Mesoscopic Effects in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime

Edge states of the quantum Hall fluid provide an opportunity to study mesoscopic effects in a highly correlated electron system that is both experimentally accessible and theoretically tractable. In this paper we review recent work on the persistent current and Aharonov-Bohm magnetoconductance oscillations in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime.

Aharonov-Bohm effect in the chiral Luttinger liquid

Edge states of the quantum Hall fluid provide an almost unparalled opportunity to study mesoscopic effects in a highly correlated electron system. In this paper we develop a bosonization formalism for the finite-size edge state, as described by chiral Luttinger liquid theory, and use it to study the Aharonov-Bohm effect. The problem we address may be realized experimentally by measuring the tunneling current between two edge states through a third edge state formed around an antidot in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime. A renormalization group analysis reveals the existence of a two-parameter universal scaling function G(X,Y) that describes the Aharonov-Bohm resonances. We also show that the strong renormalization of the tunneling amplitudes that couple the antidot to the incident edge states, together with the nature of the Aharonov-Bohm interference process in a chiral system, prevent the occurrence of perfect resonances as the magnetic field is varied, even at zero temperature.

Dynamics of Electrons in Graded Semiconductors

I present a theory of electron dynamics in semiconductors with slowly varying composition. I show that the frequency-dependent conductivity, required for the description of transport and optical properties, can be obtained from a knowledge of the band structures and momentum matrix elements of homogeneous semiconductor alloys. New sum rules for the electronic oscillator strengths, which apply within a given energy band or between any two bands, are derived, and a general expression for the width of the intraband absorption peak is given. Finally, the low-frequency dynamics is discussed, and a correspondence with the semiclassical motion is established.

Mesoscopic Effects in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime: Chiral Luttinger versus Fermi Liquid

We study tunneling through an edge state formed around an antidot in the fractional quantum Hall regime using Wen's chiral Luttinger liquid theory extended to include mesoscopic effects. We identify a new regime where the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation amplitude exhibits a distinctive crossover from Luttinger liquid power-law behavior to Fermi-liquid-like behavior as the temperature is increased. Near the crossover temperature the amplitude has a pronounced maximum. This non-monotonic behavior and novel high-temperature nonlinear phenomena that we also predict provide new ways to distinguish experimentally between Luttinger and Fermi liquids.

New sum rules for an electron in a periodic or nearly periodic potential

I derive new sum rules for the electronic oscillator strengths in a periodic or nearly periodic potential, which apply within a single energy band and between any two bands. The physical origin of these sum rules is quite unlike that of conventional sum rules, and is shown to be associated with a solid-state counterpart to the principle of spectroscopic stability known in atomic physics.

Current-Carrying Ground States in Mesoscopic and Macroscopic Systems

We extend a theorem of Bloch, which concerns the net orbital current carried by an interacting electron system in equilibrium, to include mesoscopic effects. We obtain a rigorous upper bound to the allowed ground-state current in a ring or disc, for an interacting electron system in the presence of static but otherwise arbitrary electric and magnetic fields. We also investigate the effects of spin-orbit and current-current interactions on the upper bound. Current-current interactions, caused by the magnetic field produced at a point r by a moving electron at r, are found to reduce the upper bound by an amount that is determined by the self-inductance of the system. A solvable model of an electron system that includes current-current interactions is shown to realize our upper bound, and the upper bound is compared with measurements of the persistent current in a single ring.

Equilibrium Current and Orbital Magnetization in a Quantum Hall Fluid

We present a general theory for the equilibrium current distribution in an interacting two-dimensional electron gas subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field, and confined by a potential that varies slowly on the scale of the magnetic length. The distribution is found to consist of strips or channels of current, which alternate in direction, and which have universal integrated strength.

Universal Equilibrium Currents in the Quantum Hall Fluid

The equilibrium current distribution in a quantum Hall fluid that is subjected to a slowly varying confining potential is shown to generally consist of strips or channels of current, which alternate in direction, and which have universal integrated strengths. A measurement of these currents would yield direct independent measurements of the proper quasiparticle and quasihole energies in the fractional quantum Hall states.

Currents in the Compressible and Incompressible Regions of the 2DEG

We derive a general expression for the low-temperature current distribution in a two-dimensional electron gas, subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field and in a confining potential that varies slowly on the scale of the magnetic length l. The analysis is based on a self-consistent one-electron description, such as the Hartree or standard Kohn-Sham equations. Our expression, which correctly describes the current distribution on scales larger than l, has two components: One is an ``edge current'' which is proportional to the local density gradient and the other is a ``bulk current'' which is proportional to the gradient of the confining potential. The direction of these currents generally displays a striking alternating pattern.

Bound on the Group Velocity of an Electron in a 1D Periodic Potential

By using a recently derived upper bound on the allowed equilibrium current in a ring, it is proved that the magnitude of the group velocity of a Bloch electron in a one-dimensional periodic potential is always less than or equal to the group velocity of the same Bloch state in an empty lattice. Our inequality also implies that each energy band in a one-dimensional crystal always lies below the corresponding free-electron band, when the minima of those bands are aligned.
