Existence of Solutions for time-dependent fractional Kohn-Sham Equations

We consider time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations in dimension $3$ with a fractional dispersion relation $(1-\Delta)^s$, $s\in(0,\frac32)$, and a class of interaction terms including, in particular, external potentials, internal potentials associated to Hartree-type non-linearities, and exchange terms described by energy subcritical pure-power non-linearities. We prove the local existence of weak solutions in $H^s$ using an approximation procedure regularizing the non-linearities. Assuming that the interaction energies can be controlled by the kinetic energy, we show that the solutions can be extended to global solutions using energy estimates. If $s\in[1,\frac32)$, we establish in addition the well-posedness of the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations using Strichartz estimates.

Bosonization of Noise Effects in Nonlocal Quantum Dynamics

Quantum systems that interact non-locally with an environment are paradigms for exploring collective phenomena. They naturally emerge in various physical contexts involving long-range, many-body interactions. We consider a general class of such open systems characterized by a coupling to the environment which is inversely proportional to the square root of the environment size. We show that the induced system dynamics has a universal bosonic nature: the same evolution arises from coupling the system to a collection of noninteracting bosonic modes, independently of the microscopic structure of the original environment. This emergent "bosonization" of the environment's influence results from the scaling of the coupling in the thermodynamic limit and is a manifestation of the quantum central limit theorem. While the effect has been observed in specific models before, we show that it is, in fact, a universal feature.

Quantum systems coupled to environments via mean field interactions

We show that when a quantum system is coupled to an environment in a mean field way, then its effective dynamics is governed by a unitary group with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. The time-dependent modification of the bare system Hamiltonian is given by an explicit term involving the reservoir state. We show that entanglement within the system state is not changed during the dynamics. Our results hold for arbitrary strengths of the system-environment coupling, and for finite or infinite dimensional systems. As an application we show that the qualitative dynamical features of an $N$-body system can be altered drastically by the contact with the environment. For instance, bound states can turn into scattering states and vice-versa.

Quasi-classical Limit of a Spin Coupled to a Reservoir

A spin (qubit) is in contact with a bosonic reservoir. The state of the reservoir contains a parameter {\varepsilon} interpolating between quantum and classical reservoir features. We derive the explicit expression for the time-dependent reduced spin density matrix, valid for all values of {\varepsilon} and for energy conserving interactions. We study decoherence and markovianity properties. Our main finding is that the spin decoherence is enhanced (full decoherence) when the spin is coupled to quantum reservoir states while it is dampened (partial decoherence) when coupled to classical reservoir states. The markovianity properties depend in a subtle way on the classicality parameter {\varepsilon} and on the finer details of the spin-reservoir interaction. We further examine scattering and periodicity properties for energy exchange interactions.
