Complete Intersections with S^1-action

We give the diffeomorphism classification of complete intersections with S^1-symmetry in dimension less than or equal to 6. In particular, we show that a 6-dimensional complete intersection admits a smooth non-trivial S^1-action if and only if it is diffeomorphic to the complex projective space or the quadric. We also prove that in any odd complex dimension only finitely many complete intersections can carry a smooth effective action by a torus of rank $>1$.

A note on torus actions and the Witten genus

We show that the Witten genus of a string manifold $M$ vanishes, if there is an effective action of a torus $T$ on $M$ such that $\dim T>b_2(M)$. We apply this result to study group actions on $M\times G/T$, where $G$ is a compact connected Lie group and $T$ a maximal torus of $G$. Moreover, we use the methods which are needed to prove these results to the study of torus manifolds. We show that up to diffeomorphism there are only finitely many quasitoric manifolds $M$ with the same cohomology ring as $#_{i=1}^k \pm\mathbb{C} P^n$ with $k<n$.

Torus orbifolds, slice-maximal torus actions and rational ellipticity

In this work, it is shown that a simply-connected, rationally-elliptic torus orbifold is equivariantly rationally homotopy equivalent to the quotient of a product of spheres by an almost-free, linear torus action, where this torus has rank equal to the number of odd-dimensional spherical factors in the product. As an application, simply-connected, rationally-elliptic manifolds admitting slice-maximal torus actions are classified up to equivariant rational homotopy. The case where the rational-ellipticity hypothesis is replaced by non-negative curvature is also discussed, and the Bott Conjecture in the presence of a slice-maximal torus action is proved.

Equivariantly homeomorphic quasitoric manifolds are diffeomorphic

In this note we prove that equivariantly homeomorphic quasitoric manifolds are diffeomorphic. As a consequence we show that up to finite ambiguity the diffeomorphism type of certain quasitoric manifolds $M$ is determined by their cohomology rings and first Pontrjagin classes.

Torus manifolds and non-negative curvature

A torus manifold $M$ is a $2n$-dimensional orientable manifold with an effective action of an $n$-dimensional torus such that $M^T\neq \emptyset$. In this paper we discuss the classification of torus manifolds which admit an invariant metric of non-negative curvature. If $M$ is a simply connected torus manifold which admits such a metric, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a quotient of a free linear torus action on a product of spheres. We also classify rationally elliptic torus manifolds $M$ with $H^{\text{odd}}(M;\mathbb{Z})=0$ up homeomorphism.

Circle actions and scalar curvature

We construct metrics of positive scalar curvature on manifolds with circle actions. One of our main results is that there exist $S^1$-invariant metrics of positive scalar curvature on every $S^1$-manifold which has a fixed point component of codimension 2. As a consequence we can prove that there are non-invariant metrics of positive scalar curvature on many manifolds with circle actions. Results from equivariant bordism allow us to show that there is an invariant metric of positive scalar curvature on the connected sum of two copies of a simply connected semi-free $S^1$-manifold $M$ of dimension at least six provided that $M$ is not $\text{spin}$ or that $M$ is $\text{spin}$ and the $S^1$-action is of odd type. If $M$ is spin and the $S^1$-action of even type then there is a $k>0$ such that the equivariant connected sum of $2^k$ copies of $M$ admits an invariant metric of positive scalar curvature if and only if a generalized $\hat{A}$-genus of $M/S^1$ vanishes.

Positively curved GKM-manifolds

Let T be a torus of dimension at least k and M a T-manifold. M is a GKM_k-manifold if the action is equivariantly formal, has only isolated fixed points, and any k weights of the isotropy representation in the fixed points are linearly independent. In this paper we compute the cohomology rings with real and integer coefficients of GKM_3- and GKM_4-manifolds which admit invariant metrics of positive sectional curvature.

Non-abelian symmetries of quasitoric manifolds

A quasitoric manifold $M$ is a $2n$-dimensional manifold which admits an action of an $n$-dimensional torus which has some nice properties. We determine the isomorphism type of a maximal compact connected Lie-subgroup $G$ of $\text{Homeo}(M)$ which contains the torus. Moreover, we show that this group is unique up to conjugation.

Dirac-operators and symmetries of quasitoric manifolds

We establish a vanishing result for indices of certain twisted Dirac operators on $\text{Spin}^c$-manifolds with non-abelian Lie-group actions. We apply this result to study non-abelian symmetries of quasitoric manifolds. We give upper bounds for the degree of symmetry of these manifolds.

Exotic torus manifolds and equivariant smooth structures on quasitoric manifolds

In 2006 Masuda and Suh asked if two compact non-singular toric varieties having isomorphic cohomology rings are homeomorphic. In the first part of this paper we discuss this question for topological generalizations of toric varieties, so-called torus manifolds. For example we show that there are homotopy equivalent torus manifolds which are not homeomorphic. Moreover, we characterize those groups which appear as the fundamental groups of locally standard torus manifolds. In the second part we give a classification of quasitoric manifolds and certain six-dimensional torus manifolds up to equivariant diffeomorphism. In the third part we enumerate the number of conjugacy classes of tori in the diffeomorphism group of torus manifolds. For torus manifolds of dimension greater than six there are always infinitely many conjugacy classes. We give examples which show that this does not hold for six-dimensional torus manifolds.

Quasitoric manifolds homeomorphic to homogeneous spaces

We present some classification results for quasitoric manifolds (M) with (p_1(M)=-\sum a_i^2) for some (a_i\in H^2(M)) which admit an action of a compact connected Lie-group (G) such that (\dim M/G \leq 1). In contrast to Kuroki's work we do not require that the action of (G) extends the torus action on (M).

Torus manifolds with non-abelian symmetries

Let (G) be a connected compact non-abelian Lie-group and (T) a maximal torus of (G). A torus manifold with (G)-action is defined to be a smooth connected closed oriented manifold of dimension (2\dim T) with an almost effective action of (G) such that (M^T\neq \emptyset). We show that if there is a torus manifold (M) with (G)-action then the action of a finite covering group of (G) factors through (\tilde{G}=\prod SU(l_i+1)\times\prod SO(2l_i+1)\times \prod SO(2l_i)\times T^{l_0}). The action of (\tilde{G}) on (M) restricts to an action of (\tilde{G}'=\prod SU(l_i+1)\times\prod SO(2l_i+1)\times \prod U(l_i)\times T^{l_0}) which has the same orbits as the (\tilde{G})-action. We define invariants of torus manifolds with (G)-action which determine their (\tilde{G}')-equivariant diffeomorphism type. We call these invariants admissible 5-tuples. A simply connected torus manifold with (G)-action is determined by its admissible 5-tuple up to (\tilde{G})-equivariant diffeomorphism. Furthermore we prove that all admissible 5-tuples may be realised by torus manifolds with (\tilde{G}")-action where (\tilde{G}") is a finite covering group of (\tilde{G}').
