A note on the uniqueness of minimal length carrier graphs

We show that minimal length carrier graphs are not unique, but if M is in a large class of hyperbolic 3-manifolds, including the geometrically finite ones, then M has only finitely many minimal length carrier graphs and no two of them are homotopic. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof that the isometry group of a geometrically finite 3-manifold is finite.

Lengths of edges in carrier graphs

We show that if X is a minimal length carrier graph in a hyperbolic 3-manifold, M, then if X contains a sufficiently short edge, it must contain a short circuit, as well. The meaning of "short" depends only on the rank of the fundamental group of M. We also expand the class of manifolds which are known to have minimal length carrier graphs.

Variations of a Coin-Removal Problem

Given a set of coins arranged in a line, we remove heads-up coins one at a time and flip any adjacent coins after each removal. The coin-removal problem is to determine for which arrangements of coins it is possible to remove all of the coins. In this paper we consider a variation of the problem in which gaps created by removing coins are eliminated by pushing the coins together. We characterize the set of removable arrangements and show that this set forms a regular language. We use a finite automaton to find a recursive formula for the number of removable arrangements of different lengths.
