Logarithmically Regular Morphisms

We consider the stack $\mathcal{L}og_X$ parametrizing log schemes over a log scheme $X$, and weak and strong properties of log morphisms via $\mathcal{L}og_X$, as defined by Olsson. We give a concrete combinatorial presentation of $\mathcal{L}og_X$, and prove a simple criterion of when weak and strong properties of log morphisms coincide. We then apply this result to the study of logarithmic regularity, derive its main properties, and give a chart criterion analogous to Kato's chart criterion of logarithmic smoothness.

Descent for non-archimedean analytic spaces

In this paper we study two types of descent in the category of Berkovich analytic spaces: flat descent and descent with respect to an extension of the ground field. Quite surprisingly, the deepest results in this direction seem to be of the second type, including the descent of properties of being a good analytic space and being a morphism without boundary.

Relative desingularization and principalization of ideals

In characteristic zero, we construct relative principalization of ideals for logarithmically regular morphisms of logarithmic schemes, and use it to construct logarithmically regular desingularization of morphisms. These constructions are relatively canonical and even functorial with respect to logarithmically regular morphisms and arbitrary base changes. Relative canonicity means, that the principalization requires a fine enough non-canonical modification of the base, and once it is chosen the process is canonical. As a consequence we deduce the semistable reduction theorem over arbitrary valuation rings. In another our work in progress, the same problems will be solved canonically in the case of proper morphisms.

Functorial embedded resolution via weighted blowings up

We provide a procedure for resolving, in characteristic 0, singularities of a variety $X$ embedded in a smooth variety $Y$ by repeatedly blowing up the worst singularities, in the sense of stack-theoretic weighted blowings up. No history, no exceptional divisors, and no logarithmic structures are necessary to carry this out; the steps are explicit geometric operations requiring no choices; and the resulting algorithm is efficient. A similar result was discovered independently by McQuillan in a manuscript posted on this archive simultaneously.

Semistable reduction in characteristic 0

In 2000 Abramovich and Karu proved that any dominant morphism $f\:X\to B$ of varieties of characteristic zero can be made weakly semistable by replacing $B$ by a smooth alteration $B'$ and replacing the proper transform of $X$ by a modification $X'$. In the language of log geometry this means that $f'\:X'\to B'$ is log smooth and saturated for appropriate log structures. Moreover, Abramovich and Karu formulated a stronger conjecture that $f'\:X'\to B'$ can be even made semistable, which amounts to making $X'$ smooth as well, and explained why this is the best resolution of $f$ one might hope for. In this paper, we solve the semistable reduction conjecture in the larger generality of finite type morphisms of quasi-excellent schemes of characteristic zero.

Log smoothness and polystability over valuation rings

Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a valuation ring of height one of residual characteristic exponent $p$ and with algebraically closed field of fractions. Our main result provides a best possible resolution of the monoidal structure $M_X$ of a log variety $X$ over $\calO$ with a vertical log structure: there exists a log modification $Y\to X$ such that the monoidal structure of $Y$ is polystable. In particular, if $X$ is log smooth over $\mathcal{O}$, then $Y$ is polystable with a smooth generic fiber. As a corollary we deduce that any variety over $\mathcal{O}$ possesses a polystable alteration of degreee $p^n$. The core of our proof is a subdivision result for polyhedral complexes satisfying certain rationality conditions.

Topological transcendence degree

Throughout the paper, an analytic field means a non-archimedean complete real-valued one, and our main objective is to extend to these fields the basic theory of transcendental extensions. One easily introduces a topological analogue of the transcendence degree, but, surprisingly, it turns out that it may behave very badly. For example, a particular case of a theorem of Matignon-Reversat asserts that if $\mathrm{char}(k)>0$ then $\widehat{k((t))^a}$ possesses non-invertible continuous $k$-endomorphisms, and this implies that the topological transcendence degree is not additive in towers. Nevertheless, we prove that in some aspects the topological transcendence degree behaves reasonably, and we show by explicit counter-examples that our positive results are pretty sharp. Applications to types of points in Berkovich spaces and untilts of $\widehat{\mathbf{F}_p((t))^a}$ are discussed.

Toroidal orbifolds, destackification, and Kummer blowings up

We show that any toroidal DM stack $X$ with finite diagonalizable inertia possesses a maximal toroidal coarsening $X_{tcs}$ such that the morphism $X\to X_{tcs}$ is logarithmically smooth. Further, we use torification results of [AT17] to construct a destackification functor, a variant of the main result of Bergh [Ber17], on the category of such toroidal stacks $X$. Namely, we associate to $X$ a sequence of blowings up of toroidal stacks $\widetilde{\mathcal{F}}_X\:Y\longrightarrow X$ such that $Y_{tc}$ coincides with the usual coarse moduli space $Y_{cs}$. In particular, this provides a toroidal resolution of the algebraic space $X_{cs}$. Both $X_{tcs}$ and $\widetilde{\mathcal{F}}_X$ are functorial with respect to strict inertia preserving morphisms $X'\to X$. Finally, we use coarsening morphisms to introduce a class of non-representable birational modifications of toroidal stacks called Kummer blowings up. These modifications, as well as our version of destackification, are used in our work on functorial toroidal resolution of singularities.

Principalization of ideals on toroidal orbifolds

Given an ideal $\mathcal I$ on a variety $X$ with toroidal singularities, we produce a modification $X' \to X$, functorial for toroidal morphisms, making the ideal monomial on a toroidal stack $X'$. We do this by adapting the methods of [Wło05], discarding steps which become redundant. We deduce functorial resolution of singularities for varieties with logarithmic structures. This is the first step in our program to apply logarithmic desingularization to a morphism $Z \to B$, aiming to prove functorial semistable reduction theorems.

Endomorphisms of power series fields and residue fields of Fargues-Fontaine curves

We show that for k a perfect field of characteristic p, there exist endomorphisms of the completed algebraic closure of k((t)) which are not bijective. As a corollary, we resolve a question of Fargues and Fontaine by showing that for p a prime and C_p a completed algebraic closure of Q_p, there exist closed points of the Fargues-Fontaine curve associated to C_p whose residue fields are not (even abstractly) isomorphic to C_p as topological fields.

Metric uniformization of morphisms of Berkovich curves

We show that the metric structure of morphisms $f\colon Y\to X$ between quasi-smooth compact Berkovich curves over an algebraically closed field admits a finite combinatorial description. In particular, for a large enough skeleton $Γ=(Γ_Y,Γ_X)$ of $f$, the sets $N_{f,\ge n}$ of points of $Y$ of multiplicity at least $n$ in the fiber are radial around $Γ_Y$ with the radius changing piecewise monomially along $Γ_Y$. In this case, for any interval $l=[z,y]\subset Y$ connecting a rigid point $z$ to the skeleton, the restriction $f|_l$ gives rise to a $profile$ piecewise monomial function $φ_y\colon [0,1]\to[0,1]$ that depends only on the type 2 point $y\inΓ_Y$. In particular, the metric structure of $f$ is determined by $Γ$ and the family of the profile functions $\{φ_y\}$ with $y\inΓ_Y^{(2)}$. We prove that this family is piecewise monomial in $y$ and naturally extends to the whole $Y^{\mathrm{hyp}}$. In addition, we extend the theory of higher ramification groups to arbitrary real-valued fields and show that $φ_y$ coincides with the Herbrand's function of $\mathcal{H}(y)/\mathcal{H}(f(y))$. This gives a curious geometric interpretation of the Herbrand's function, which applies also to non-normal and even inseparable extensions.

Functorial desingularization over Q: boundaries and the embedded case

Our main result establishes functorial desingularization of noetherian quasi-excellent schemes over $\bfQ$ with ordered boundaries. A functorial embedded desingularization of quasi-excellent schemes of characteristic zero is deduced. Furthermore, a standard simple argument extends these results to other categories, including in particular, (equivariant) embedded desingularization of the following objects of characteristic zero: qe algebraic stacks, qe schemes, qe formal schemes, complex and non-archimedean analytic spaces. We also obtain a semistable reduction theorem for formal schemes.

Tame distillation and desingularization by $p$-alterations

We strengthen Gabber's $l'$-alteration theorem by avoiding all primes invertible on a scheme. In particular, we prove that any scheme $X$ of finite type over a quasi-excellent threefold can be desingularized by a $\mathrm{char}(X)$-alteration, i.e. an alteration whose order is only divisible by primes non-invertible on $X$. The main new ingredient in the proof is a tame distillation theorem asserting that, after enlarging, any alteration of $X$ can be split into a composition of a tame Galois alteration and a $\mathrm{char}(X)$-alteration. The proof of the distillation theorem is based on the following tameness theorem that we deduce from a theorem of M. Pank: if a valued field of residue characteristic $p$ has no non-trivial $p$-extensions then any its algebraic extension is tame.

Wild coverings of Berkovich curves

This paper is an extended version of the author's talk given at the conference "Non-Archimedean analytic geometry: theory and practice" held in August 2015 at Papeete. It gives a brief overview of recent results on the structure of wild coverings of Berkovich curves and its relation to the different and higher ramification theory.

Altered local uniformization of Berkovich spaces

We prove that for any compact quasi-smooth strictly $k$-analytic space $X$ there exist a finite extension $l/k$ and a quasi-étale covering $X'\to X\otimes_kl$ such that $X'$ possesses a strictly semistable formal model. This extends a theorem of U. Hartl to the case of the ground field with a non-discrete valuation.

Morphisms of Berkovich curves and the different function

Given a generically étale morphism $f\colon Y\to X$ of quasi-smooth Berkovich curves, we define a different function $δ_f\colon Y\to[0,1]$ that measures the wildness of the topological ramification locus of $f$. This provides a new invariant for studying $f$, which cannot be obtained by the usual reduction techniques. We prove that $δ_f$ is a piecewise monomial function satisfying a balancing condition at type 2 points analogous to the classical Riemann-Hurwitz formula, and show that $δ_f$ can be used to explicitly construct the simultaneous skeletons of $X$ and $Y$. As an application, we use our results to completely describe the topological ramification locus of $f$ when its degree equals to the residue characteristic $p$.

Torification of diagonalizable group actions on toroidal schemes

We study actions of diagonalizable groups on toroidal schemes (i.e. logarithmically regular logarithmic schemes). In particular, we show that for so-called toroidal actions the quotient is again a toroidal scheme. Our main result constructs for an arbitrary action a canonical torification - making the action toridal after an equivariant blowings up. This extends earlier results of Abramovich-de Jong, Abramovich-Karu-Matsuki-Włodarczyk, and Gabber in various aspects.

Functorial factorization of birational maps for qe schemes in characteristic 0

We prove functorial weak factorization of projective birational morphisms of regular quasi-excellent schemes in characteristic 0 broadly based on the existing line of proof for varieties. From this general functorial statement we deduce factorization results for algebraic stacks, formal schemes, complex analytic germs, Berkovich analytic and rigid analytic spaces.
