Weak And Strong Type Estimates for Maximal Truncations of Calderón-Zygmund Operators on $ A_p$ Weighted Spaces

For 1<p< \infty, weight w \in A_p, and any L ^2 -bounded Calderón-Zygmund operator T, we show that there is a constant C(T,P) so that we prove the sharp norm dependence on T_#, the maximal truncations of T, in both weak and strong type L^p(w) norms. Namely, for the weak type norm, T_# maps L^p(w) to weak-L^p(w) with norm at most \|w\|_{A_p}. And for the strong type norm, the norm estimate is \|w\|_{A_p}^{\max(1, (p-1) ^{-1})}. These estimates are not improvable in the power of \lVert w\rVert_{A_p}. Our argument follows the outlines of the arguments of Lacey-Petermichl-Reguera (Math.\ Ann.\ 2010) and Hytönen-Pérez-Treil-Volberg (arXiv, 2010) with new ingredients, including a weak-type estimate for certain duals of T_#, and sufficient conditions for two weight inequalities in L ^{p} for T_#. Our proof does not rely upon extrapolation.

A Two Weight Inequality for the Hilbert transform Assuming an Energy Hypothesis

Subject to a range of side conditions, the two weight inequality for the Hilbert transform is characterized in terms of (1) a Poisson A_2 condition on the weights (2) A forward testing condition, in which the two weight inequality is tested on intervals (3) and a backwards testing condition, dual to (2). A critical new concept in the proof is an Energy Condition, which incorporates information about the distribution of the weights in question inside intervals. This condition is a consequence of the three conditions above. The Side Conditions are termed 'Energy Hypotheses'. At one endpoint they are necessary for the two weight inequality, and at the other, they are the Pivotal Conditions of Nazarov-Treil-Volberg. This new concept is combined with a known proof strategy devised by Nazarov-Treil-Volberg. A counterexample shows that the Pivotal Condition are not necessary for the two weight inequality.

Two Weight Inequalities for Discrete Positive Operators

We characterize two weight inequalities for general positive dyadic operators. We consider both weak and strong type inequalities, and general (p,q) mapping properties. Special cases include Sawyers Fractional Integral operator results from 1988, and the bilinear embedding inequality of Nazarov-Treil-Volberg from 1999. The method of proof is an extension of Sawyer's argument.

A Three Dimensional Signed Small Ball Inequality

The Small Ball Inequality is a conjectural lower bound on sums the L-infinity norm of sums of Haar functions supported on dyadic rectangles of a fixed volume in the unit cube. The conjecture is fundamental to questions in discrepancy theory, approximation theory and probability theory. In this article, we concentrate on a special case of the conjecture, and give the best known lower bound in dimension 3, using a conditional expectation argument.

Multi-Parameter Div-Curl Lemmas

We study the possible analogous of the Div-Curl Lemma in classical harmonic analysis and partial differential equations, but from the point of view of the multi-parameter setting. In this context we see two possible Div-Curl lemmas that arise. Extensions to differential forms are also given.

Sharp $ A_2$ Inequality for Haar Shift Operators

As a corollary to our main theorem we give a new proof of the result that the norm of the Hilbert transform on L^2(w) has norm bounded by a the A_2 characteristic of a weight to the first power, a theorem of one of us. This new proof begins as the prior proofs do, by passing to Haar shifts. Then, we apply a deep two-weight T1 theorem of Nazarov-Treil-Volberg, to reduce the matter to checking a certain carleson measure condition. This condition is checked with a corona decomposition of the weight. Prior proofs of this type have used Bellman functions, while this proof is flexible enough to address all Haar shifts at the same time.

Astala's Conjecture on Distortion of Hausdorff Measures under Quasiconformal Maps in the Plane

Let E be a compact set in the plane, g be a K-quasiconformal map, and let 0<t<2. Then H^t (E) = 0 implies H^{t'} (g E) = 0, for t'=[2Kt]/[2+(K-1)t]. This is a refinement of a set of inequalities on the distortion of Hausdorff dimensions by quasiconformal maps proved by K. Astala in his celebrated paper on area distortion for quasiconformal maps and answers in the positive a Conjecture of K. Astala in op. cit.

Exponential Squared Integrability for the Discrepancy Function in Two Dimensions

Let A_N be an N-point distribution in the unit square in the Euclidean plane. We consider the Discrepancy function D_N(x) in two dimensions with respect to rectangles with lower left corner anchored at the origin and upper right corner at the point x. This is the difference between the actual number of points of A_N in such a rectangle and the expected number of points - N x_1x_2 - in the rectangle. We prove sharp estimates for the BMO norm and the exponential squared Orlicz norm of D_N(x). For example we show that necessarily ||D_N||_(expL^2) >c(logN)^(1/2) for some aboslute constant c>0. On the other hand we use a digit scrambled version of the van der Corput set to show that this bound is tight in the case N=2^n, for some positive integer n. These results unify the corresponding classical results of Roth and Schmidt in a sharp fashion.

Iterated Riesz Commutators: A Simple Proof of Boundedness

We give a simple proof of L^p boundedness of iterated commutators of Riesz transforms and a product BMO function. We use a representation of the Riesz transforms by means of simple dyadic operators - dyadic shifts - which in turn reduces the estimate quickly to paraproduct estimates.

Three Dimensional Corners: A Box Norm Proof

In an additive group (G,+), a three-dimensional corner is the four points g, g+d(1,0,0), g+d(0,1,0), g+d(0,0,1), where g is in G^3, and d is a non-zero element of G. The Ramsey number of interest is R_3(G) the maximal cardinality of a subset of G^3 that does not contain a three-dimensional corner. Furstenberg and Katznelson have shown R_3(Z_N) is little-o of N^3, and in fact the corresponding result holds in all dimensions, a result that is a far reaching extension of the Szemeredi Theorem. We give a new proof of the finite field version of this fact, a proof that is a common generalization of the Gowers proof of Szemeredi's Theorem for four term progressions, and the result of Shkredov on two-dimensional corners. The principal tool are the Gowers Box Norms.

Composition of Haar Paraproducts: The Random Case

When is the composition of paraproducts bounded? This is an important, and difficult question, related to to a question of Sarason on composition of Hankel matrices, and the two-weight problem for the Hilbert transform. We consider randomized variants of this question, finding non-classical characterizations, for dyadic paraproducts.

A weak-type orthogonality principle

We prove a weak-type estimate for a class of operators extending some of the almost orthogonality issues involved in the study of the bilinear Hilbert transform by Lacey and Thiele.

On the Hilbert transform and lacunary directions in the plane

Let $H_k$ be the one dimensional Hilbert transform computed in the direction $(1,2^k)$ in the plane. We show that the maximal operator $\sup_k |H_kf|$ maps $L^p$ of the plane into itself for $1<p<\infty$. The same result with the Hilbert transform replaced by the one dimensional maximal function was proved by Nagel, Stein and Wainger in 1978.

On sets of integers not containing long arithmetic progressions

We construct subsets of {1,...,N} of cardinality at least N exp(-C(log N)^{1/(k+1)}) which do not contain arithmetic progressions of length 2^k+1. This extends a result of Behrend (1946) concerning sets which do not contain aritmetic progressions of length 3.

The bilinear maximal functions map into L^p for 2/3 < p <= 1

The bilinear maximal operator defined below maps $L^p\times L^q$ into $L^r$ provided $1 0}\frac1{2t}\int_{-t}^t\abs{f(x+y)g(x-y)} dy.$$ In particular $Mfg$ is integrable\thinspace if $f$ and $g$ are square integrable, answering a conjecture posed by Alberto Calderón.
