Tx-Rx Mode Mismatch Effects in Gaussian-Modulated CV QKD

The impact of technical limitations on pulse shaping used to generate a CV QKD signal is quantified in terms of the attainable secure key rate. Optimization of key spectral efficiency for Gaussian-modulated CV QKD with truncated and discretized root-raised cosine profiles is discussed.

Optimization of intensity-modulation/direct-detection optical key distribution under passive eavesdropping

We analyze theoretically optimal operation of an optical key distribution (OKD) link based on fine intensity modulation of an optical signal transmitted over an attenuating channel to a direct detection receiver. With suitable digital postprocessing, the users may generate a secret key that will be unknown to an unauthorized party collecting passively a fraction of the signal that escapes detection by the legitimate recipient. The security is ensured by the presence of the shot noise that inevitably accompanies eavesdropper's attempt to detect the collected signal. It is shown that the key amount depends on a ratio that compares legitimate recipient's and eavesdropper's capabilities to detect the signal, including noise contributed by their respective detectors. A simple proportionality relation is derived in the strong eavesdropping regime and closed expressions for the optimal depth of binary intensity modulation as well as the discrimination thresholds for hard-decoded direct detection are given. The presented results substantially simplify design of practical OKD systems operating under changing external conditions, e.g. variable atmospheric absorption in the case of free-space optical links.

Bandwidth manipulation of quantum light by an electro-optic time lens

The ability to manipulate the spectral-temporal waveform of optical pulses has enabled a wide range of applications from ultrafast spectroscopy to high-speed communications. Extending these concepts to quantum light has the potential to enable breakthroughs in optical quantum science and technology. However, filtering and amplifying often employed in classical pulse shaping techniques are incompatible with non-classical light. Controlling the pulsed mode structure of quantum light requires efficient means to achieve deterministic, unitary manipulation that preserves fragile quantum coherences. Here we demonstrate an electro-optic method for modifying the spectrum of non-classical light by employing a time lens. In particular we show highly-efficient wavelength-preserving six-fold compression of single-photon spectral intensity bandwidth, enabling over a two-fold increase of single-photon flux into a spectrally narrowband absorber. These results pave the way towards spectral-temporal photonic quantum information processing and facilitate interfacing of different physical platforms where quantum information can be stored or manipulated.

Bright Integrated Photon-Pair Source for Practical Passive Decoy-State Quantum Key Distribution

We report on a bright, nondegenerate type-I parametric down-conversion source, which is well suited for passive decoy-state quantum key distribution. We show the photon-number-resolved analysis over a broad range of pump powers and we prove heralded higher-order $n$-photon states up to $n=4$. The inferred photon click statistics exhibit excellent agreements to the theoretical predictions. From our measurement results we conclude that our source meets the requirements to avert photon-number-splitting attacks.
