Approximate and exact controllability of the continuity equation with a localized vector field

We study the controllability of a Partial Differential Equation of transport type, that arises in crowd models. We are interested in controlling it with a control being a vector field, representing a perturbation of the velocity, localized on a fixed control set. We prove that, for each initial and final configuration, one can steer approximately one to another with Lipschitz controls when the uncontrolled dynamics allows to cross the control set. We also show that the exact controllability only holds for controls with less regularity, for which one may lose uniqueness of the associated solution.

Positive and negative results on the internal controllability of parabolic equations coupled by zero and first order terms

This paper is devoted to studying the null and approximate controllability of two linear coupled parabolic equations posed on a smooth domain of R^N (N>1) with coupling terms of zero and first orders and one control localized in some arbitrary nonempty open subset of the domain. We prove the null controllability under a new sufficient condition and we also provide the first example of a not approximately controllable system in the case where the support of one of the nontrivial first order coupling terms intersects the control domain.

Criterion of positivity for semilinear problems with applications in biology

The goal of this article is to provide an useful criterion of positivity and well-posedness for a wide range of infinite dimensional semilinear abstract Cauchy problems. This criterion is based on some weak assumptions on the non-linear part of the semilinear problem and on the existence of a strongly continuous semigroup generated by the differential operator. To illustrate a large variety of applications, we exhibit the feasibility of this criterion through three examples in mathematical biology: epidemiology, predator-prey interactions and oncology.

Indirect controllability of some linear parabolic systems of m equations with m-1 controls involving coupling terms of zero or first order

This paper is devoted to the study of the null and approximate controllability for some classes of linear coupled parabolic systems with less controls than equations. More precisely, for a given bounded domain in R^N, we consider a system of m linear parabolic equations (m > 2) with coupling terms of first and zero order, and m-1 controls localized in some arbitrary nonempty open subset. In the case of constant coupling coefficients, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition to obtain the null or approximate controllability in arbitrary small time. In the case m = 2 and N = 1, we also give a generic sufficient condition to obtain the null or approximate controllability in arbitrary small time for general coefficients depending on the space and times variables, provided that the supports of the coupling terms intersect the control domain. The results are obtained thanks to the fictitious control method together with an algebraic method and some appropriate Carleman estimates.

Controllability of a 2x2 parabolic system by one force with a space-dependent coupling term of order one

This paper is devoted to the controllability of linear systems of two coupled parabolic equations when the coupling involves a space dependent first order term. This system is set on an bounded interval, and the first equation is controlled by a force supported in a subinterval of I or on the boundary. In the case where the intersection of the coupling and control domains is nonempty, we prove null controllability at any time. Otherwise, we provide a minimal time for null controllability. Finally we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the approximate controllability. The main technical tool for obtaining these results is the moment method

Partial null controllability of parabolic linear systems

This paper is devoted to the partial null controllability issue of parabolic linear systems with n equations. Given a bounded domain in R N, we study the effect of m localized controls in a nonempty open subset only controlling p components of the solution (p, m < n). The first main result of this paper is a necessary and sufficient condition when the coupling and control matrices are constant. The second result provides, in a first step, a sufficient condition of partial null controllability when the matrices only depend on time. In a second step, through an example of partially controlled 2x2 parabolic system, we will provide positive and negative results on partial null controllability when the coefficients are space dependent.
