algebra. We compute the genus two Heisenberg vector $n$-point function and show that the Virasoro vector one point function satisfies a genus two Ward identity for these theories.

Vertex Operators and Modular Forms

The leitmotif of these Notes is the idea of a vertex operator algebra (VOA) and the relationship between VOAs and elliptic functions and modular forms. This is to some extent analogous to the relationship between a finite group and its irreducible characters; the algebraic structure determines a set of numerical invariants, and arithmetic properties of the invariants provides feedback in the form of restrictions on the algebraic structure. One of the main points of these Notes is to explain how this works, and to give some reasonably interesting examples.

Exceptional Vertex Operator Algebras and the Virasoro Algebra

We consider exceptional vertex operator algebras for which particular Casimir vectors constructed from the primary vectors of lowest conformal weight are Virasoro descendants of the vacuum. We discuss constraints on these theories that follow from an analysis of appropriate genus zero and genus one two point correlation functions. We find explicit differential equations for the partition function in the cases where the lowest weight primary vectors form a Lie algebra or a Griess algebra. Examples include the Wess-Zumino-Witten model for Deligne's exceptional Lie algebras and the Moonshine Module. We partially verify the irreducible decomposition of the tensor product of Deligne's exceptional Lie algebras and consider the possibility of similar decompositions for tensor products of the Griess algebra. We briefly discuss some conjectured extremal vertex operator algebras arising in Witten's recent work on three dimensional black holes.

Monstrous and Generalized Moonshine and Permutation Orbifolds

We consider the application of permutation orbifold constructions towards a new possible understanding of the genus zero property in Monstrous and Generalized Moonshine. We describe a theory of twisted Hecke operators in this setting and conjecture on the form of Generalized Moonshine replication formulas.

The Genus Two Partition Function for Free Bosonic and Lattice Vertex Operator Algebras

We define the $n$-point function for a vertex operator algebra on a genus two Riemann surface in two separate sewing schemes where either two tori are sewn together or a handle is sewn to one torus. We explicitly obtain closed formulas for the genus two partition function for the Heisenberg free bosonic string and lattice vertex operator algebras in both sewing schemes. We prove that the partition functions are holomorphic in the sewing parameters on given suitable domains and describe their modular properties. Finally, we show that the partition functions cannot be equal in the neighborhood of a two-tori degeneration point where they can be explicitly compared.

Torus n-Point Functions for $\mathbb{R}$-graded Vertex Operator Superalgebras and Continuous Fermion Orbifolds

We consider genus one n-point functions for a vertex operator superalgebra with a real grading. We compute all n-point functions for rank one and rank two fermion vertex operator superalgebras. In the rank two fermion case, we obtain all orbifold n-point functions for a twisted module associated with a continuous automorphism generated by a Heisenberg bosonic state. The modular properties of these orbifold n-point functions are given and we describe a generalization of Fay's trisecant identity for elliptic functions.

The Virasoro Algebra and Some Exceptional Lie and Finite Groups

We describe a number of relationships between properties of the vacuum Verma module of a Virasoro algebra and the automorphism group of certain vertex operator algebras. These groups include the Deligne exceptional series of simple Lie groups and some exceptional finite simple groups including the Monster and Baby Monster.

On Genus Two Riemann Surfaces Formed from Sewn Tori

We describe the period matrix and other data on a higher genus Riemann surface in terms of data coming from lower genus surfaces via an explicit sewing procedure. We consider in detail the construction of a genus two Riemann surface by either sewing two punctured tori together or by sewing a twice-punctured torus to itself. In each case the genus two period matrix is explicitly described as a holomorphic map from a suitable domain (parameterized by genus one moduli and sewing parameters) to the Siegel upper half plane $\mathbb{H}_{2}$. Equivariance of these maps under certain subgroups of $Sp(4,\mathbb{Z)}$ is shown. The invertibility of both maps in a particular domain of $\mathbb{H}_{2}$ is also shown.

Rational Generalised Moonshine from Abelian Orbifoldings of the Moonshine Module

We consider orbifoldings of the Moonshine Module with respect to the abelian group generated by a pair of commuting Monster group elements with one of prime order $p=2,3,5,7$ and the other of order $pk$ for $k=1$ or $k$ prime. We show that constraints arising from meromorphic orbifold conformal field theory allow us to demonstrate that each orbifold partition function with rational coefficients is either constant or is a hauptmodul for an explicitly found modular fixing group of genus zero. We thus confirm in the cases considered the Generalised Moonshine conjectures for all rational modular functions for the Monster centralisers related to the Baby Monster, Fischer, Harada-Norton and Held sporadic simple groups. We also derive non-trivial constraints on the possible Monster conjugacy classes to which the elements of the orbifolding abelian group may belong.

Some Irrational Generalised Moonshine from Orbifolds

We verify the Generalised Moonshine conjectures for some irrational modular functions for the Monster centralisers related to the Harada-Norton, Held, $M_{12}$ and $L_3(3)$ simple groups based on certain orbifolding constraints. We find explicitly the fixing groups of the hauptmoduls arising in each case.

Genus Two Meromorphic Conformal Field Theory

We construct the genus two (or two loop) partition function for meromorphic bosonic conformal field theories. We use a sewing procedure involving two genus one tori by exploiting an explicit relationship between the genus two period matrix and pinching modular parameters. We obtain expressions for the partition function for the chiral bosonic string, even rank lattice theories and self-dual meromorphic conformal field theories including the Moonshine Module. In particular, we find that for self-dual theories with central charge 24, the genus two partition function multiplied by a universal holomorphic function of the moduli is given by a meromorphic Siegel modular form of weight 2 where this universal function includes ghost contributions. We also discuss a novel expansion for certain Siegel modular forms.

Generalised Moonshine and Abelian Orbifold Constructions

We consider the application of Abelian orbifold constructions in Meromorphic Conformal Field Theory (MCFT) towards an understanding of various aspects of Monstrous Moonshine and Generalised Moonshine. We review some of the basic concepts in MCFT and Abelian orbifold constructions of MCFTs and summarise some of the relevant physics lore surrounding such constructions including aspects of the modular group, the fusion algebra and the notion of a self-dual MCFT. The FLM Moonshine Module, $V^\natural$, is historically the first example of such a construction being a $Z_2$ orbifolding of the Leech lattice MCFT, $V^Λ$. We review the usefulness of these ideas in understanding Monstrous Moonshine, the genus zero property for Thompson series which we have shown is equivalent to the property that the only meromorphic $Z_n$ orbifoldings of $V^\natural$ are $V^Λ$ and $V^\natural$ itself (assuming that $V^\natural$ is uniquely determined by its characteristic function $J(τ)$. We show that these constraints on the possible $Z_n$ orbifoldings of $V^\natural$ are also sufficient to demonstrate the genus zero property for Generalised Moonshine functions in the simplest non-trivial prime cases by considering $Z_p\times Z_p$ orbifoldings of $V^\natural$. Thus Monstrous Moonshine implies Generalised Moonshine in these cases.

On the Relationship between the Uniqueness of the Moonshine Module and Monstrous Moonshine

We consider the relationship between the conjectured uniqueness of the Moonshine Module, ${\cal V}^\natural$, and Monstrous Moonshine, the genus zero property of the modular invariance group for each Monster group Thompson series. We first discuss a family of possible $Z_n$ meromorphic orbifold constructions of ${\cal V}^\natural$ based on automorphisms of the Leech lattice compactified bosonic string. We reproduce the Thompson series for all 51 non-Fricke classes of the Monster group $M$ together with a new relationship between the centralisers of these classes and 51 corresponding Conway group centralisers (generalising a well-known relationship for 5 such classes). Assuming that ${\cal V}^\natural$ is unique, we then consider meromorphic orbifoldings of ${\cal V}^\natural$ and show that Monstrous Moonshine holds if and only if the only meromorphic orbifoldings of ${\cal V}^\natural$ give ${\cal V}^\natural$ itself or the Leech theory. This constraint on the meromorphic orbifoldings of ${\cal V}^\natural$ therefore relates Monstrous Moonshine to the uniqueness of ${\cal V}^\natural$ in a new way.

Monstrous Moonshine and the uniqueness of the Moonshine module

In this talk we consider the relationship between the conjectured uniqueness of the Moonshine module of Frenkel, Lepowsky and Meurman and Monstrous Moonshine, the genus zero property for Thompson series discovered by Conway and Norton. We discuss some evidence to support the uniqueness of the Moonshine module by considering possible alternative orbifold constructions from a Leech lattice compactified string. Within these constructions we find a new relationship between the centralisers of the Monster group and the Conway group generalising an observation made by Conway and Norton. We also relate the uniqueness of the Moonshine module to Monstrous Moonshine and argue that given this uniqueness, then the genus zero properties hold if and only if orbifolding the Moonshine module with respect to a Monster element reproduces the Moonshine module or the Leech theory.
