Memory-Controlled Diffusion

Memory effects require for their incorporation into random-walk models an extension of the conventional equations. The linear Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density $p(\vec r, t)$ is generalized to include non-linear and non-local spatial-temporal memory effects. The realization of the memory kernels are restricted due the conservation of the basic quantity $p$. A general criteria is given for the existence of stationary solutions. In case the memory kernel depends on $p$ polynomially the transport is prevented. Owing to the delay effects a finite amount of particles remains localized and the further transport is terminated. For diffusion with non-linear memory effects we find an exact solution in the long-time limit. Although the mean square displacement shows diffusive behavior, higher order cumulants exhibits differences to diffusion and they depend on the memory strength.

Memory-Controlled Annihilation Reactions

We consider a diffusion-limited reaction in case the reacting entities are not available simultaneously. Due to the fact that the reaction takes place after a spatiotemporal accumulation of reactants, the underlying rate equation has to be modified by additional non-local terms. Owing to the delay effects a finite amount of reactants remains localized, preventing a further reaction and the asymptotic decay is terminated at a finite density. The resulting inhomogeneous non-zero stationary concentration is stable against long wave length fluctuations. Below a critical wave vector $k_c$ the system becomes inert, whereas a complete decay is realized above $k_c$. The phase diagram for the one species-annihilation process $A + A \to 0$ exhibits a behavior comparable to a second order phase transition. Obviously the memory effects are equivalent to long range interaction and the non-local kinetics is basically independent on space dimensions.

Moduli Stabilization from Fluxes in a Simple IIB Orientifold

We study novel type IIB compactifications on the T^6/Z_2 orientifold. This geometry arises in the T-dual description of Type I theory on T^6, and one normally introduces 16 space-filling D3-branes to cancel the RR tadpoles. Here, we cancel the RR tadpoles either partially or fully by turning on three-form flux in the compact geometry. The resulting (super)potential for moduli is calculable. We demonstrate that one can find many examples of N=1 supersymmetric vacua with greatly reduced numbers of moduli in this system. A few examples with N>1 supersymmetry or complete supersymmetry breaking are also discussed.

Mode Coupling Approach for spin-facilitated kinetic Ising models

The d-dimensional n-spin facilitated kinetic Ising model is studied analytically starting from usual master equations and their transformation into a Fock-space representation. The evolution of relevant operators is rewritten in terms of a projection formalism. The obtained frequency matrices and memory terms are analyzed. Especially, the influences of the memory terms is approached by using standard techniques of the usual mode coupling approach. The temperature dependence of the relaxation times related to the n-spin facilitated kinetic Ising model shows a weak non-Arrhenius behavior. Furthermore, a characteristic stretched decay of the correlation function is obtained.

Collective Diffusion and a Random Energy Landscape

Starting from a master equation in a quantum Hamiltonian form and a coupling to a heat bath we derive an evolution equation for a collective hopping process under the influence of a stochastic energy landscape. There results different equations in case of an arbitrary occupation number per lattice site or in a system under exclusion. Based on scaling arguments it will be demonstrated that both systems belong below the critical dimension $d_c$ to the same universality class leading to anomalous diffusion in the long time limit. The dynamical exponent $z$ can be calculated by an $ε= d_c-d$ expansion. Above the critical dimension we discuss the differences in the diffusion constant for sufficient high temperatures. For a random potential we find a higher mobility for systems with exclusion.

Bounds on curved domain walls in 5d gravity

We discuss maximally symmetric curved deformations of the flat domain wall solutions of five-dimensional dilaton gravity that appeared in a recent approach to the cosmological constant problem. By analyzing the bulk field configurations and the boundary conditions at a four-dimensional maximally symmetric curved domain wall, we obtain constraints on such solutions. For a special dilaton coupling to the brane tension that appeared in recent works, we find no curved deformations, confirming and extending slightly a result of Arkani-Hamed et al which was argued using a $Z_2$-symmetry of the solution. For more general dilaton-dependent brane tension, we find that the curvature is bounded by the Kaluza-Klein scale in the fifth dimension.

Self-tuning flat domain walls in 5d gravity and string theory

We present Poincare invariant domain wall (``3-brane'') solutions to some 5-dimensional effective theories which can arise naturally in string theory. In particular, we find theories where Poincare invariant solutions exist for arbitrary values of the brane tension, for certain restricted forms of the bulk interactions. We describe examples in string theory where it would be natural for the quantum corrections to the tension of the brane (arising from quantum fluctuations of modes with support on the brane) to maintain the required form of the action. In such cases, the Poincare invariant solutions persist in the presence of these quantum corrections to the brane tension, so that no 4d cosmological constant is generated by these modes.

Drift of a polymer chain in disordered media

We consider the drift of a polymer chain in a disordered medium, which is caused by a constant force applied to the one end of the polymer, under neglecting the thermal fluctuations. In the lowest order of the perturbation theory we have computed the transversal fluctuations of the centre of mass of the polymer, the transversal and the longitudinal size of the polymer, and the average velocity of the polymer. The corrections to the quantities under consideration, which are due to the interplay between the motion and the quenched forces, are controlled by the driving force and the degree of polymerization. The transversal fluctuations of the Brownian particle and of the centre of mass of the polymer are obtained to be diffusive. The transversal fluctuations studied in the present Letter may also be of relevance for the related problem of the drift of a directed polymer in disordered media and its applications.

The Equation of State of a Gaussian Phantom Network with Defined Cross Link Functionality

A phantom network of Gaussian chains far from the point of gelation can be described as a gas of interacting particles represented by the cross links. The type of particles varies with the network functionality, whereas the type of interaction depends on the properties of the connecting chains. In a mean field approximation the Equation of State can be calculated using Mayer's cluster expansion. The resulting isothermal compressibility is compared for different cross link functionalities.

Freezing of Spinodal Decompostion by Irreversible Chemical Growth Reaction

We present a description of the freezing of spinodal decomposition in systems, which contain simultaneous irreversible chemical reactions, in the hydrodynamic limit approximation. From own results we conclude, that the chemical reaction leads to an onset of spinodal decomposition also in the case of an initial system which is completely miscible and can lead to an extreme retardation of the dynamics of the spinodal decomposition, with the probability of a general freezing of this process, which can be experimetally observed in simultaneous IPN formation.
