Dynamics of Warped Flux Compactifications

We discuss the four dimensional effective action for type IIB flux compactifications, and obtain the quadratic terms taking warp effects into account. The analysis includes both the 4-d zero modes and their KK excitations, which become light at large warping. We identify an `axial' type gauge for the supergravity fluctuations, which makes the four dimensional degrees of freedom manifest. The other key ingredient is the existence of constraints coming from the ten dimensional equations of motion. Applying these conditions leads to considerable simplifications, enabling us to obtain the low energy lagrangian explicitly. In particular, the warped Kähler potential for metric moduli is computed and it is shown that there are no mixings with the KK fluctuations and the result differs from previous proposals. The four dimensional potential contains a generalization of the Gukov-Vafa-Witten term, plus usual mass terms for KK modes.

Warping and Supersymmetry Breaking

We analyze supersymmetry breaking by anti-self-dual flux in the deformed conifold. This theory has been argued to be a dual realization of susy breaking by antibranes. As such, one might expect it to lead to a hierarchically small breaking scale, but only if the warp factor is taken into account. We verify this by explicitly computing the warp-modified moduli space metric. This leads to a new term, with a power-like divergence at the conifold point, which lowers the breaking scale. We finally point out various puzzles regarding the gauge theory interpretation of these results.

Calabi-Yau Metrics for Quotients and Complete Intersections

We extend previous computations of Calabi-Yau metrics on projective hypersurfaces to free quotients, complete intersections, and free quotients of complete intersections. In particular, we construct these metrics on generic quintics, four-generation quotients of the quintic, Schoen Calabi-Yau complete intersections and the quotient of a Schoen manifold with Z_3 x Z_3 fundamental group that was previously used to construct a heterotic standard model. Various numerical investigations into the dependence of Donaldson's algorithm on the integration scheme, as well as on the Kahler and complex structure moduli, are also performed.

Flux Compactification

We review recent work in which compactifications of string and M theory are constructed in which all scalar fields (moduli) are massive, and supersymmetry is broken with a small positive cosmological constant, features needed to reproduce real world physics. We explain how this work implies that there is a ``landscape'' of string/M theory vacua, perhaps containing many candidates for describing real world physics, and present the arguments for and against this idea. We discuss statistical surveys of the landscape, and the prospects for testable consequences of this picture, such as observable effects of moduli, constraints on early cosmology, and predictions for the scale of supersymmetry breaking.

Numerical Calabi-Yau metrics

We develop numerical methods for approximating Ricci flat metrics on Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in projective spaces. Our approach is based on finding balanced metrics, and builds on recent theoretical work by Donaldson. We illustrate our methods in detail for a one parameter family of quintics. We also suggest several ways to extend our results.

The landscape of intersecting brane models

We develop tools for analyzing the space of intersecting brane models. We apply these tools to a particular T^6/Z_2^2 orientifold which has been used for model building. We prove that there are a finite number of intersecting brane models on this orientifold which satisfy the Diophantine equations coming from supersymmetry. We give estimates for numbers of models with specific gauge groups, which we confirm numerically. We analyze the distributions and correlations of intersection numbers which characterize the numbers of generations of chiral fermions, and show that intersection numbers are roughly independent, with a characteristic distribution which is peaked around 0 and in which integers with fewer divisors are mildly suppressed. As an application, the number of models containing a gauge group SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) or SU(4) x SU(2) x SU(2) and 3 generations of appropriate types of chiral matter is estimated to be order O (10), in accord with previous explicit constructions. As another application of the methods developed in the paper, we construct a new pair of 3-generation SU(4) x SU(2) x SU(2) Pati-Salam models using intersecting branes. We conclude with a description of how this analysis can be generalized to a broader class of Calabi-Yau orientifolds, and a discussion of how the numbers of IBM's are related to numbers of stabilized vacua.

Branes, Bundles and Attractors: Bogomolov and Beyond

We discuss conjectures following from the attractor mechanism in type II string theory about the possible Chern classes of stable holomorphic vector bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds. In particular, we give sufficient conditions for Chern classes to correspond to stable bundles.

Numerical solution to the hermitian Yang-Mills equation on the Fermat quintic

We develop an iterative method for finding solutions to the hermitian Yang-Mills equation on stable holomorphic vector bundles, following ideas recently developed by Donaldson. As illustrations, we construct numerically the hermitian Einstein metrics on the tangent bundle and a rank three vector bundle on P^2. In addition, we find a hermitian Yang-Mills connection on a stable rank three vector bundle on the Fermat quintic.

Computational complexity of the landscape I

We study the computational complexity of the physical problem of finding vacua of string theory which agree with data, such as the cosmological constant, and show that such problems are typically NP hard. In particular, we prove that in the Bousso-Polchinski model, the problem is NP complete. We discuss the issues this raises and the possibility that, even if we were to find compelling evidence that some vacuum of string theory describes our universe, we might never be able to find that vacuum explicitly. In a companion paper, we apply this point of view to the question of how early cosmology might select a vacuum.

Critical points and supersymmetric vacua, II: Asymptotics and extremal metrics

Motivated by the vacuum selection problem of string/M theory, we study a new geometric invariant of a positive Hermitian line bundle $(L, h)\to M$ over a compact Kähler manifold: the expected distribution of critical points of a Gaussian random holomorphic section $s \in H^0(M, L)$ with respect to the Chern connection $\nabla_h$. It is a measure on $M$ whose total mass is the average number $\mathcal{N}^{crit}_h$ of critical points of a random holomorphic section. We are interested in the metric dependence of $\mathcal{N}^{crit}_h$, especially metrics $h$ which minimize $\mathcal{N}^{crit}_h$. We concentrate on the asymptotic minimization problem for the sequence of tensor powers $(L^N, h^N)\to M$ of the line bundle and their critical point densities $\mathcal{K}^{crit}_{N,h}(z)$. We prove that $\mathcal{K}^{crit}_{N,h}(z)$ has a complete asymptotic expansion in $N$ whose coefficients are curvature invariants of $h$. The first two terms in the expansion of $\mathcal{N}^{crit}_{N,h}$ are topological invariants of $(L, M)$. The third term is a topological invariant plus a constant $β_2(m)$ (depending only on the dimension $m$ of $M$) times the Calabi functional $\int_M ρ^2 dV_h$, where $ρ$ is the scalar curvature of the Kähler metric $ω_h:=\frac i2 Θ_h$. We give an integral formula for $β_2(m)$ and show, by a computer assisted calculation, that $β_2(m)>0$ for $m\leq 5$, hence that $\mathcal{N}^{crit}_{N,h}$ is asymptotically minimized by the Calabi extremal metric (when one exists). We conjecture that $β_2(m)>0$ in all dimensions, i.e. the Calabi extremal metric is always the asymptotic minimizer.

Critical points and supersymmetric vacua, III: String/M models

A fundamental problem in contemporary string/M theory is to count the number of inequivalent vacua satisfying constraints in a string theory model. This article contains the first rigorous results on the number and distribution of supersymmetric vacua of type IIb string theories compactified on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$ with flux. In particular, complete proofs of the counting formulas in Ashok-Douglas and Denef-Douglas are given, together with van der Corput style remainder estimates. We also give evidence that the number of vacua satisfying the tadpole constraint in regions of bounded curvature in moduli space is of exponential growth in $b_3(X)$.

Finiteness of volume of moduli spaces

We give a ``physics proof'' of a conjecture made by the first author at Strings 2005, that the moduli spaces of certain conformal field theories are finite volume in the Zamolodchikov metric, using an RG flow argument.

Fixing All Moduli in a Simple F-Theory Compactification

We discuss a simple example of an F-theory compactification on a Calabi-Yau fourfold where background fluxes, together with nonperturbative effects from Euclidean D3 instantons and gauge dynamics on D7 branes, allow us to fix all closed and open string moduli. We explicitly check that the known higher order corrections to the potential, which we neglect in our leading approximation, only shift the results by a small amount. In our exploration of the model, we encounter interesting new phenomena, including examples of transitions where D7 branes absorb O3 planes, while changing topology to preserve the net D3 charge.

Distributions of nonsupersymmetric flux vacua

We continue the study of the distribution of nonsupersymmetric flux vacua in IIb string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau manifolds, as in hep-th/0404116. We show that the basic structure of this problem is that of finding eigenvectors of the matrix of second derivatives of the superpotential, and that many features of the results are determined by features of the generic ensemble of such matrices, the CI ensemble of Altland and Zirnbauer originating in mesoscopic physics. We study some simple examples in detail, exhibiting various factors which can favor low or high scale supersymmetry breaking.
