pi_0 --> gamma gamma and the axial anomaly at non zero temperature

In vacuum, in the chiral limit the coupling of a pion to two on-shell photons is directly related to the coefficient of the axial anomaly in QED. This relationship is lost at any nonzero temperature. Explicit calculations show that the coupling decreases with temperature and vanishes at Tc, the temperature of chiral symmetry restoration.

Lattice Formulation of the Standard Model

Combining the Kaplan surface mode approach for chiral fermions with added terms motivated by Eichten and Preskill suggests the possibility for a lattice regularization of the standard model which is finite, exactly gauge invariant, and only has physically desired states in its low energy spectrum. The conjectured scheme manifestly requires anomaly cancelation and explicitly contains baryon and lepton number violating terms.

Scattering of soft, cool pions

Consider the effective lagrangian for pions in the chiral limit, computed to leading order in an expansion about zero temperature. To describe the scattering of pions with small momenta, it is necessary to include not just the usual shift in the pion decay constant, but also a new, nonlocal term, which is precisely analogous to the hard thermal loops of hot gauge theories.

On the Physics of a Cool Pion Gas

At finite temperature, the Nambu-Goldstone bosons of a spontaneously broken chiral symmetry travel at a velocity $v < 1$. This effect first appears at order $\sim T^4$ in an expansion about low temperature, and can be related to the appearence of two distinct pion decay constants in a thermal bath. We discuss some consequences on the thermodynamics of a gas of massless pions.

Species doubling and effective Lagrangians

Coupling gauge fields to the chiral currents from an effective Lagrangian for pseudoscalar mesons naturally gives rise to a species doubling phenomenon similar to that seen with fermionic fields in lattice gauge theory.

Propagation of Cool Pions

For an exact chiral symmetry which is spontaneously broken at zero temperature, we show that at nonzero temperature, generally pions travel at {\it less} than the speed of light. This effect first appears at next to leading order in an expansion about low temperature. When the chiral symmetry is approximate we obtain two formulas, like that of Gell-Mann, Oakes, and Renner, for the static and dynamic pion masses.

Cool Pions move at less than the speed of light

At nonzero temperature, pions propagate through a thermal medium at less than the speed of light. About low temperature, this effect begins not at $\sim T^2$, but at next to leading order, $\sim T^4$. We also derive the generalization of the relation of Gell-Mann, Oakes, and Renner to nonzero temperature.

Species Doubling and Chiral Lagrangians

Coupling gauge fields to the chiral currents from an effective Lagrangian for pseudoscalar mesons naturally gives rise to a species doubling phenomenon similar to that seen with fermionic fields in lattice gauge theory.
