Splitting strategies for the fully-coupled nonlinear thermo-hydro-mechanical problem

We propose novel semi-decoupled and fully-decoupled iterative algorithms for efficiently solving the fully-coupled nonlinear four-field thermo-poroelastic model discretized in space by discontinuous Galerkin method on polytopal grids. We present the model problem, its four-field formulation, and the arbitrary-order weighted symmetric interior penalty scheme exploited for its spatial discretization. Such a scheme is robust with respect to strong heterogeneities in the model coefficients. Then, we present the two solution strategies and prove that under suitable conditions both schemes are convergent. A wide set of numerical simulations is presented to assess the convergence and robustness properties of the proposed method. Moreover, we test the scheme with literature and physically sound test cases for proof-of-concept applications in the geophysical context.

Polytopal Discontinuous Galerkin Discretizations of Coupled Non-Newtonian Stokes-Darcy Systems

We propose and analyze a polytopal discontinuous Galerkin method for the numerical approximation of a coupled non-Newtonian Stokes-Darcy system modeling the interaction between a non-Newtonian free-flow fluid and a non-Newtonian flow through a porous medium. Due to its geometric flexibility and arbitrary-order accuracy, the proposed discretization scheme is well-suited to configurations with complex geometries. We provide a complete a-priori analysis that considers shear-dependent and velocity-dependent non-Newtonian viscosity models for the free-flow and porous media regions, respectively. The well-posedness, stability, and error bounds of the method are established in the framework of generalized inf-sup theory. Error estimates are confirmed by numerical results.

A nonconforming method for a generalized Darcy-Forchheimer model

We analyze a dual mixed nonconforming discretization of a generalized Darcy-Forchheimer model. Compared to the analogous scheme proposed by Girault and Wheeler, we consider general, i.e., nonquadratic, Forchheimer nonlinearities; we admit mixed, inhomogeneous boundary conditions; we allow for more general, i.e., with lower Lebesgue regularity, permeability tensors; we construct general-order schemes; we prove convergence to the exact solution under low regularity assumptions, based on novel Sobolev-trace inequalities for broken spaces; we derive error estimates of general-order assuming extra regularity of the exact solution and data; we present numerical results assessing the performance of the proposed schemes for different types of nonlinearity and nonlinear solvers.

Virtual Element methods for non-Newtonian shear-thickening fluid flow problems

In this work, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis for Virtual Element discretizations of incompressible non-Newtonian flows governed by the Carreau-Yasuda constitutive law, in the shear-thickening regime (r > 2) including both degenerate (delta = 0) and non-degenerate (delta > 0) cases. The proposed Virtual Element method features two distinguishing advantages: the construction of an exactly divergence-free discrete velocity field and compatibility with general polygonal meshes. The analysis presented in this work extends a previous work, where only shear-thinning behavior (1 < r < 2) was considered. Indeed, the theoretical analysis of the shear-thickening setting requires several novel analytical tools, including: an inf-sup stability analysis of the discrete velocity-pressure coupling in non-Hilbertian norms, a stabilization term specifically designed to address the nonlinear structure as the exponent r > 2; and the introduction of a suitable discrete norm tailored to the underlying nonlinear constitutive relation. Numerical results demonstrate the practical performance of the proposed formulation.

A robust fully-mixed finite element method with skew-symmetry penalization for low-frequency poroelasticity

In this work, we present and analyze a fully-mixed finite element scheme for the dynamic poroelasticity problem in the low-frequency regime. We write the problem as a four-field, first-order, hyperbolic system of equations where the symmetry constraint on the stress field is imposed via penalization. This strategy is equivalent to adding a perturbation to the saddle point system arising when the stress symmetry is weakly-imposed. The coupling of solid and fluid phases is discretized by means of stable mixed elements in space and implicit time advancing schemes. The presented stability analysis is fully robust with respect to meaningful cases of degenerate model parameters. Numerical tests validate the convergence and robustness and assess the performances of the method for the simulation of wave propagation phenomena in porous materials.

Trace inequalities for piecewise $W^{1,p}$ functions over general polytopic meshes

Trace inequalities are crucial tools to derive the stability of partial differential equations with inhomogeneous, natural boundary conditions. In the analysis of corresponding Galerkin methods, they are also essential to show convergence of sequences of discrete solutions to the exact one for data with minimal regularity under mesh refinements and/or degree of accuracy increase. In nonconforming discretizations, such as Crouzeix-Raviart and discontinuous Galerkin, the trial and test spaces consists of functions that are only piecewise continuous: standard trace inequalities cannot be used in this case. In this work, we prove several trace inequalities for piecewise $W^{1,p}$ functions. Compared to analogous results already available in the literature, our inequalities are established: (i) on fairly general polytopic meshes (with arbitrary number of facets and arbitrarily small facets); (ii) without the need of finite dimensional arguments (e.g., inverse estimates, approximation properties of averaging operators); (iii) for different ranges of maximal and nonmaximal Lebesgue indices.

Conforming and discontinuous discretizations of non-isothermal Darcy-Forchheimer flows

We present and analyze in a unified setting two schemes for the numerical discretization of a Darcy-Forchheimer fluid flow model coupled with an advection-diffusion equation modeling the temperature distribution in the fluid. The first approach is based on fully discontinuous Galerkin discretization spaces. In contrast, in the second approach, the velocity is approximated in the Raviart-Thomas space, and the pressure and temperature are still piecewise discontinuous. A fixed-point linearization strategy, naturally inducing an iterative splitting solution, is proposed for treating the nonlinearities of the problem. We present a unified stability analysis and prove the convergence of the iterative algorithm under mild requirements on the problem data. A wide set of two- and three-dimensional simulations is presented to assess the error decay and demonstrate the practical performance of the proposed approaches in physically sound test cases.

Fully-Mixed Virtual Element Method for the Biot Problem

Poroelasticity describes the interaction of deformation and fluid flow in saturated porous media. A fully-mixed formulation of Biot's poroelasticity problem has the advantage of producing a better approximation of the Darcy velocity and stress field, as well as satisfying local mass and momentum conservation. In this work, we focus on a novel four-fields Virtual Element discretization of Biot's equations. The stress symmetry is strongly imposed in the definition of the discrete space, thus avoiding the use of an additional Lagrange multiplier. A complete a priori analysis is performed, showing the robustness of the proposed numerical method with respect to limiting material properties. The first order convergence of the lowest-order fully-discrete numerical method, which is obtained by coupling the spatial approximation with the backward Euler time-advancing scheme, is confirmed by a complete 3D numerical validation. A well known poroelasticity benchmark is also considered to assess the robustness properties and computational performance.

Sobolev-Poincar\'e inequalities for piecewise $W^{1,p}$ functions over general polytopic meshes

We establish Sobolev-Poincar\'e inequalities for piecewise $W^{1,p}$ functions over families of fairly general polytopic (thence also shape-regular simplicial and Cartesian) meshes in any dimension; amongst others, they cover the case of standard Poincar\'e inequalities for piecewise $W^{1,p}$ functions and can be useful in the analysis of nonconforming finite element discretizations of nonlinear problems. Crucial tools in their derivation are novel Sobolev-trace inequalities and $W^{1,p}$-stable right-inverses of the divergence satisfying mixed boundary conditions. We provide estimates with constants having an explicit dependence on the geometric properties of the domain and the underlying family of polytopic meshes.

Stability and interpolation estimates of Hellinger-Reissner virtual element spaces

We prove stability and interpolation estimates for Hellinger-Reissner virtual elements; the constants appearing in such estimates only depend on the aspect ratio of the polytope under consideration and the degree of accuracy of the scheme. We further investigate numerically the behaviour of the constants appearing in the stability estimates on sequences of badly-shaped polytopes and for increasing degree of accuracy.

Polytopal discontinuous Galerkin methods for low-frequency poroelasticity coupled to unsteady Stokes flow

We focus on the numerical analysis of a polygonal discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the simulation of the exchange of fluid between a deformable saturated poroelastic structure and an adjacent free-flow channel. We specifically address wave phenomena described by the low-frequency Biot model in the poroelastic region and unsteady Stokes flow in the open channel, possibly an isolated cavity or a connected fracture system. The coupling at the interface between the two regions is realized by means of transmission conditions expressing conservation laws. The spatial discretization hinges on the weak form of the two-displacement poroelasticity system and a stress formulation of the Stokes equation with weakly imposed symmetry. We present a complete stability analysis for the proposed semi-discrete formulation and derive a-priori hp-error estimates.

A polytopal discontinuous Galerkin method for the pseudo-stress formulation of the unsteady Stokes problem

This work aims to construct and analyze a discontinuous Galerkin method on polytopal grids (PolydG) to solve the pseudo-stress formulation of the unsteady Stokes problem. The pseudo-stress variable is introduced due to the growing interest in non-Newtonian flows and coupled interface problems, where stress assumes a fundamental role. The space-time discretization of the problem is achieved by combining the PolydG approach with the implicit theta-method time integration scheme. For both the semi- and fully-discrete problems we present a detailed stability analysis. Moreover, we derive convergence estimates for the fully discrete space-time discretization. A set of verification tests is presented to verify the theoretical estimates and the application of the method to cases of engineering interest.

A Ne\v{c}as-Lions inequality with symmetric gradients on star-shaped domains based on a first order Babu\v{s}ka-Aziz inequality

We prove a Ne\v{c}as-Lions inequality with symmetric gradients on two and three dimensional domains of diameter $R$ that are star-shaped with respect to a ball of radius $\rho$; the constants in the inequality are explicit with respect to $R$ and $\rho$. Crucial tools in deriving this inequality are a first order Babu\v{s}ka-Aziz inequality based on Bogovski\u{i}'s construction of a right-inverse of the divergence and Fourier transform techniques proposed by Dur\'an. As a byproduct, we derive arbitrary order estimates in arbitrary dimension for that operator.

Stability, convergence, and pressure-robustness of numerical schemes for incompressible flows with hybrid velocity and pressure

In this work we study the stability, convergence, and pressure-robustness of discretization methods for incompressible flows with hybrid velocity and pressure. Specifically, focusing on the Stokes problem, we identify a set of assumptions that yield inf-sup stability as well as error estimates which distinguish the velocity- and pressure-related contributions to the error. We additionally identify the key properties under which the pressure-related contributions vanish in the estimate of the velocity, thus leading to pressure-robustness. Several examples of existing and new schemes that fit into the framework are provided, and extensive numerical validation of the theoretical properties is provided.

lymph: discontinuous poLYtopal methods for Multi-PHysics differential problems

We present the library lymph for the finite element numerical discretization of coupled multi-physics problems. lymph is a Matlab library for the discretization of partial differential equations based on high-order discontinuous Galerkin methods on polytopal grids (PolyDG) for spatial discretization coupled with suitable finite-difference time marching schemes. The objective of the paper is to introduce the library by describing it in terms of installation, input/output data, and code structure, highlighting - when necessary - key implementation aspects related to the method. A user guide, proceeding step-by-step in the implementation and solution of a Poisson problem, is also provided. In the last part of the paper, we show the results obtained for several differential problems, namely the Poisson problem, the heat equation, the elastodynamics system, and a multiphysics problem coupling poroelasticity and acoustic equations. Through these examples, we show the convergence properties and highlight some of the main features of the proposed method, i.e. geometric flexibility, high-order accuracy, and robustness with respect to heterogeneous physical parameters.

Robust discontinuous Galerkin-based scheme for the fully-coupled non-linear thermo-hydro-mechanical problem

We present and analyze a discontinuous Galerkin method for the numerical modeling of the non-linear fully-coupled thermo-hydro-mechanic problem. We propose a high-order symmetric weighted interior penalty scheme that supports general polytopal grids and is robust with respect to strong heteorgeneities in the model coefficients. We focus on the treatment of the non-linear convective transport term in the energy conservation equation and we propose suitable stabilization techniques that make the scheme robust for advection-dominated regimes. The stability analysis of the problem and the convergence of the fixed-point linearization strategy are addressed theoretically under mild requirements on the problem's data. A complete set of numerical simulations is presented in order to assess the convergence and robustness properties of the proposed method.

Discontinuous Galerkin discretization of coupled poroelasticity-elasticity problems

This work is concerned with the analysis of a space-time finite element discontinuous Galerkin method on polytopal meshes (XT-PolydG) for the numerical discretization of wave propagation in coupled poroelastic-elastic media. The mathematical model consists of the low-frequency Biot's equations in the poroelastic medium and the elastodynamics equation for the elastic one. To realize the coupling, suitable transmission conditions on the interface between the two domains are (weakly) embedded in the formulation. The proposed PolydG discretization in space is then coupled with a dG time integration scheme, resulting in a full space-time dG discretization. We present the stability analysis for both the continuous and the semidiscrete formulations, and we derive error estimates for the semidiscrete formulation in a suitable energy norm. The method is applied to a wide set of numerical test cases to verify the theoretical bounds. Examples of physical interest are also presented to investigate the capability of the proposed method in relevant geophysical scenarios.

Numerical modelling of wave propagation phenomena in thermo-poroelastic media via discontinuous Galerkin methods

We present and analyze a high-order discontinuous Galerkin method for the space discretization of the wave propagation model in thermo-poroelastic media. The proposed scheme supports general polytopal grids. Stability analysis and $hp$-version error estimates in suitable energy norms are derived for the semi-discrete problem. The fully-discrete scheme is then obtained based on employing an implicit Newmark-$β$ time integration scheme. A wide set of numerical simulations is reported, both for the verification of the theoretical estimates and for examples of physical interest. A comparison with the results of the poroelastic model is provided too, highlighting the differences between the predictive capabilities of the two models.
