Hilbert Modules - Square Roots of Positive Maps

We reflect on the notions of positivity and square roots. We review many examples which underline our thesis that square roots of positive maps related to *-algebras are Hilbert modules. As a result of our considerations we discuss requirements a notion of positivity on a *-algebra should fulfill and derive some basic consequences.

The Spatial Product of Arveson Systems is Intrinsic

We prove that the spatial product of two spatial Arveson systems is independent of the choice of the reference units. This also answers the same question for the minimal dilation the Powers sum of two spatial CP-semigroups: It is independent up to cocycle conjugacy.

Subsystems of Fock Need Not Be Fock: Spatial CP-Semigroups

We show that a product subsystem of a time ordered system (that is, a product system of time ordered Fock modules), though type I, need not be isomorphic to a time ordered product system. In that way, we answer an open problem in the classification of CP-semigroups by product systems. We define spatial strongly continuous CP-semigroups on a unital C*-algebra and characterize them as those that have a Christensen-Evans generator.

Nondegenerate Representations of Continuous Product Systems

We show that every (continuous) faithful product system admits a (continuous) faithful nondegenerate representation. For Hilbert spaces this is equivalent to Arveson's result that every Arveson system comes from an E_0-semigroup. We point out that for Hilbert modules this is not so. As applications we show a C*-algebra version of a result for von Neumann algebras due to Arveson and Kishimoto, and a result about existence of elementary dilations for (semi-)faithful CP-semigroups.

E_0-Semigroups for Continuous Poduct Systems: The Nonunital Case

Let B be a sigma-unital C*-algebra. We show that every strongly continuous E_0-semigroup on the algebra of adjointable operators on a full Hilbert B-module E gives rise to a full continuous product system of correspondences over B. We show that every full continuous product system of correspondences over B arises in that way. If the product system is countably generated, then E can be chosen countable generated, and if E is countably generated, then so is the product system. We show that under these countability hypotheses there is a one-to-one correspondence between E_0-semigroup up to stable cocycle conjugacy and continuous product systems up isomorphism. This generalizes the results for unital B to the sigma-unital case.

The Powers Sum of spatial CPD-semigroups and CP-semigroups

We define spatial CPD-semigroup and construct their Powers sum. We construct the Powers sum for general spatial CP-semigroups. In both cases, we show that the product system of that Powers sum is the product of the spatial product systems of its factors. We show that on the domain of intersection, pointwise bounded CPD-semigroups on the one side and Schur CP-semigroups on the other, the constructions coincide. This summarizes all known results about Powers sums and generalizes them considerably.

Extending the Set of Quadratic Exponential Vectors

We extend the square of white noise algebra over the step functions on R to the test function space of bounded square-integrable functions on R^d, and we show that in the Fock representation the exponential vectors exist for all test functions bounded by 1/2.

Maximal Commutative Subalgebras Invariant for CP-Maps: (Counter-)Examples

We solve, mainly by counterexamples, many natural questions regarding maximal commutative subalgebras invariant under CP-maps or semigroups of CP-maps on a von Neumann algebra. In particular, we discuss the structure of the generators of norm continuous semigroups on B(G) leaving a maximal commutative subalgebra invariant and show that there exists Markov CP-semigroups on M_d without invariant maximal commutative subalgebras for any d>2.

Transformations of Lévy Processes

A Lévy process on a *-bialgebra is given by its generator, a conditionally positive hermitian linear functional vanishing at the unit element. A *-algebra homomorphism k from a *-bialgebra C to a *-bialgebra B with the property that k respects the counits maps generators on B to generators on C. A tranformation between the corrresponding two Lévy processes is given by forming infinitesimal convolution products. This general result is applied to various situations, e.g., to a *-bialgebra and its associated primitive tensor *-bialgebra (called "generator process") as well as its associated group-like *-bialgebra (called Weyl-*-bialgebra). It follows that a Lévy process on a *-bialgebra can be realized on Bose Fock space as the infinitesimal convolution product of its generator process such that the vacuum vector is cyclic for the L\e'vy process. Moreover, we obtain convolution approximations of the Azéma martingale by the Wiener process and vice versa.

A Problem of Powers and the Product of Spatial Product Systems

In the 2002 AMS summer conference on ``Advances in Quantum Dynamics'' in Mount Holyoke Robert Powers proposed a sum operation for spatial E0-semigroups. Still during the conference Skeide showed that the Arveson system of that sum is the product of spatial Arveson systems. This product may but need not coincide with the tensor product of Arveson systems. The Powers sum of two spatial E0-semigroups is, therefore, up to cocycle conjugacy Skeide's product of spatial noises.

Product Systems; a Survey with Commutants in View

The theory of product systems both of Hilbert spaces (Arveson systems) and product systems of Hilbert modules has reached a status where it seems appropriate to rest a moment and to have a look at what is known so far and what are open problems. However, the attempt to give an approximately complete account in view pages is destined to fail already for Arveson systems since Tsirelson, Powers and Liebscher have discovered their powerful methods to construct large classes of examples. In this survey we concentrate on that part of the theory that works also for Hilbert modules. This does not only help to make a selection among the possible topics, but it also helps to shed some new light on the case of Arveson systems. Often, proofs that work for Hilbert modules also lead to simpler proofs in the case of Hilbert spaces. We put emphasis on those aspects that arise from recent results about commutants of von Neumann correspondences, which, in the case of Hilbert spaces, explain the relation between the Arveson system and the Bhat system associated with an E_0--semigroup on B(H).

Isometric Dilations of Representations of Product Systems via Commutants

We construct a weak dilation of a not necessarily unital CP-semigroup to an E-semigroup acting on the adjointable operators of a Hilbert module with a unit vector. We construct the dilation in such a way that the dilating E-semigroup has a pre-assigned product system. Then, making use of the commutant of von Neumann correspondences, we apply the dilation theorem to proof that covariant representations of product systems admit isometric dilations.

Restrictions of CP-Semigroups to Maximal Commutative Subalgebras

We give a necessary and sufficient criterion when a normal CP-map on a von Neumann algebra admits a restriction to a maximal commutative subalgebra. We apply this result to give a far reaching generalization of Rebolledo's sufficient criterion for the Lindblad generator of a Markov semigroup on B(G).

Generators of Dynamical Systems on Hilbert Modules

We characterize the generators of dynamical systems on Hilbert modules as those generators of one-parameter groups of Banach space isometries which are ternary derivations. We investigate in how far a similar condition can be expressed in terms of generalized derivations.

Existence of $E_0$--Semigroups for Arveson Systems: Making Two Proofs into One

Since quite a time there were available only two rather difficult and involved proofs, the original one by Arveson and a more recent one by Liebscher, of the fact that for every Arveson system there exists an E_0-semigroup. We put together two recent short proofs, one by Skeide and one by Arveson, to obtain a still simpler one, which unfies the advantages of each proof and discards with their disadvantages.

Constructing Units in Product Systems

We prove a criterion that allows to construct units in product systems of correspondences with prescribed infinitesimal characterizations. This criterion summarizes proofs of known results and new applications. It also frees the hypothesis from the assumption that the units are contained in a product system of time ordered Fock modules.
