Low Energy Supergravity Revisited (I)

General forms of the Kähler and superpotenials that lead to consistent low energy broken Supersymmetry originating from $N=1$ Supergravity have been classified and used for model building since more than three decades. We point out the incompleteness of this classification when hidden sector vacuum expectation values are of the order of the Planck mass. Focusing in this paper mainly on the case of minimal Kähler potential, we adopt a rigorous approach that retrieves on the one hand the known forms, and demonstrate on the other hand the existence of a whole set of new forms for the superpotential of which we give a complete classification. The latter forms involve a new type of chiral superfields having the unusual property of belonging neither to the hidden sector nor to the conventional observable sector. Comparing the obtained forms with the conventional ones, we argue how new possibilities for model building can arise, and discuss the gravity mediation of soft as well as additional hard (but parametrically small) Supersymmetry breaking, in the presence of the new type of chiral superfields. In the simplest case, we study the vacuum structure, characterize the masses and couplings of the scalar components to the hidden and observable sectors and discuss briefly the physical role they could play. In the generic case, we estimate the magnitude and possible consequences of the hard breaking of Supersymmetry in terms of the interplay between hidden and visible sectors mass scales.

Multiloop Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangians, Schwinger pair creation, and the QED N - photon amplitudes

An update is given on our long-term effort to perform a three-loop check on the Affleck-Alvarez-Manton/Lebedev-Ritus exponentiation conjecture for the imaginary part of the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian, using 1+1 dimensional QED as a toy model. After reviewing the history and significance of the conjecture, we present trigonometric integral representations for the single electron loop contributions to the three-loop Lagrangian, and develop a symmetry-based method for the calculation of their weak-field expansion coefficients.

Asymptotic behavior of the QED perturbation series

In this talk, I will summarize the present state of a long-term effort to obtain information on the high-order asymptotic behaviour of the QED perturbation series through the effective action. Starting with the constant-field case, I will discuss the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian in various dimensions, and up to the three-loop level. This Lagrangian holds the information on the N-photon amplitudes in the low-energy limit, and combining it with spinor helicity methods explicit all-N results can be obtained at the one-loop and, for the "all + " amplitudes, also at the two-loop level. For the imaginary part of the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian, an all-loop formula has been conjectured independently by Affleck, Alvarez and Manton for Scalar QED, and by Lebedev and Ritus for Spinor QED. This formula can be related through a Borel dispersion relation to the leading large-N behaviour of the N-photon amplitudes. It is analytic in the fine structure constant, which is puzzling and suggests a diagrammatic investigation of the large-N limit in perturbation theory. Preliminary results of such a study for the 1+1 dimensional case throw doubt on the validity of the conjecture.

Doubly-charged particles at the Large Hadron Collider

In this work we investigate the production and signatures of doubly-charged particles at the Large Hadron Collider. We start with the Standard Model particle content and representations and add generic doubly-charged exotic particles. We classify these doubly-charged states according to their spin, considering scalar, fermionic and vectorial fields, and according to their SU(2)L representation, being chosen to be either trivial, fundamental, or adjoint. We write the most general interactions between them and the Standard Model sector and study their production modes and possible decay channels. We then probe how they can most likely be observed and how particles with different spin and SU(2)L representations could be possibly distinguished.

Chargino and neutralino production at the Large Hadron Collider in left-right supersymmetric models

We present a complete and extensive analysis of associated chargino and neutralino production in the framework of a supersymmetric theory augmented by left-right symmetry. This model provides additional gaugino and higgsino states in both the neutral and charged sectors, thus potentially enhancing new physics signals at the LHC. For a choice of benchmark scenarios, we calculate cross sections for 7, 8 and 14 TeV. We then simulate events expected to be produced at the LHC, and classify them according to the number of leptons in the final state. We devise methods to reduce the background and compare the signals with consistently simulated events for the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We pinpoint promising scenarios where left-right symmetric supersymmetric signals can be distinguished both from background and from the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model events.

Automated mass spectrum generation for new physics

We describe an extension of the FeynRules package dedicated to the automatic generation of the mass spectrum associated with any Lagrangian-based quantum field theory. After introducing a simplified way to implement particle mixings, we present a new class of FeynRules functions allowing both for the analytical computation of all the model mass matrices and for the generation of a C++ package, dubbed ASperGe. This program can then be further employed for a numerical evaluation of the rotation matrices necessary to diagonalize the field basis. We illustrate these features in the context of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model, the Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Standard Model and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

The Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian beyond one loop

We review what is presently known about higher loop corrections to the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian and its Scalar QED analogue. The use of those corrections as a tool for the study of the properties of the QED perturbation series is outlined. As a further step in a long-term effort to prove or disprove the convergence of the N photon amplitudes in the quenched approximation, we present a parameter integral representation of the three-loop Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian in 1+1 dimensional QED, obtained in the worldline formalism.

Hidden quartic symmetry in N=2 supersymmetry

It is shown that for N=2 supersymmetry a hidden symmetry arises from the hybrid structure of a quartic algebra. The implications for invariant Lagrangians and multiplets are explored.

An infinite supermultiplet of massive higher-spin fields

The representation theory underlying the infinite-component relativistic wave equation written by Majorana is revisited from a modern perspective. On the one hand, the massless solutions of this equation are shown to form a supermultiplet of the superPoincare algebra with tensorial central charges; it can also be obtained as the infinite spin limit of massive solutions. On the other hand, the Majorana equation is generalized for any space-time dimension and for arbitrary Regge trajectories. Inspired from these results, an infinite supermultiplet of massive fields of all spins and of equal mass is constructed in four dimensions and proved to carry an irreducible representation of the orthosymplectic group OSp(1|4) and of the superPoincare group with tensorial charges.

Fractional helicity, Lorentz symmetry breaking, compactification and anyons

We construct the covariant, spinor sets of relativistic wave equations for a massless field on the basis of the two copies of the R-deformed Heisenberg algebra. For the finite-dimensional representations of the algebra they give a universal description of the states with integer and half-integer helicity. The infinite-dimensional representations correspond formally to the massless states with fractional (real) helicity. The solutions of the latter type, however, break down the (3+1)$D$ Poincaré invariance to the (2+1)$D$ Poincaré invariance, and via a compactification on a circle a consistent theory for massive anyons in $D$=2+1 is produced. A general analysis of the ``helicity equation'' shows that the (3+1)$D$ Poincaré group has no massless irreducible representations with the trivial non-compact part of the little group constructed on the basis of the infinite-dimensional representations of $sl(2,\CC)$. This result is in contrast with the massive case where integer and half-integer spin states can be described on the basis of such representations, and means, in particular, that the (3+1)$D$ Dirac positive energy covariant equations have no massless limit.

Cubic root of Klein-Gordon equation

We construct new relativistic linear differential equation in $d$ dimensions generalizing Dirac equation by employing the Clifford algebra of the cubic polynomial associated to Klein-Gordon operator multiplied by the mass parameter. Unlike the Dirac case where the spin content is unique and Lorentz covariance is manifest, here the spin as well as Lorentz covariance of the theory are related to the choice of representation of the Clifford algebra. One of the considered explicit matrix representations gives rise to anyon-like fields in $d=1+1$. Coupling to a U(1) gauge field is discussed and compared with Dirac theory.

Particle Spectrum in Supersymmetric Models with a Gauge Singlet

We scan the complete parameter space of the supersymmetric standard model extended by a gauge singlet, which is compatible with the following constraints: universal soft supersymmetry breaking terms at the GUT scale, finite running Yukawa couplings up to the GUT scale and present experimental bounds on all sparticles, Higgs scalar and top quark. The full radiative corrections to the Higgs potential due to the top/stop sector are included. We find a lower limit on the gluino mass of 160 GeV, upper limits on the lightest neutral scalar Higgs mass dependent on $m_{top}$ and the size of the soft supersymmetry breaking terms, and the possibility of a Higgs scalar as light as 10 GeV, but with reduced couplings to the Z boson.
