Just enough inflation: power spectrum modifications at large scales

We show that models of `just enough' inflation, where the slow-roll evolution lasted only $50-60$ e-foldings, feature modifications of the CMB power spectrum at large angular scales. We perform a systematic and model-independent analysis of any possible non-slow-roll background evolution prior to the final stage of slow-roll inflation. We find a high degree of universality since most common backgrounds like fast-roll evolution, matter or radiation-dominance give rise to a power loss at large angular scales and a peak together with an oscillatory behaviour at scales around the value of the Hubble parameter at the beginning of slow-roll inflation. Depending on the value of the equation of state parameter, different pre-inflationary epochs lead instead to an enhancement of power at low-$\ell$, and so seem disfavoured by recent observational hints for a lack of CMB power at $\ell\lesssim 40$. We also comment on the importance of initial conditions and the possibility to have multiple pre-inflationary stages.

A 3.55 keV Photon Line and its Morphology from a 3.55 keV ALP Line

Galaxy clusters can efficiently convert axion-like particles (ALPs) to photons. We propose that the recently claimed detection of a 3.55--3.57 keV line in the stacked spectra of a large number of galaxy clusters and the Andromeda galaxy may originate from the decay of either a scalar or fermionic $7.1$ keV dark matter species into an axion-like particle (ALP) of mass $m_{a} \lesssim 6\cdot 10^{-11}~{\rm eV}$, which subsequently converts to a photon in the cluster magnetic field. In contrast to models in which the photon line arises directly from dark matter decay or annihilation, this can explain the anomalous line strength in the Perseus cluster. As axion-photon conversion scales as $B^2$ and cool core clusters have high central magnetic fields, this model can also explains the observed peaking of the line emission in the cool cores of the Perseus, Ophiuchus and Centaurus clusters, as opposed to the much larger dark matter halos. We describe distinctive predictions of this scenario for future observations.

Correlation between Dark Matter and Dark Radiation in String Compactifications

Reheating in string compactifications is generically driven by the decay of the lightest modulus which produces Standard Model particles, dark matter and light hidden sector degrees of freedom that behave as dark radiation. This common origin allows us to find an interesting correlation between dark matter and dark radiation. By combining present upper bounds on the effective number of neutrino species N_eff with lower bounds on the reheating temperature as a function of the dark matter mass m_DM from Fermi data, we obtain strong constraints on the (N_eff,m_DM)-plane. Most of the allowed region in this plane corresponds to non-thermal scenarios with Higgsino-like dark matter. Thermal dark matter can be allowed only if N_eff tends to its Standard Model value. We show that the above situation is realised in models with perturbative moduli stabilisation where the production of dark radiation is unavoidable since bulk closed string axions remain light and do not get eaten up by anomalous U(1)s.

Explicit de Sitter Flux Vacua for Global String Models with Chiral Matter

We address the open question of performing an explicit stabilisation of all closed string moduli (including dilaton, complex structure and Kaehler moduli) in fluxed type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications with chiral matter. Using toric geometry we construct Calabi-Yau manifolds with del Pezzo singularities. D-branes located at such singularities can support the Standard Model gauge group and matter content. In order to control complex structure moduli stabilisation we consider Calabi-Yau manifolds which exhibit a discrete symmetry that reduces the effective number of complex structure moduli. We calculate the corresponding periods in the symplectic basis of invariant three-cycles and find explicit flux vacua for concrete examples. We compute the values of the flux superpotential and the string coupling at these vacua. Starting from these explicit complex structure solutions, we obtain AdS and dS minima where the Kaehler moduli are stabilised by a mixture of D-terms, non-perturbative and perturbative alpha'-corrections as in the LARGE Volume Scenario. In the considered example the visible sector lives at a dP_6 singularity which can be higgsed to the phenomenologically interesting class of models at the dP_3 singularity.

D3/D7 Branes at Singularities: Constraints from Global Embedding and Moduli Stabilisation

In the framework of type IIB string compactifications on Calabi-Yau orientifolds we describe how to construct consistent global embeddings of models with fractional D3-branes and connected `flavour' D7-branes at del Pezzo singularities with moduli stabilisation. Our results are applied to build an explicit compact example with a left-right symmetric model at a dP_0 singularity which features three families of chiral matter and gauge coupling unification at the intermediate scale. We show how to stabilise the moduli obtaining a controlled de Sitter minimum and spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. We find an interesting non-trivial dynamical relation between the requirement of TeV-scale soft terms and the correct phenomenological values of the unified gauge coupling and unification scale.

Heterotic Moduli Stabilisation

We perform a systematic analysis of moduli stabilisation for weakly coupled heterotic string theory compactified on manifolds which are Calabi-Yau up to alpha' effects. We review how to fix all geometric and bundle moduli in a supersymmetric way by fractional fluxes, the requirement of a holomorphic gauge bundle, D-terms, higher order perturbative contributions to W, non-perturbative and threshold effects. We then show that alpha' corrections to K lead to new stable Minkowski (or dS) vacua where the complex structure moduli Z and the dilaton are fixed supersymmetrically, while the fixing of the Kahler moduli at a lower scale leads to spontaneous SUSY breaking. The minimum lies at moderately large volumes of all geometric moduli, at a perturbative string coupling and at the right value of the GUT coupling. We also give a dynamical derivation of anisotropic compactifications which allow for gauge coupling unification around 10^16 GeV. The gravitino mass can be anywhere between the GUT and TeV scale depending on the fixing of the Z-moduli. In general, these are fixed by turning on background fluxes, leading to a gravitino mass around the GUT scale since the heterotic 3-form flux does not contain enough freedom to tune W to small values. Moreover accommodating the observed value of the cosmological constant (CC) is a challenge. Low-energy SUSY could instead be obtained in particular situations where the gauge bundle is holomorphic only at a point-like sub-locus of Z-moduli space, or where the number of Z-moduli is small (like orbifold models), since in these cases one may fix all moduli without turning on any quantised flux. However tuning the CC is even more of a challenge in these cases. Another option is to focus on non-complex manifolds since these allow for new geometric fluxes which can be used to tune W and the CC, even if their moduli space is presently only poorly understood.

A Note on the Magnitude of the Flux Superpotential

The magnitude of the flux superpotential $W_{flux}$ plays a crucial role in determining the scales of IIB string compactifications after moduli stabilisation. It has been argued that values of $W_{flux}$ much less than one are preferred, and even required for physical and consistency reasons. This note revisits these arguments. We establish that the coupling (g) of heavy Kaluza-Klein modes to light states scales as ${M_{KK} / M_{Pl}}$ (hence is suppressed by two third powers of the inverse volume of compactification) and argue that consistency of the superspace derivative expansion requires $gF/M^2 \sim m_{3/2}/ M_{KK} << 1$, where $F$ is the auxiliary field of the light fields and $M$ the ultraviolet cutoff. This gives only a mild constraint on the flux superpotential, $W_{flux} << V^{1/3}$ (where V is the volume of the compactification), which can be easily satisfied for order one values of $W_{flux}$. This regime is also statistically favoured and makes the Bousso-Polchinski mechanism for the vacuum energy hierarchically more efficient.

Axion-like Particles from String Compactifications

We review how axion-like particles (ALPs) naturally emerge in the low-energy effective field theory of string compactifications. We focus on the study of their mass spectrum and couplings, stressing that they depend on the mechanism used to fix the moduli. We present concrete examples where either open or closed string modes behave as QCD axions which do not overproduce cold dark matter. Relativistic ALPs can also be produced by the decay of the lightest modulus which drives reheating. These ALPs contribute to dark radiation and could be detected via axion-photon conversion in astrophysical magnetic fields.

Power Suppression at Large Scales in String Inflation

We study a possible origin of the anomalous suppression of the power spectrum at large angular scales in the cosmic microwave background within the framework of explicit string inflationary models where inflation is driven by a closed string modulus parameterizing the size of the extra dimensions. In this class of models the apparent power loss at large scales is caused by the background dynamics which involves a sharp transition from a fast-roll power law phase to a period of Starobinsky-like slow-roll inflation. An interesting feature of this class of string inflationary models is that the number of e-foldings of inflation is inversely proportional to the string coupling to a positive power. Therefore once the string coupling is tuned to small values in order to trust string perturbation theory, enough e-foldings of inflation are automatically obtained without the need of extra tuning. Moreover, in the less tuned cases the sharp transition responsible for the power loss takes place just before the last 50-60 e-foldings of inflation. We illustrate these general claims in the case of Fibre Inflation where we study the strength of this transition in terms of the attractor dynamics, finding that it induces a pivot from a blue to a redshifted power spectrum which can explain the apparent large scale power loss. We compute the effects of this pivot for example cases and demonstrate how magnitude and duration of this effect depend on model parameters.

Non-thermal Dark Matter in String Compactifications

Non-thermal cosmological histories are capable of greatly increasing the available parameter space of different particle physics dark matter (DM) models and are well-motivated by the ubiquity of late-decaying gravitationally coupled scalars in UV theories like string theory. A non-thermal DM model is presented in the context of LARGE Volume Scenarios in type IIB string theory. The model is capable of addressing both the moduli-induced gravitino problem as well as the problem of overproduction of axionic dark radiation and/or DM. We show that the right abundance of neutralino DM can be obtained in both thermal under and overproduction cases for DM masses between O(GeV) to O(TeV). In the latter case the contribution of the QCD axion to the relic density is totally negligible, while in the former case it can be comparable to that of the neutralino thus resulting in a multi-component DM scenario.

The Web of D-branes at Singularities in Compact Calabi-Yau Manifolds

We present novel continuous supersymmetric transitions which take place among different chiral configurations of D3/D7 branes at singularities in the context of type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications. We find that distinct local models which admit a consistent global embedding can actually be connected to each other along flat directions by means of transitions of bulk-to-flavour branes. This has interesting interpretations in terms of brane recombination/splitting and brane/anti-brane creation/annihilation. These transitions give rise to a large web of quiver gauge theories parametrised by splitting/recombination modes of bulk branes which are not present in the non-compact case. We illustrate our results in concrete global embeddings of chiral models at a dP_0 singularity.

The type IIB string axiverse and its low-energy phenomenology

We study closed string axions in type IIB orientifold compactifications. We show that for natural values of the background fluxes the moduli stabilisation mechanism of the LARGE Volume Scenario (LVS) gives rise to an axiverse characterised by the presence of a QCD axion plus many light axion-like particles whose masses are logarithmically hierarchical. We study the phenomenological features of the LVS axiverse, deriving the masses of the axions and their couplings to matter and gauge fields. We also determine when closed string axions can solve the strong CP problem, and analyse the first explicit examples of semi-realistic models with stable moduli and a QCD axion candidate which is not eaten by an anomalous Abelian gauge boson. We discuss the impact of the choice of inflationary scenario on the LVS axiverse, and summarise the astrophysical, cosmological and experimental constraints upon it. Moreover, we show how models can be constructed with additional light axion-like particles that could explain some intriguing astrophysical anomalies, and could be searched for in the next generation of axion helioscopes and light-shining-through-a-wall experiments.

Dark Radiation in LARGE Volume Models

We consider reheating driven by volume modulus decays in the LARGE Volume Scenario. Such reheating always generates non-zero dark radiation through the decays to the axion partner, while the only competitive visible sector decays are Higgs pairs via the Giudice-Masiero term. In the framework of sequestered models where the cosmological moduli problem is absent, the simplest model with a shift-symmetric Higgs sector generates 1.56 < N_{eff} - N_{eff,SM} < 1.74. For more general cases, the known experimental bounds on N_{eff} strongly constrain the parameters and matter content of the models.

Global D-brane models with stabilised moduli and light axions

We review recent attempts to try to combine global issues of string compactifications, like moduli stabilisation, with local issues, like semi-realistic D-brane constructions. We list the main problems encountered, and outline a possible solution which allows globally consistent embeddings of chiral models. We also argue that this stabilisation mechanism leads to an axiverse. We finally illustrate our general claims in a concrete example where the Calabi-Yau manifold is explicitly described by toric geometry.

Toric K3-Fibred Calabi-Yau Manifolds with del Pezzo Divisors for String Compactifications

We analyse several explicit toric examples of compact K3-fibred Calabi-Yau three-folds which can be used for the study of string dualities and are crucial ingredients for the construction of LARGE Volume type IIB vacua with promising applications to cosmology and particle phenomenology. In order to build a phenomenologically viable model, on top of the two moduli corresponding to the base and the K3 fibre, we demand also the existence of two additional rigid divisors: the first supporting the non-perturbative effects needed to achieve moduli stabilisation, and the second allowing the presence of chiral matter on wrapped D-branes. We clarify the topology of these rigid divisors by discussing the interplay between a diagonal structure of the Calabi-Yau volume and D-terms. Del Pezzo divisors appearing in the volume form in a completely diagonal way are natural candidates for supporting non-perturbative effects and for quiver constructions, while `non-diagonal' del Pezzo and rigid but not del Pezzo divisors are particularly interesting for model building in the geometric regime. Searching through the existing list of four dimensional reflexive lattice polytopes, we find 158 examples admitting a Calabi-Yau hypersurface which is a K3 fibration with four Kähler moduli where at least one of them is a `diagonal' del Pezzo. We work out explicitly the topological details of a few examples showing how, in the case of simplicial polytopes, all the del Pezzo divisors are `diagonal', while `non-diagonal' ones appear only in the case of non-simplicial polytopes. A companion paper will use these results in the study of moduli stabilisation for globally consistent explicit Calabi-Yau compactifications with the local presence of chirality.

D-Branes at del Pezzo Singularities: Global Embedding and Moduli Stabilisation

In the context of type IIB string theory we combine moduli stabilisation and model building on branes at del Pezzo singularities in a fully consistent global compactification. By means of toric geometry, we classify all the CY manifolds with 3 < h11 < 6 which admit two identical del Pezzo singularities mapped into each other under the orientifold involution. This effective singularity hosts the visible sector containing the Standard Model while the Kaehler moduli are stabilised via a combination of D-terms, perturbative and non-perturbative effects supported on hidden sectors. We present concrete models where the visible sector, containing the Standard Model, gauge and matter content, is built via fractional D3-branes at del Pezzo singularities and all the Kaehler moduli are fixed providing an explicit realisation of both KKLT and LARGE volume scenarios, the latter with D-term uplifting to de Sitter minima. We perform the consistency checks for global embedding such as tadpole, K-theory charges and Freed-Witten anomaly cancellation. We briefly discuss phenomenological and cosmological implications of our models.

Natural Quintessence in String Theory

We introduce a natural model of quintessence in string theory where the light rolling scalar is radiatively stable and couples to Standard Model matter with weaker-than- Planckian strength. The model is embedded in an anisotropic type IIB compactification with two exponentially large extra dimensions and TeV-scale gravity. The bulk turns out to be nearly supersymmetric since the scale of the gravitino mass is of the order of the observed value of the cosmological constant. The quintessence field is a modulus parameterising the size of an internal four-cycle which naturally develops a potential of the order (gravitino mass)^4, leading to a small dark energy scale without tunings. The mass of the quintessence field is also radiatively stable since it is protected by supersymmetry in the bulk. Moreover, this light scalar couples to ordinary matter via its mixing with the volume mode. Due to the fact that the quintessence field is a flat direction at leading order, this mixing is very small, resulting in a suppressed coupling to Standard Model particles which avoids stringent fifth-force constraints. On the other hand, if dark matter is realised in terms of Kaluza-Klein states, unsuppressed couplings between dark energy and dark matter can emerge, leading to a scenario of coupled quintessence within string theory. We study the dynamics of quintessence in our set-up, showing that its main features make it compatible with observations.

De Sitter String Vacua from Dilaton-dependent Non-perturbative Effects

We consider a novel scenario for modulus stabilisation in IIB string compactifications in which the Kahler moduli are stabilised by a general set-up with two kinds of non-perturbative effects: (i) standard Kahler moduli-dependent non-perturbative effects from gaugino condensation on D7-branes or E3-instantons wrapping four-cycles in the geometric regime; (ii) dilaton-dependent non-perturbative effects from gaugino condensation on space-time filling D3-branes or E(-1)-instantons at singularities. For the LARGE Volume Scenario (LVS), the new dilaton-dependent non-perturbative effects provide a positive definite contribution to the scalar potential that can be arbitrarily tuned from fluxes to give rise to de Sitter vacua. Contrary to anti D3-branes at warped throats, this term arises from a manifestly supersymmetric effective action. In this new scenario the "uplifting" term comes from F-terms of blow-up modes resolving the singularity of the non-perturbative quiver. We discuss phenomenological and cosmological implications of this mechanism. This set-up also allows a realisation of the LVS for manifolds with zero or positive Euler number.
