Corrections to local scale invariance in the non-equilibrium dynamics of critical systems: numerical evidences

Local scale invariance (LSI) has been recently proposed as a possible extension of the dynamical scaling in systems at the critical point and during phase ordering. LSI has been applied inter alia to provide predictions for the scaling properties of the response function of non-equilibrium critical systems in the aging regime following a quench from the high-temperature phase to the critical point. These predictions have been confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations and analytical results for some specific models, but they are in disagreement with field-theoretical predictions. By means of Monte Carlo simulations of the critical two- and three-dimensional Ising model with Glauber dynamics, we study the intermediate integrated response, finding deviations from the corresponding LSI predictions that are in qualitative agreement with the field-theoretical computations. This result casts some doubts on the general applicability of LSI to critical dynamics.

Nonequilibrium critical dynamics in inhomogeneous systems

We study nonequilibrium dynamical properties of inhomogeneous systems, in particular at a free surface or at a defect plane. Thereby we consider nonconserved (model-A) dynamics of a system which is prepared in the high-temperature phase and quenched into the critical point. Using Monte Carlo simulations we measure single spin relaxation and autocorrelations, as well as manifold autocorrelations and persistence. We show that, depending on the decay of critical static correlations, the short time dynamics can be of two kinds. For slow decay of local correlations the usual domain growth process takes place with non-stationary and algebraic dynamical correlations. If, however, the local correlations decay sufficiently rapidly we have the so called cluster dissolution scenario, in which case short time dynamical correlations are stationary and have a universal stretched exponential form. This latter phenomenon takes place in the surface of the three-dimensional Ising model and should be observable in real ferromagnets.

Ageing and dynamical scaling in the critical Ising spin glass

The non-equilibrium ageing behaviour of the 3D and 4D critical Ising spin glass is studied for both binary and gaussian disorder. The same phenomenology of the time-dependent scaling as in non-disordered magnets is found but the non-equilibrium exponents and the universal limit fluctuation-dissipation ratio depend on the distribution of the coupling constants.

Two-time autocorrelation function in phase-ordering kinetics from local scale-invariance

The time-dependent scaling of the two-time autocorrelation function of spin systems without disorder undergoing phase-ordering kinetics is considered. Its form is shown to be determined by an extension of dynamical scaling to a local scale-invariance which turns out to be a new version of conformal invariance. The predicted autocorrelator is in agreement with Monte-Carlo data on the autocorrelation function of the 2D kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics quenched to a temperature below criticality.

Aging phenomena in critical semi-infinite systems

Nonequilibrium surface autocorrelation and autoresponse functions are studied numerically in semi-infinite critical systems in the dynamical scaling regime. Dynamical critical behaviour is examined for a nonconserved order parameter in semi-infinite two- and three-dimensional Ising models as well as in the Hilhorst-van Leeuwen model. The latter model permits a systematic study of surface aging phenomena, as the surface critical exponents change continuously as function of a model parameter. The scaling behaviour of surface two-time quantities is investigated and scaling functions are confronted with predictions coming from the theory of local scale invariance. Furthermore, surface fluctuation-dissipation ratios are computed and their asymptotic values are shown to depend on the values of surface critical exponents.

Microcanonical scaling in small systems

A microcanonical finite-size scaling ansatz is discussed. It exploits the existence of a well-defined transition point for systems of finite size in the microcanonical ensemble. The best data collapse obtained for small systems yields values for the critical exponents in good agreement with other approaches. The exact location of the infinite system critical point is not needed when extracting critical exponents from the microcanonical finite-size scaling theory.

Critical phenomena at perfect and non-perfect surfaces

In the past perfect surfaces have been shown to yield a local critical behaviour that differs from the bulk critical behaviour. On the other hand surface defects, whether they are of natural origin or created artificially, are known to modify local quantities. It is therefore important to clarify whether these defects are relevant or irrelevant for the surface critical behaviour. The purpose of this review is two-fold. In the first part we summarise some of the important results on surface criticality at perfect surfaces. Special attention is thereby paid to new developments as for example the study of surface critical behaviour in systems with competing interactions or of surface critical dynamics. In the second part the effect of surface defects (presence of edges, steps, quenched randomness, lines of adatoms, regular geometric patterns) on local critical behaviour in semi-infinite systems and in thin films is discussed in detail. Whereas most of the defects commonly encountered are shown to be irrelevant, some notable exceptions are highlighted. It is shown furthermore that under certain circumstances non-universal local critical behaviour may be observed at surfaces.

Comment on "Fluctuation-dissipation relations in the nonequilibrium critical dynamics of Ising models"

Recently Mayer et al. [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 68}, 016116 (2003)] proposed a new way to compute numerically the fluctuation-dissipation ratios in nonequilibrium critical systems. Using well-known facts of nonequilibrium critical dynamics I show that the leading contributions of the quantities they consider are in fact one-time quantities which are independent of the waiting time. The ratio of these one-time quantities determines the slope of the straight lines observed in the fluctuation-dissipation plots of Mayer et al.

Scaling of the linear response in simple ageing systems without disorder

The time-dependent scaling of the thermoremanent and zero-field-cooled susceptiblities in ferromagnetic spin systems undergoing ageing after a quench to a temperature at or below criticality is studied. A recent debate on their interpretation is resolved by showing that for systems with a short-ranged equilibrium spin-spin correlator and above their roughening temperature, the field-cooled susceptibility $χ_{\rm FC}(t)-χ_0\sim t^{-A}$ where $χ_0$ is related to the equilibrium magnetization and the exponent A is related to the time-dependent scaling of the interface width between ordered domains. The same effect also dominates the scaling of the zero-field-cooled susceptibility $χ_{\rm ZFC}(t,s)$, but does not enter into the thermoremanent susceptibility $ρ_{\rm TRM}(t,s)$. However, there may be large finite-time corrections to the scaling of $ρ_{\rm TRM}(t,s)$ which are explicitly derived and may be needed in order to extract reliable ageing exponents. Consistency with the predictions of local scale invariance is confirmed in the Glauber-Ising and spherical models.

Out-of-equilibrium critical dynamics at surfaces: Cluster dissolution and non-algebraic correlations

We study nonequilibrium dynamical properties at a free surface after the system is quenched from the high-temperature phase into the critical point. We show that if the spatial surface correlations decay sufficiently rapidly the surface magnetization and/or the surface manifold autocorrelations has a qualitatively different universal short time behavior than the same quantities in the bulk. At a free surface cluster dissolution may take place instead of domain growth yielding stationary dynamical correlations that decay in a stretched exponential form. This phenomenon takes place in the three-dimensional Ising model and should be observable in real ferromagnets.

Local scale invariance and its applications to strongly anisotropic critical phenomena

The generalization of dynamical scaling to local scale invariance is reviewed. Starting from a recapitulation of the phenomenology of ageing phenomena, the generalization of dynamical scaling to local scale transformation for any given dynamical exponent $z$ is described and the two distinct types of local scale invariance are presented. The special case $z=2$ and the associated Ward identity of Schrödinger invariance is treated. Local scale invariance predicts the form of the two-point functions. Existing confirmations of these predictions for (I) the Lifshitz points in spin systems with competing interactions such as the ANNNI model and (II) non-equilibrium ageing phenomena as occur in the kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics are described.

Scaling of the magnetic linear response in phase-ordering kinetics

The scaling of the thermoremanent magnetization and of the dissipative part of the non-equilibrium magnetic susceptibility is analysed as a function of the waiting-time $s$ for a simple ferromagnet undergoing phase-ordering kinetics after a quench into the ferromagnetically ordered phase. Their scaling forms describe the cross-over between two power-law regimes governed by the non-equilibrium exponents $a$ and $λ_R/z$, respectively. A relation between $a$, the dynamical exponent $z$ and the equilibrium exponent $η$ is derived from scaling arguments. Explicit tests in the Glauber-Ising model and the kinetic spherical model are presented.

Phase transitions in a cluster molecular field approximation

Cluster molecular field approximations represent a substantial progress over the simple Weiss theory where only one spin is considered in the molecular field resulting from all the other spins. In this work we discuss a systematic way of improving the molecular field approximation by inserting spin clusters of variable sizes into a homogeneously magnetised background. The density of states of these spin clusters is then computed exactly. We show that the true non-classical critical exponents can be extracted from spin clusters treated in such a manner. For this purpose a molecular field finite size scaling theory is discussed and effective critical exponents are analysed. Reliable values of critical quantities of various Ising and Potts models are extracted from very small system sizes.

Microcanonical determination of the order parameter critical exponent

A highly efficient Monte Carlo method for the calculation of the density of states of classical spin systems is presented. As an application, we investigate the density of states Omega_N(E,M) of two- and three-dimensional Ising models with N spins as a function of energy E and magnetization M. For a fixed energy lower than a critical value E_{c,N} the density of states exhibits two sharp maxima at $M = \pm M_{sp}(E)$ which define the microcanonical spontaneous magnetization. An analysis of the form $M_{sp}(E) \propto (E_{c,\infty}-E)^{β_ε}$ yields very good results for the critical exponent $β_ε$, thus demonstrating that critical exponents can be determined by analysing directly the density of states of finite systems.

Anisotropic scaling and generalized conformal invariance at Lifshitz points

A new variant of the Wolff cluster algorithm is proposed for simulating systems with competing interactions. This method is used in a high-precision study of the Lifshitz point of the 3D ANNNI model. At the Lifshitz point, several critical exponents are found and the anisotropic scaling of the correlators is verified. The functional form of the two-point correlators is shown to be consistent with the predictions of generalized conformal invariance.

Surface critical exponents at a uniaxial Lifshitz point

Using Monte Carlo techniques, the surface critical behaviour of three-dimensional semi-infinite ANNNI models with different surface orientations with respect to the axis of competing interactions is investigated. Special attention is thereby paid to the surface criticality at the bulk uniaxial Lifshitz point encountered in this model. The presented Monte Carlo results show that the mean-field description of semi-infinite ANNNI models is qualitatively correct. Lifshitz point surface critical exponents at the ordinary transition are found to depend on the surface orientation. At the special transition point, however, no clear dependency of the critical exponents on the surface orientation is revealed. The values of the surface critical exponents presented in this study are the first estimates available beyond mean-field theory.
