Homogenization of point interactions

We consider a non-relativistic quantum particle in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d=2$ or $d = 3$, interacting with singular zero-range potentials concentrated on a large collection of points. We analyze the homogenization regime where the intensities of the singular potentials and the distances between the points simultaneously go to zero as their number grows, while the total interaction strength remains finite. Assuming that the singular potentials have negative scattering lengths and are uniformly distributed, we prove the strong resolvent convergence as $N \to \infty$ of the family of operators to a Schrödinger operator with a regular electrostatic potential. The result is obtained via $Γ$-converge of the associated quadratic forms. Moreover, in presence of an external trapping potential, the convergence is lifted to uniform resolvent sense.

Semiclassical limit of entropies and free energies

Entropy and free energy are central concepts in both statistical physics and information theory, with quantum and classical facets. In mathematics these concepts appear quite often in different contexts (dynamical systems, probability theory, von Neumann algebras, etc.). In this work, we study the von Neumann and Wehrl entropies from the point of view of semiclassical analysis. We first prove the semiclassical convergence of the von Neumann to the Wehrl entropy for quantum Gibbs states (thermal equilibrium), after a suitable renormalization has been taken into account. Then, we show that, in the same limit, the free energy functional defined with the Wehrl entropy $ Γ-$converges to its classical counterpart, so implying convergence of the minima and the associated minimizers.

Pauli Hamiltonians with an Aharonov-Bohm Flux

We study a two-dimensional Pauli operator describing a charged quantum particle with spin $1/2$ moving on a plane in presence of an orthogonal Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux. We classify all the admissible self-adjont realizations and give a complete picture of their spectral and scattering properties. Symmetries of the resulting Hamiltonians are also discussed, as well as their connection with the Dirac operator perturbed by an Aharonov-Bohm singularity.

Quasi-classical Limit of a Spin Coupled to a Reservoir

A spin (qubit) is in contact with a bosonic reservoir. The state of the reservoir contains a parameter {\varepsilon} interpolating between quantum and classical reservoir features. We derive the explicit expression for the time-dependent reduced spin density matrix, valid for all values of {\varepsilon} and for energy conserving interactions. We study decoherence and markovianity properties. Our main finding is that the spin decoherence is enhanced (full decoherence) when the spin is coupled to quantum reservoir states while it is dampened (partial decoherence) when coupled to classical reservoir states. The markovianity properties depend in a subtle way on the classicality parameter {\varepsilon} and on the finer details of the spin-reservoir interaction. We further examine scattering and periodicity properties for energy exchange interactions.

On the Ginzburg-Landau Energy of Corners

It is a well known fact that the geometry of a superconducting sample influences the distribution of the surface superconductivity for strong applied magnetic fields. For instance, the presence of corners induces geometric terms described through effective models in sector-like regions. We study the connection between two effective models for the offset of superconductivity and for surface superconductivity introduced in \cite{BNF} and \cite{CG2}, respectively. We prove that the transition between the two models is continuous with respect to the magnetic field strength, and, as a byproduct, we deduce the existence of a minimizer at the threshold for both effective problems. Furthermore, as a consequence, we disprove a conjecture stated in \cite{CG2} concerning the dependence of the corner energy on the angle close to the threshold.

Deficiency indices for singular magnetic Schrödinger operators

We show that the deficiency indices of magnetic Schrödinger operators with several local singularities can be computed in terms of the deficiency indices of operators carrying just one singularity each. We discuss some applications to physically relevant operators.

Schrödinger operators with multiple Aharonov-Bohm fluxes

We study the Schrödinger operator describing a two-dimensional quantum particle moving in presence of $ N \geqslant 1 $ Aharonov-Bohm magnetic fluxes. We classify all the self-adjont realizations of such an operator, providing an explicit characterization of their domains and actions. Moreover, we examine their spectral and scattering properties, proving in particular the existence and completeness of wave operators in relation with the free dynamics.

Derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii Theory for Interacting Fermions in a Trap

We study a dilute gas of interacting fermions at temperature $T=0$ and chemical potential $μ\in \mathbb{R}$. The particles are trapped by an external potential, and they interact via a microscopic attractive two-body potential with a two-body bound state. We prove the emergence of the macroscopic Gross-Pitaevskii theory as first-order contribution to the BCS energy functional in the regime of vanishing micro-to-macro scale parameter.

Quasi-Classical Spin-Boson Models

In this short note we study Spin-Boson Models from the Quasi-Classical standpoint. In the Quasi-Classical limit, the field becomes macroscopic while the particles it interacts with, they remain quantum. As a result, the field becomes a classical environment that drives the particle system with an explicit effective dynamics.

Effects of Corners in Surface Superconductivity

We study the Ginzburg-Landau functional describing an extreme type-II superconductor wire with cross section with finitely many corners at the boundary. We derive the ground state energy asymptotics up to $ o(1) $ errors in the surface superconductivity regime, i.e., between the second and third critical fields. We show that, compared to the case of smooth domains, each corner provides an additional contribution of order $ \mathcal{O}(1) $ depending on the corner opening angle. The corner energy is in turn obtained from an implicit model problem in an infinite wedge-like domain with fixed magnetic field. We also prove that such an auxiliary problem is well-posed and its ground state energy bounded and, finally, state a conjecture about its explicit dependence on the opening angle of the sector.

Magnetic Perturbations of Anyonic and Aharonov-Bohm Schrödinger Operators

We study the Hamiltonian describing two anyons moving in a plane in presence of an external magnetic field and identify a one-parameter family of self-adjoint realizations of the corresponding Schrödinger operator. We also discuss the associated model describing a quantum particle immersed in a magnetic field with a local Aharonov-Bohm singularity. For a special class of magnetic potentials, we provide a complete classification of all possible self-adjoint extensions.

Almost Flat Angles in Surface Superconductivity

Type-II superconductivity is known to persist close to the sample surface in presence of a strong magnetic field. As a consequence, the ground state energy in the Ginzburg-Landau theory is approximated by an effective one-dimensional model. As shown in [CG2], the presence of corners on the surface affects the energy of the sample with a non-trivial contribution. In [CG2], the two-dimensional model problem providing the corner energy is implicitly identified and, although no explicit dependence of the energy on the corner opening angle is derived, a conjecture about its form is proposed. We study here such a conjecture and confirm it, at least to leading order, for corners with almost flat opening angle.

Ground State Properties in the Quasi-Classical Regime

We study the ground state energy and ground states of systems coupling non-relativistic quantum particles and force-carrying Bose fields, such as radiation, in the quasi-classical approximation. The latter is very useful whenever the force-carrying field has a very large number of excitations, and thus behaves in a semiclassical way, while the non-relativistic particles, on the other hand, retain their microscopic features. We prove that the ground state energy of the fully microscopic model converges to the one of a nonlinear quasi-classical functional depending on both the particles' wave function and the classical configuration of the field. Equivalently, this energy can be interpreted as the lowest energy of a Pekar-like functional with an effective nonlinear interaction for the particles only. If the particles are confined, the ground state of the microscopic system converges as well, to a probability measure concentrated on the set of minimizers of the quasi-classical energy.

Surface Effects in Superconductors with Corners

We review some recent results on the phenomenon of surface superconductivity in the framework of Ginzburg-Landau theory for extreme type-II materials. In particular, we focus on the response of the superconductor to a strong longitudinal magnetic field in the regime where superconductivity survives only along the boundary of the wire. We derive the energy and density asymptotics for samples with smooth cross section, up to curvature-dependent terms. Furthermore, we discuss the corrections in presence of corners at the boundary of the sample.

Stability of the standing waves of the concentrated NLSE in dimension two

In this paper we will continue the analysis of two dimensional Schrödinger equation with a fixed, pointwise, nonlinearity started in [2, 13]. In this model, the occurrence of a blow-up phenomenon has two peculiar features: the energy threshold under which all solutions blow up is strictly negative and coincides with the infimum of the energy of the standing waves; there is no critical power nonlinearity, i.e., for every power there exist blow-up solutions. Here we study the stability properties of stationary states to verify whether the anomalies mentioned before have any counterpart on the stability features.

Blow-up for the pointwise NLS in dimension two: absence of critical power

We consider the Schrödinger equation in dimension two with a fixed, pointwise, focusing nonlinearity and show the occurrence of a blow-up phenomenon with two peculiar features: first, the energy threshold under which all solutions blow up is strictly negative and coincides with the infimum of the energy of the standing waves. Second, there is no critical power nonlinearity, i.e. for every power there exist blow-up solutions. This last property is uncommon among the conservative Schrödinger equations with local nonlinearity.

Validity of the spin-wave approximation for the free energy of the Heisenberg ferromagnet

We consider the quantum ferromagnetic Heisenberg model in three dimensions, for all spins $S\geq 1/2$. We rigorously prove the validity of the spin-wave approximation for the excitation spectrum, at the level of the first non-trivial contribution to the free energy at low temperatures. Our proof comes with explicit, constructive upper and lower bounds on the error term. It uses in an essential way the bosonic formulation of the model in terms of the Holstein-Primakoff representation. In this language, the model describes interacting bosons with a hard-core on-site repulsion and a nearest-neighbor attraction. This attractive interaction makes the lower bound on the free energy particularly tricky: the key idea there is to prove a differential inequality for the two-particle density, which is thereby shown to be smaller than the probability density of a suitably weighted two-particle random process on the lattice.

Vortex patterns in the almost-bosonic anyon gas

We study theoretically and numerically the ground state of a gas of 2D abelian anyons in an external trapping potential. We treat anyon statistics in the magnetic gauge picture, perturbatively around the bosonic end. This leads to a mean-field energy functional, whose ground state displays vortex lattices similar to those found in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. A crucial difference is however that the vortex density is proportional to the underlying matter density of the gas.
