A note on spectral gap and weighted Poincaré inequalities for some one-dimensional diffusions

We present some classical and weighted Poincaré inequalities for some one-dimensional probability measures. This work is the one-dimensional counterpart of a recent study achieved by the authors for a class of spherically symmetric probability measures in dimension larger than 2. Our strategy is based on two main ingredients: on the one hand, the optimal constant in the desired weighted Poincaré inequality has to be rewritten as the spectral gap of a convenient Markovian diffusion operator, and on the other hand we use a recent result given by the two first authors, which allows to estimate precisely this spectral gap. In particular we are able to capture its exact value for some examples.

Volume and distance comparison theorems for sub-Riemannian manifolds

In this paper we study global distance estimates and uniform local volume estimates in a large class of sub-Riemannian manifolds. Our main device is the generalized curvature dimension inequality introduced by the first and the third author in \cite{BG1} and its use to obtain sharp inequalities for solutions of the sub-Riemannian heat equation. As a consequence, we obtain a Gromov type precompactness theorem for the class of sub-Riemannian manifolds whose generalized Ricci curvature is bounded from below in the sense of \cite{BG1}.

A sub-Riemannian curvature-dimension inequality, volume doubling property and the Poincaré inequality

Let $\mathbb{M}$ be a smooth connected manifold endowed with a smooth measure $μ$ and a smooth locally subelliptic diffusion operator $L$ satisfying $L1=0$, and which is symmetric with respect to $μ$. We show that if $L$ satisfies, with a non negative curvature parameter, the generalized curvature inequality introduced by the first and third named authors in \cite{BG}, then the following properties hold: 1 The volume doubling property; 2 The Poincaré inequality; 3 The parabolic Harnack inequality. The key ingredient is the study of dimensional reverse log-Sobolev inequalities for the heat semigroup and corresponding non-linear reverse Harnack type inequalities. Our results apply in particular to all Sasakian manifolds whose horizontal Webster-Tanaka-Ricci curvature is non negative, all Carnot groups with step two, and to wide subclasses of principal bundles over Riemannian manifolds whose Ricci curvature is non negative.

Essential spectrum and Weyl asymptotics for discrete Laplacians

In this paper, we investigate spectral properties of discrete Laplacians. Our study is based on the Hardy inequality and the use of super-harmonic functions. We recover and improve lower bounds for the bottom of the spectrum and of the essential spectrum. In some situation, we obtain Weyl asymptotics for the eigenvalues. We also provide a probabilistic representation of super-harmonic functions. Using coupling arguments, we set comparison results for the bottom of the spectrum, the bottom of the essential spectrum and the stochastic completeness of different discrete Laplacians. The class of weakly spherically symmetric graphs is also studied in full detail.

Spectral gap for spherically symmetric log-concave probability measures, and beyond

Let $μ$ be a probability measure on $\rr^n$ ($n \geq 2$) with Lebesgue density proportional to $e^{-V (\Vert x\Vert )}$, where $V : \rr_+ \to \rr$ is a smooth convex potential. We show that the associated spectral gap in $L^2 (μ)$ lies between $(n-1) / \int_{\rr^n} \Vert x\Vert ^2 μ(dx)$ and $n / \int_{\rr^n} \Vert x\Vert ^2 μ(dx)$, improving a well-known two-sided estimate due to Bobkov. Our Markovian approach is remarkably simple and is sufficiently robust to be extended beyond the log-concave case, at the price of potentially modifying the underlying dynamics in the energy, leading to weighted Poincaré inequalities. All our results are illustrated by some classical and less classical examples.

Eigenvalue asymptotics for Schrödinger operators on sparse graphs

We consider Schrödinger operators on sparse graphs. The geometric definition of sparseness turn out to be equivalent to a functional inequality for the Laplacian. In consequence, sparseness has in turn strong spectral and functional analytic consequences. Specifically, one consequence is that it allows to completely describe the form domain. Moreover, as another consequence it leads to a characterization for discreteness of the spectrum. In this case we determine the first order of the corresponding eigenvalue asymptotics.

Intertwining relations for one-dimensional diffusions and application to functional inequalities

Following the recent work [13] fulfilled in the discrete case, we pro- vide in this paper new intertwining relations for semigroups of one-dimensional diffusions. Various applications of these results are investigated, among them the famous variational formula of the spectral gap derived by Chen and Wang [15] together with a new criterion ensuring that the logarithmic Sobolev inequality holds. We complete this work by revisiting some classical examples, for which new estimates on the optimal constants are derived.

Log-Sobolev inequalities for subelliptic operators satisfying a generalized curvature dimension inequality

Let $\M$ be a smooth connected manifold endowed with a smooth measure $μ$ and a smooth locally subelliptic diffusion operator $L$ which is symmetric with respect to $μ$. We assume that $L$ satisfies a generalized curvature dimension inequality as introduced by Baudoin-Garofalo \cite{BG1}. Our goal is to discuss functional inequalities for $μ$ like the Poincaré inequality, the log-Sobolev inequality or the Gaussian logarithmic isoperimetric inequality.

Sub-Riemannian balls in CR Sasakian manifolds

We prove global estimates for the sub-Riemannian distance of CR Sasakian manifolds with non negative horizontal Webster-Tanaka Ricci curvature. In particular, in this setting, large sub-Riemannian balls are comparable to Riemannian balls.

The subelliptic heat kernels on SL(2,R) and on its universal covering $\widetilde{SL(2,R)}$: integral representations and some functional inequalities

In this paper, we study a subelliptic heat kernel on the Lie group SL(2,R) and on its universal covering. The subelliptic structure on SL(2,R) comes from the fibration $SO(2) -> SL(2,R) -> H^2$ and it can be lifted to its universal covering. First, we derive an integral representation for these heat kernels. These expressions allow us to obtain some asymptotics in small time of the heat kernels and give us a way to compute the subriemannian distances. Then, we establish some gradient estimates and some functional inequalities like a Li-Yau type estimate and a reverse Poincaré inequality that are valid for both heat kernels.

On gradient bounds for the heat kernel on the Heisenberg group

It is known that the couple formed by the two dimensional Brownian motion and its Lévy area leads to the heat kernel on the Heisenberg group, which is one of the simplest sub-Riemannian space. The associated diffusion operator is hypoelliptic but not elliptic, which makes difficult the derivation of functional inequalities for the heat kernel. However, Driver and Melcher and more recently H.-Q. Li have obtained useful gradient bounds for the heat kernel on the Heisenberg group. We provide in this paper simple proofs of these bounds, and explore their consequences in terms of functional inequalities, including Cheeger and Bobkov type isoperimetric inequalities for the heat kernel.

A discrete version and stability of Brunn Minkowski inequality

In the first part of the paper, we define an approximated Brunn-Minkowski inequality which generalizes the classical one for length spaces. Our new definition based only on distance properties allows us also to deal with discrete spaces. Then we show the stability of our new inequality under a convergence of metric measure spaces. This result gives as a corollary the stability of the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality for geodesic spaces. The proof of this stability was done for different inequalities (curvature dimension inequality, metric contraction property) but as far as we know not for the Brunn-Minkowski one. In the second part of the paper, we show that every metric measure space satisfying classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality can be approximated by discrete spaces with some approximated Brunn-Minkowski inequalities.
