Track fitting at the full LHC collision rate

The LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider underwent a major upgrade before the LHC Run 3 data taking period, employing an all-software approach in its trigger system. Here we present a fast implementation of a Kalman filter, used in the first trigger stage since the 2025 data taking period, allowing to determine parameter estimates of charged-particle trajectories at the full LHCb collision frequency of 30 MHz. This approach replaces computationally expensive magnetic field map lookups and numerical integration methods with fast analytical parameterisations while maintaining the mathematical framework of Kalman filtering. Implemented on approximately 500 GPUs within the first-level trigger, the algorithm has replaced the previous partial track fitting algorithm in the real-time trigger environment at the cost of a 2% increase in processing time. Compared to the previous fitter this parameterised Kalman filter shows a significantly improved momentum resolution, resulting in a factor of two improvement in the invariant mass resolutions for reconstructed D0 and J/ψ hadrons. It additionally demonstrates greater robustness against detector misalignment effects and substantially sharpens the discrimination between genuine particle trajectories and accidental background, more than doubling the rejection of the latter at no cost to genuine-track efficiency, for a standard selection working point.

Inclusive semileptonic $B_{s}^{0}$ meson decays at the LHC via a sum-of-exclusive modes technique: possibilities and prospects

We propose an approach for measuring the moments of the hadronic invariant mass distribution in semileptonic $B_{s}^{0}$ meson decays using a sum-of-exclusive technique. Using the present and foreseen knowledge about exclusive semileptonic $B_{s}^{0}$ decays, we estimate the uncertainties on moments of the kinematic distribution. Semileptonic $B_{s}^{0}$ decays can be described, as their $B^{0}$ counterpart, using the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE), with the only difference between the $B_{s}^{0}$ and $B^{0}$ mesons being the $SU(3)_F$ breaking effects that change the numerical values of the non-perturbative HQE parameters. We extract the HQE parameters for the $B_{s}^{0}$ decays from our estimates of the moments, showing the potential of the proposed method. We identify a set of required measurements for a future precision measurement.

Fast and flexible data structures for the LHCb Run 3 software trigger

Starting in 2022, the upgraded LHCb detector will collect data with a pure software trigger. In its first stage, reducing the rate from 30MHz to about 1MHz, GPUs are used to reconstruct and trigger on B and D meson topologies and high-pT objects in the event. In its second stage, a CPU farm is used to reconstruct the full event and perform candidate selections, which are persisted for offline use with an output rate of about 10 GB/s. Fast data processing, flexible and custom-designed data structures tailored for SIMD architectures and efficient storage of the intermediate data at various steps of the processing pipeline onto persistent media, e.g. tapes is essential to guarantee the full physics program of LHCb. In this talk, we will present the event model and data persistency developments for the trigger of LHCb in Run 3. Particular emphasize will be given to the novel software-design aspects with respect to the Run 1+2 data taking, the performance improvements which can be achieved and the experience of restructuring a major part of the reconstruction software in a large HEP experiment.

A parametrized Kalman filter for fast track fitting at LHCb

We present an alternative implementation of the Kalman filter employed for track fitting within the LHCb experiment. It uses simple parametrizations for the extrapolation of particle trajectories in the field of the LHCb dipole magnet and for the effects of multiple scattering in the detector material. A speedup of more than a factor of four is achieved while maintaining the quality of the estimated track quantities. This Kalman filter implementation could be used in the purely software-based trigger of the LHCb upgrade.

Rare B, D and K decays, radiative and electroweak penguin decays, including constraints on $V_{td}/V_{ts}$ and $ε'/ε$: Summary of CKM 2018 working group 3

Rare $B$, $D$ and $K$ decays provide interesting probes of the Standard Model (SM), with a potential sensitivity to New Physics (NP) higher than other, more common, decays. Their experimental measurement is challenging, and their theoretical interpretation requires a precise knowledge of QCD at low energies, in the non-perturbative (hadronic) regime. The various $b$, $c$, $s$ decays provide different types of tests of the Standard Model, which can be performed in different experimental settings and which may exhibit correlated deviations in models of New Physics.

A Roadmap for HEP Software and Computing R&D for the 2020s

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.

HEP Community White Paper on Software trigger and event reconstruction

Realizing the physics programs of the planned and upgraded high-energy physics (HEP) experiments over the next 10 years will require the HEP community to address a number of challenges in the area of software and computing. For this reason, the HEP software community has engaged in a planning process over the past two years, with the objective of identifying and prioritizing the research and development required to enable the next generation of HEP detectors to fulfill their full physics potential. The aim is to produce a Community White Paper which will describe the community strategy and a roadmap for software and computing research and development in HEP for the 2020s. The topics of event reconstruction and software triggers were considered by a joint working group and are summarized together in this document.

Physics with electroweak penguins at LHCb

Flavour changing neutral currents are only allowed via loop diagrams in the Standard Model (SM). Electroweak penguin processes are therefore sensitive probes for new physics, as physics beyond the Standard Model can enter via virtual particles at the same level as SM physics. The LHCb detector at the LHC with its forward geometry is ideally suited for the analysis of electroweak penguin processes in $B$ meson decays. All analyses are performed with 1 fb$^{-1}$ of collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV in 2011 and constrain new physics models.
