Density effects in precision laser spectroscopy of exotic helium atoms

Exotic helium atoms act as unique atomic traps for heavy, negatively charged particles, protecting them from nuclear annihilation and nuclear capture on timescales long enough to enable high-precision laser spectroscopy. Such measurements serve as stringent tests of three-body quantum electrodynamics and offer a direct route to determining fundamental particle masses. Motivated by upcoming spectroscopic efforts targeting pionic ($π^{-\,4}\mathrm{He}^+$) and kaonic ($K^{-\,4}\mathrm{He}^+$) helium, we present a rigorous theoretical evaluation of the collisional and density effects governing these systems. Using an ab initio potential energy surface and coupled-channel quantum scattering calculations, we study the collisional stability of the candidate metastable states against inelastic quenching in a cryogenic helium buffer gas. Furthermore, we provide theoretical reference values for the pressure broadening and pressure shift coefficients of the targeted transitions. These results establish an essential benchmark for future experiments, paving the way for refined determinations of the pion and kaon masses.

Quantum calculation of the collision-induced line-shape effects in antiprotonic helium and the new accurate ab initio $\bar{p}$He$^{+}$-He potential energy surface

We present the first fully ab initio calculations of collision-induced broadening and shift of spectral lines in antiprotonic helium ($\bar{p}$He$^{+}$) perturbed by atomic helium. To overcome critical limitations of previous studies, we construct a new highly accurate potential energy surface (PES) that spans a wide range of $\bar{p}$He$^{+}$-He geometries relevant to all metastable states of the exotic helium atom. Rigorous quantum scattering calculations performed using the new PES yield scattering $S$-matrices from which we extract pressure broadening and shift coefficients for 50 transitions in antiprotonic helium-4 ($\bar{p}^{4}$He$^{+}$). This dataset provides the first rigorous benchmark for earlier semiclassical calculations and establishes a robust theoretical reference for high-precision spectroscopy of antiprotonic helium, which is used to test the fundamental charge, parity, and time reversal (CPT) symmetry. The results extend to temperatures relevant to non-gaseous phases of helium, supporting a new class of precision measurements. This study introduces a methodological framework for future investigations of other exotic systems, such as pionic or kaonic helium atoms, enabling the development of reference data for high-precision spectroscopy of these species - an essential component for improving the determination of the pion and kaon masses.

Electromagnetic Waves in Cosmological Space-Time II. Luminosity Distance

In this article, we continue our investigation on how the electromagnetic waves propagate in the Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker spacetime. Unlike the standard approach, which relies on null geodesics and geometric optics approximation, we derive explicit solutions for electromagnetic waves in expanding spacetime and examine their implications for cosmological observations. In particular, our analysis reveals potential modifications to the standard luminosity distance formula. Its effect on other cosmological parameters, e.g., the amount of cold dust matter in the Universe, is considered and estimated from Type Ia supernovae data. We see that this alternative model is able to fit the supernova data, but it gives a qualitatively different Universe without a cosmological constant but with stiff or ultra-stiff matter.

Cosmological Solutions from a Multi-Measure Model with Inflaton Field

In a recent work, we demonstrated that a modified gravity model in which a scalar "darkon" field is coupled to both the standard Riemannian metric and to another non-Riemannian volume form is compatible with observational data from Supernovae Type Ia. Here, we investigate a more complicated model with an additional "inflaton" scalar field. We demonstrate numerically that the model can qualitatively reproduce the Universe inflation epoch, matter dominated epoch, and present accelerating expansion in a seamless way. We show that such solutions occur only when the model parameters are within a very particular range. The main numerical problem we are faced with is reproducing the extremely small time of the inflation epoch. Here, we present how the variation of some parameters affects this time.

Cosmology from multimeasure multifield model

We consider the cosmological application of a (variant of) relatively newly proposed model \cite{1609.06915} unifying inflation, dark energy, dark matter, and the Higgs mechanism. The model was originally defined using additional non-Riemannian measures but it can be reformulated into effective quintessential model unifying inflation, dark energy and dark matter. Here we demonstrate numerically that it is capable of describing the entire Universe evolution in a seamless way, but this requires some revision of the model setup. The main reason is that there is a strong effective friction in the model, a feature which has been neglected in the pioneer work. This improves the model potential for proper description of the Universe evolution, because the friction ensures a finite time inflation with dynamically maintained low-value slow-roll parameters in the realistic scenarios. In addition, the model predicts the existence of a constant scalar field in late Universe.

Cosmological solutions from models with unified dark energy and dark matter and with inflaton field

Recently, few cosmological models with additional non-Riemannian volume form(s) have been proposed. In this article we use Supernovae type Ia experimental data to test one of these models which provides a unified description of both dark energy via dynamically generated cosmological constant and dark matter as a "dust" fluid due to a hidden nonlinear Noether symmetry. It turns out that the model allows various scenarios of the future Universe evolution and in the same time perfectly fits contemporary observational data. Further, we investigate the influence of an additional inflaton field with a step like potential. With its help we can reproduce the Universe inflation epoch, matter dominated epoch and present accelerating expansion in a seamless way. Interesting feature is that inflaton undergoes a finite change during its evolution. It can be speculated that the inflaton asymptotic value is connected to the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field.

First FAMU observation of muon transfer from mu-p atoms to higher-Z elements

The FAMU experiment aims to accurately measure the hyperfine splitting of the ground state of the muonic hydrogen atom. A measurement of the transfer rate of muons from hydrogen to heavier gases is necessary for this purpose. In June 2014, within a preliminary experiment, a pressurized gas-target was exposed to the pulsed low-energy muon beam at the RIKEN RAL muon facility (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK). The main goal of the test was the characterization of both the noise induced by the pulsed beam and the X-ray detectors. The apparatus, to some extent rudimental, has served admirably to this task. Technical results have been published that prove the validity of the choices made and pave the way for the next steps. This paper presents the results of physical relevance of measurements of the muon transfer rate to carbon dioxide, oxygen, and argon from non-thermalized excited mu-p atoms. The analysis methodology and the approach to the systematics errors are useful for the subsequent study of the transfer rate as function of the kinetic energy of the mu-p currently under way.

Tests for the extraction of Boer-Mulders functions

At present, the Boer-Mulders (BM) functions are extracted from asymmetry data using the simplifying assumption of their proportionality to the Sivers functions for each quark flavour. Here we present two independent tests for this assumption. We subject COMPASS data on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering on the $\langle\cosϕ_h\rangle$, $\langle\cos 2ϕ_h\rangle$ and Sivers asymmetries to these tests. Our analysis shows that the tests are satisfied with the available data if the proportionality constant is the same for all quark flavours, which does not correspond to the flavour dependence used in existing analyses. This suggests that the published information on the BM functions may be unreliable. The $\langle\cosϕ_h\rangle$ and $\langle\cos 2 ϕ_h\rangle$ asymmetries receive contributions also from the, in principle, calculable Cahn effect. We succeed in extracting the Cahn contributions from experiment (we believe for the first time) and compare with their calculated values, with interesting implications.

Einstein-Rosen "Bridge" Revisited and Lightlike Thin-Shell Wormholes

We study in some detail the properties of the mathematically correct formulation of the classical Einstein-Rosen "bridge" as proposed in the original 1935 paper, which was shown in a series of previous papers of ours to represent the simplest example of a static spherically symmetric traversable lightlike thin-shell wormhole. Thus, the original Einstein-Rosen "bridge" is not equivalent to the concept of the dynamical and non-traversable Schwarzschild wormhole, also called "Einstein-Rosen bridge" in modern textbooks on general relativity. The original Einstein-Rosen "bridge" requires the presence of a special kind of "exotic" matter source located on its throat which was shown to be the simplest member of the previously introduced by us class of lightlike membranes. We introduce and exploit the Kruskal-Penrose description of the original Einstein-Rosen "bridge". In particular, we explicitly construct closed timelike geodesics on the pertinent Kruskal-Penrose manifold.

Cosmological aspects of a unified dark energy and dust dark matter model

Recently, a model of modified gravity plus single scalar field model was proposed, in which the scalar couples both to the standard Riemannian volume form given by the square root of the determinant of the Riemannian metric, as well as to another non-Riemannian volume form given in terms of an auxiliary maximal rank antisymmetric tensor gauge field. This model provides an exact unified description of both dark energy (via dynamically generated cosmological constant) and dark matter (as a "dust" fluid due to a hidden nonlinear Noether symmetry). In this paper we test the model against Supernovae type Ia experimental data and investigate the future Universe evolution which follows from it. Our results show that this model has very interesting features allowing various scenarios of Universe evolution and in the same time perfectly fits contemporary observational data. It can describe exponentially expanding or finite expanding Universe and moreover, a Universe with phase transition of first kind. The phase transition occurs to a new, emerging at some time ground state with lower energy density, which affects significantly the Universe evolution.

Kruskal-Penrose Formalism for Lightlike Thin-Shell Wormholes

The original formulation of the "Einstein-Rosen bridge" in the classic paper of Einstein and Rosen (1935) is historically the first example of a static spherically-symmetric wormhole solution. It is not equivalent to the concept of the dynamical and non-traversable Schwarzschild wormhole, also called "Einstein-Rosen bridge" in modern textbooks on general relativity. In previous papers of ours we have provided a mathematically correct treatment of the original "Einstein-Rosen bridge" as a traversable wormhole by showing that it requires the presence of a special kind of "exotic matter" located on the wormhole throat - a lightlike brane (the latter was overlooked in the original 1935 paper). In the present note we continue our thorough study of the original "Einstein-Rosen bridge" as a simplest example of a lightlike thin-shell wormhole by explicitly deriving its description in terms of the Kruskal-Penrose formalism for maximal analytic extension of the underlying wormhole spacetime manifold. Further, we generalize the Kruskal-Penrose description to the case of more complicated lightlike thin-shell wormholes with two throats exhibiting a remarkable property of QCD-like charge confinement.

Fermions as U(1) instantons

Anomalous quantization of the Electromagnetic field allows non-trivial (anti) self-dual configurations to exist in four-dimensional Euclidian space-time. These instanton-like objects are described as massless spinor particles.

Note on the structure of constraint algebras

It is shown that when the gauge algebra is with root system the canonical Hamiltonian commutes with the constraints. Two other simple propositions concerning gauge fixing are proved too.
