On the proportionality of Chern and Riemannian scalar curvatures

On a Kahler manifold there is a clear connection between the complex geometry and underlying Riemannian geometry. In some ways, this can be used to characterize the Kahler condition. While such a link is not so obvious in the non-Kahler setting, one can seek to understand extensions of these characterizations to general Hermitian manifolds. This idea has been the subject of much study from the cohomological side, however, the focus here is to address such a question from the perspective of curvature relationships. In particular, on compact manifolds the Kähler condition is characterized by the relationship that the Chern scalar curvature is equal to half the Riemannian scalar curvature. What we study here is the existence, or lack thereof, of non-Kahler Hermitian metrics for which a more general proportionality relationship between these scalar curvatures holds.

A smörgåsbord of scalar-flat Kähler ALE surfaces

There are many known examples of scalar-flat Kähler ALE surfaces, all of which have group at infinity either cyclic or contained in ${\rm{SU}}(2)$. The main result in this paper shows that for any non-cyclic finite subgroup $Γ\subset {\rm{U}}(2)$ containing no complex reflections, there exist scalar-flat Kähler ALE metrics on the minimal resolution of $\mathbb{C}^2 / Γ$, for which $Γ$ occurs as the group at infinity. Furthermore, we show that these metrics admit a holomorphic isometric circle action. It is also shown that there exist scalar-flat Kähler ALE metrics with respect to some small deformations of complex structure of the minimal resolution. Lastly, we show the existence of extremal Kähler metrics admitting holomorphic isometric circle actions in certain Kähler classes on the complex analytic compactifications of the minimal resolutions.

On Kähler conformal compactifications of $U(n)$-invariant ALE spaces

We prove that a certain class of ALE spaces always has a Kahler conformal compactification, and moreover provide explicit formulas for the conformal factor and the Kahler potential of said compactification. We then apply this to give a new and simple construction of the canonical Bochner-Kähler metric on certain weighted projective spaces, and also to explicitly construct a family Kahler edge-cone metrics on $\mathbb{CP}^2$, with singular set $\mathbb{CP}^1$, having cone angles $2πβ$ for all $β>0$. We conclude by discussing how these results can be used to obtain certain well-known Einstein metrics.

An equivalence of scalar curvatures on Hermitian manifolds

For a Kahler metric, the Riemannian scalar curvature is equal to twice the Chern scalar curvature. The question we address here is whether this equivalence can hold for a non-Kahler Hermitian metric. For such metrics, if they exist, the Chern scalar curvature would have the same geometric meaning as the Riemannian scalar curvature. Recently, Liu-Yang showed that if this equivalence of scalar curvatures holds even in average over a compact Hermitian manifold, then the metric must in fact be Kahler. However, we prove that a certain class of noncompact complex manifolds do admit Hermitian metrics for which this equivalence holds. Subsequently, the question of to what extent the behavior of said metrics can be dictated is addressed and a classification theorem is proved.

Quotient singularities, eta invariants, and self-dual metrics

There are three main components to this article: (i) A formula for the eta invariant of the signature complex for any finite subgroup of ${\rm{SO}}(4)$ acting freely on $S^3$ is given. An application of this is a non-existence result for Ricci-flat ALE metrics on certain spaces. (ii) A formula for the orbifold correction term that arises in the index of the self-dual deformation complex is proved for all finite subgroups of ${\rm{SO}}(4)$ which act freely on $S^3$. Some applications of this formula to the realm of self-dual and scalar-flat Kähler metrics are also discussed. (iii) Two infinite families of scalar-flat anti-self-dual ALE spaces with groups at infinity not contained in ${\rm{U}}(2)$ are constructed. Using these spaces, new examples of self-dual metrics on $n \# \mathbb{CP}^2$ are obtained for $n \geq 3$.

An index theorem for anti-self-dual orbifold-cone metrics

Recently, Atiyah and LeBrun proved versions of the Gauss-Bonnet and Hirzebruch signature Theorems for metrics with edge-cone singularities in dimension four, which they applied to obtain an inequality of Hitchin-Thorpe type for Einstein edge-cone metrics. Interestingly, many natural examples of edge-cone metrics in dimension four are anti-self-dual (or self-dual depending upon choice of orientation). On such a space there is an important elliptic complex called the anti-self-dual deformation complex, whose index gives crucial information about the local structure of the moduli space of anti-self-dual metrics. In this paper, we compute the index of this complex in the orbifold case, and give several applications.

Anti-self-dual orbifolds with cyclic quotient singularities

An index theorem for the anti-self-dual deformation complex on anti-self-dual orbifolds with cyclic quotient singularities is proved. We present two applications of this theorem. The first is to compute the dimension of the deformation space of the Calderbank-Singer scalar-flat Kahler toric ALE spaces. A corollary of this is that, except for the Eguchi-Hanson metric, all of these spaces admit non-toric anti-self-dual deformations, thus yielding many new examples of anti-self-dual ALE spaces. For our second application, we compute the dimension of the deformation space of the canonical Bochner-Kahler metric on any weighted projective space $\mathbb{CP}^2_{(r,q,p)}$ for relatively prime integers $1 < r < q < p$. A corollary of this is that, while these metrics are rigid as Bochner-Kahler metrics, infinitely many of these admit non-trival self-dual deformations, yielding a large class of new examples of self-dual orbifold metrics on certain weighted projective spaces.

A Modification of the Sarkar-Wang Algorithm and an Analysis of its Computational Complexity

The Sarkar-Wang algorithm computes the hat version of the Heegaard Floer homology of a closed oriented three manifold. This paper analyzes the computational complexity of the Sarkar-Wang algorithm; then the algorithm is modified to obtain a better bound. Then the computational complexity of calculating HFK hat from a Heegaard diagram by means of the modified Sarkar-Wang algorithm is also analyzed. Under certain assumptions it is shown that the modified Sarkar-Wang algorithm is faster than the Manolescu-Ozsvath-Sarkar algorithm.
