Spin and chiral stiffness of the XY spin glass in two dimensions

We analyze the zero-temperature behavior of the XY Edwards-Anderson spin glass model on a square lattice. A newly developed algorithm combining exact ground-state computations for Ising variables embedded into the planar spins with a specially tailored evolutionary method, resulting in the genetic embedded matching (GEM) approach, allows for the computation of numerically exact ground states for relatively large systems. This enables a thorough re-investigation of the long-standing questions of (i) extensive degeneracy of the ground state and (ii) a possible decoupling of spin and chiral degrees of freedom in such systems. The new algorithm together with appropriate choices for the considered sets of boundary conditions and finite-size scaling techniques allows for a consistent determination of the spin and chiral stiffness scaling exponents.

Ground States and Defect Energies of the Two-dimensional XY Spin Glass from a Quasi-Exact Algorithm

We employ a novel algorithm using a quasi-exact embedded-cluster matching technique as minimization method within a genetic algorithm to reliably obtain numerically exact ground states of the Edwards-Anderson XY spin glass model with bimodal coupling distribution for square lattices of up to 28x28 spins. Contrary to previous conjectures, the ground state of each disorder replica is non-degenerate up to a global O(2) rotation. The scaling of spin and chiral defect energies induced by applying several different sets of boundary conditions exhibits strong crossover effects. This suggests that previous calculations have yielded results far from the asymptotic regime. The novel algorithm and the aspect-ratio scaling technique consistently give $θ_s=-0.308(30)$ and $θ_c=-0.114(16)$ for the spin and chiral stiffness exponents, respectively.

Finite Temperature Transitions in Large Magnetic Field in Dipolar Spin Ice

We use Monte Carlo simulations to identify the mechanism that allows for phase transitions in dipolar spin ice to occur and survive for applied magnetic field, H, much larger in strength than that of the spin-spin interactions. In the most generic and highest symmetry case, the spins on one out of four sublattices of the pyrochlore decouple from the total local exchange+dipolar+applied field. In the special case where H is aligned perfectly along the [110] crystallographic direction, spin chains perpendicular to H show a transition to q=X long range order, which proceeds via a one to three dimensional crossover. We propose that these transitions are relevant to the origin of specific heat features observed in powder samples of the Dy2Ti2O7 spin ice material for H above 1 Tesla.

Theory of paramagnetic scattering in highly frustrated magnets with long-range dipole-dipole interactions: The case of the Tb2Ti2O7, pyrochlore antiferromagnet

Highly frustrated antiferromagnets composed of magnetic rare-earth moments are currently attracting much experimental and theoretical interest. Rare-earth ions generally have small exchange interactions and large magnetic moments. This makes it necessary to understand in detail the role of long-range magnetic dipole-dipole interactions in these systems, in particular in the context of spin-spin correlations that develop in the paramagnetic phase, but are often unable to condense into a conventional long-range magnetic ordered phase. This scenario is most dramatically emphasized in the frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet material Tb2Ti207 which does not order down to 50 mK despite an antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature Tcw ~ -20 K. In this paper we report results from mean-field theory calculations of the paramagnetic elastic neutron-scattering in highly frustrated magnetic systems with long-range dipole-dipole interactions, focusing on the Tb2Ti207 system. Modeling Tb2Ti207 as an antiferromagnetic <111> Ising pyrochlore, we find that the mean-field paramagnetic scattering is inconsistent with the experimentally observed results. Through simple symmetry arguments we demonstrate that the observed paramagnetic correlations in Tb2Ti207 are precluded from being generated by any spin Hamiltonian that considers only Ising spins, but are qualitatively consistent with Heisenberg-like moments. Explicit calculations of the paramagnetic scattering pattern for both <111> Ising and Heisenberg models, which include finite single-ion anisotropy, support these claims. We offer suggestions for reconciling the need to restore spin isotropy with the Ising like structure suggested by the single-ion properties of Tb3+.

Quantum spin fluctuations in the dipolar Heisenberg-like rare earth pyrochlores

The magnetic pyrochlore oxide materials of general chemical formula R2Ti2O7 and R2Sn2O7 (R = rare earth) display a host of interesting physical behaviours depending on the flavour of rare earth ion. These properties depend on the value of the total magnetic moment, the crystal field interactions at each rare earth site and the complex interplay between magnetic exchange and long-range dipole-dipole interactions. This work focuses on the low temperature physics of the dipolar isotropic frustrated antiferromagnetic pyrochlore materials. Candidate magnetic ground states are numerically determined at zero temperature and the role of quantum spin fluctuations around these states are studied using a Holstein-Primakoff spin wave expansion to order 1/S. The results indicate the strong stability of the proposed classical ground states against quantum fluctuations. The inclusion of long range dipole interactions causes a restoration of symmetry and a suppression of the observed anisotropy gap leading to an increase in quantum fluctuations in the ground state when compared to a model with truncated dipole interactions. The system retains most of its classical character and there is little deviation from the fully ordered moment at zero temperature.

Disorder-Driven Magnetic Field Dependence of the Internal Field Distribution in the Bragg Glass Phase of Type-II Superconductors

We use the replica variational method to study the effects of weak point disorder on the variance of the internal field distribution measured in NMR and muon-spin rotation experiments in type-II superconductors. We show that for a simple model there is significant magnetic field dependence which is extrinsic and disorder-driven, and does not have a microscopic (non $s-$wave pairing) origin. Results are presented where we examine the dependence of the magnetic field variance upon the strength of the applied external field.

Theory of Two-Step Magnetic Ordering Phenomena in a Geometrically Frustrated Heisenberg Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet with Long Range Dipolar Interactions

A model for a Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice with exchange and dipole-dipole interactions is studied via mean-field theory. In treating the dipoles by use of the Ewald method, a soft (critical) mode with a unique ordering wave vector is selected for all strengths of the dipole-dipole coupling. For weak dipoles a partially ordered, three sublattice spin structure (P state), with q_{ord}= (1/2 1/2 1/2), is selected. A fully ordered, four sublattice spin structure (F state), with q = (000), competes with the P state and becomes the stable structure as the temperature is reduced. Our results are compared against other theoretical calculations and connections to recent experimental results for Gd2Ti2O7 are discussed.

Understanding Paramagnetic Spin Correlations in the Spin-Liquid Pyrochlore Tb2Ti2O7

Recent elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies of the highly frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb2Ti2O7 have shown some very intriguing features that cannot be modeled by the local <111> classical Ising model, naively expected to describe this system at low temperatures. Using the random phase approximation to take into account fluctuations between the ground state doublet and the first excited doublet, we successfully describe the elastic neutron scattering pattern and dispersion relations in Tb2Ti2O7, semi-quantitatively consistent with experimental observations.

Hexatic-Herringbone Coupling at the Hexatic Transition in Smectic Liquid Crystals: 4-$ε$ Renormalization Group Calculations Revisited

Simple symmetry considerations would suggest that the transition from the smectic-A phase to the long-range bond orientationally ordered hexatic smectic-B phase should belong to the XY universality class. However, a number of experimental studies have constantly reported over the past twenty years "novel" critical behavior with non-XY critical exponents for this transition. Bruinsma and Aeppli argued in Physical Review Letters {\bf 48}, 1625 (1982), using a $4-ε$ renormalization-group calculation, that short-range molecular herringbone correlations coupled to the hexatic ordering drive this transition first order via thermal fluctuations, and that the critical behavior observed in real systems is controlled by a `nearby' tricritical point. We have revisited the model of Bruinsma and Aeppli and present here the results of our study. We have found two nontrivial strongly-coupled herringbone-hexatic fixed points apparently missed by those authors. Yet, those two new nontrivial fixed-points are unstable, and we obtain the same final conclusion as the one reached by Bruinsma and Aeppli, namely that of a fluctuation-driven first order transition. We also discuss the effect of local two-fold distortion of the bond order as a possible missing order parameter in the Hamiltonian.

Long Range Order at Low Temperature in Dipolar Spin Ice

Recently it has been suggested that long range magnetic dipolar interactions are responsible for spin ice behavior in the Ising pyrochlore magnets ${\rm Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$ and ${\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$. We report here numerical results on the low temperature properties of the dipolar spin ice model, obtained via a new loop algorithm which greatly improves the dynamics at low temperature. We recover the previously reported missing entropy in this model, and find a first order transition to a long range ordered phase with zero total magnetization at very low temperature. We discuss the relevance of these results to ${\rm Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$ and ${\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$.

Origin of Spin Ice Behavior in Ising Pyrochlore Magnets with Long Range Dipole Interactions: an Insight from Mean-Field Theory

Recent experiments suggest that the Ising pyrochlore magnets ${\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$ and ${\rm Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$ display qualitative properties of the ferromagnetic nearest neighbor spin ice model proposed by Harris {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 79}, 2554 (1997). The manifestation of spin ice behavior in these systems {\it despite} the energetic constraints introduced by the strength and the long range nature of dipole-dipole interactions, remains difficult to understand. We report here results from a mean field analysis that shed some light on the origin of spin ice behavior in (111) Ising pyrochlores. Specifically, we find that there exist a large frustrating effect of the dipolar interactions beyond the nearest neighbor, and that the degeneracy established by effective ferromagnetic nearest neighbor interactions is only very weakly lifted by the long range interactions. Such behavior only appears beyond a cut-off distance corresponding to $O(10^2)$ nearest neighbor. Our mean field analysis shows that truncation of dipolar interactions leads to spurious ordering phenomena that change with the truncation cut-off distance.

Dipolar Interactions and Origin of Spin Ice in Ising Pyrochlore Magnets

Recent experiments suggest that the Ising pyrochlore magnets ${\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$ and ${\rm Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$ display qualitative properties of the spin ice model proposed by Harris {\it et al.} \prl {\bf 79}, 2554 (1997). We discuss the dipolar energy scale present in both these materials and consider how they can display spin ice behavior {\it despite} the presence of long range interactions. Specifically, we present numerical simulations and a mean field analysis of pyrochlore Ising systems in the presence of nearest neighbor exchange and long range dipolar interactions. We find that two possible phases can occur, a long range ordered antiferromagnetic one and the other dominated by spin ice features. Our quantitative theory is in very good agreement with experimental data on both ${\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$ and ${\rm Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$. We suggest that the nearest neighbor exchange in ${\rm Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$ is {\it antiferromagnetic} and that spin ice behavior is induced by long range dipolar interactions.

Comment on `Ising Pyrochlore Magnets: Low Temperature Properties, ``Ice Rules,'' and Beyond' by R. Siddharthan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 1854 (1999)

In this Comment we argue that Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ does not exhibit a transition to a partially ordered state unlike what is argued in PRL 83, 1854 (1999), that it exhibits spin ice behavior, and that the experimental specific heat data by Siddharthan et al. can be accounted for in terms of a "dipolar spin ice" model by including an expected contibution from the nuclear Ho spins to the appropriate long-range treatment of the dipole-dipole interactions.

Glassiness Vs. Order in Densely Frustrated Josephson Arrays

We carry out extensive Monte Carlo simulations on the Coulomb gas dual to the uniformly frustrated two dimensional XY model, for a sequence of frustrations f converging to the irraltional (3-sqrt 5)/2. We find in these systems a sharp first order equilibrium phase transition to an ordered vortex structure at a T_c which varies only slightly with f. This ordered vortex structure remains in general phase incoherent until a lower pinning transition T_p(f) that varies with f. We argue that the glassy behaviors reported for this model in earlier simulations are dynamic effects.

Topological Defects in the Random-Field XY Model and Randomly Pinned Vortex Lattices

As a simplified model of randomly pinned vortex lattices or charge-density waves, we study the random-field XY model on square ($d=2$) and simple cubic ($d=3$) lattices. We argue, and confirm in simulations, that the spacing between topological defects (vortices) diverges more strongly than the Imry-Ma pinning length as the random field strength, $H$, is reduced. For $d=3$ the data are consistent with a topological phase transition at a nonzero $H_c$ to a vortex-free pinned phase.
