Even-parity black hole perturbations in Minimal Theory of Bigravity

We study even-parity black hole perturbations in Minimal Theory of Bigravity (MTBG). We consider the Schwarzschild solution written in the spatially-flat coordinates in the self-accelerating branch as the background solution. We clarify the gauge transformations for the $\ell=0$, $1$, and $\geq2$ modes with $\ell$ being the angular multipole moments under the joint foliation-preserving diffeomorphism transformation. Requiring that the asymptotic regions in the physical and fiducial sectors share the same Minkowski vacua, the solution to the $\ell=0$ perturbations can be absorbed by a redefinition of the Schwarzschild background. In order to analyze the $\ell=1$ and $\geq 2$ modes, for simplicity we focus on the effectively massless case, where the constant parameter measuring the ratio of the proper times between the two sectors is set to unity and the effective mass terms in the equations of motion vanish. We also find that as a particular solution all the $\ell=1$ perturbations vanish by imposing their regularity at spatial infinity. For each of the $\ell\geq 2$ modes, in the effectively massless case, we highlight the existence of the expected two propagating modes and four instantaneous modes.

Minimally modified gravity with auxiliary constraints formalism

We investigate the possibility of reducing the number of degrees of freedom (d.o.f.) starting from generic metric theories of gravity by introducing multiple auxiliary constraints (ACs), under the restriction of retaining spatial covariance as a gauge symmetry. Arbitrary numbers of scalar-, vector- and tensor-type ACs are considered a priori, yet we find that no vector- and tensor-type constraints should be introduced, and that scalar-type ACs should be no more than four for the purpose of constructing minimally modified gravity (MMG) theories which propagate only two tensorial d.o.f., like general relativity (GR). Through a detailed Hamiltonian analysis, we exhaust all the possible classifications of ACs and find out the corresponding minimalizing and symmetrizing conditions for obtaining the MMG theories. In particular, no condition is required in the case of four ACs, hence in this case the theory can couple with matter consistently and naturally. To illustrate our formalism, we build a concrete model for this specific case by using the Cayley-Hamilton theorem and derive the dispersion relation of the gravitational waves, which is subject to constraints from the observations.

Gravitational collapse and odd-parity black hole perturbations in Minimal Theory of Bigravity

In the former part, we study the gravitational collapse of pressureless dust and find special solutions, where, in both the physical and fiducial sectors, the exterior and interior spacetime geometries are given by the Schwarzschild spacetimes and the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universes dominated by pressureless dust, respectively, with specific time slicings. In the case where the Lagrange multipliers are trivial and have no jump across the matter interfaces in both the physical and fiducial sectors, the junction conditions across them remain the same as those in general relativity (GR). For simplicity, we foliate the interior geometry by homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes. For a spatially flat interior universe, we foliate the exterior geometry by a time-independent flat space, while for a spatiallycurved interior universe, we foliate the exterior geometry by a time-independent space with deficit solid angle. Despite the rather restrictive choice of foliations, we find interesting classes of exact solutions that represent gravitational collapse in MTBG. In the spatially flat case, under a certain tuning of the initial condition, we find exact solutions of matter collapse in which the two sectors evolve independently. In the spatially closed case, once the matter energy densities and the Schwarzschild radii are tuned between the two sectors, we find exact solutions that correspond to the Oppenheimer-Snyder model in GR. In the latter part, we study odd-parity perturbations of the Schwarzschild$-$de Sitter solutions written in the spatially flat coordinates. For the higher-multipole modes $\ell\geq2$, we find that, in general, the system reduces to that of four physical modes, where two of them are dynamical and the remaining two are shadowy, i.e., satisfying only elliptic equations.

Static and spherically symmetric general relativity solutions in Minimal Theory of Bigravity

We investigate static and spherically symmetric solutions in the Minimal Theory of Bigravity (MTBG). First, we show that a pair of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes with different cosmological constants and black hole masses written in the spatially-flat Gullstrand-Painlevé (GP) coordinates is a solution in the self-accelerating branch of MTBG, while it cannot be a solution in the normal branch. We then illustrate how Schwarzschild-de Sitter solutions can become compatible with the normal branch when using different coordinates. We also confirm that the self-accelerating branch of MTBG admits static and spherically symmetric general relativity solutions with matter written in the spatially-flat coordinates, including neutron stars with arbitrary matter equations of state. Finally, we show that in the self-accelerating branch nontrivial solutions are given by the Schwarzschild-de Sitter metrics written in nonstandard coordinates.

Minimal Theory of Bigravity: construction and cosmology

Following the path of minimalism in alternative theories of gravity, we construct the "Minimal Theory of Bigravity" (MTBG), a theory of two interacting spin-2 fields that propagates only four local degrees of freedom instead of the usual seven ones and that allows for the same homogeneous and isotropic cosmological solutions as in Hassan-Rosen bigravity (HRBG). Starting from a precursor theory that propagates six local degrees of freedom, we carefully choose additional constraints to eliminate two of them to construct the theory. Investigating the cosmology of MTBG, we find that it accommodates two different branches of homogeneous and isotropic background solutions, equivalent on-shell to the two branches that are present in HRBG. Those branches in MTBG differ however from the HRBG ones at the perturbative level, are both perfectly healthy and do not exhibit strong coupling issues nor ghost instabilities. In the so-called self-accelerating branch, characterized by the presence of an effective cosmological constant, the scalar and vector sectors are the same as in General Relativity (GR). In the so-called normal branch, the scalar sector exhibits non-trivial phenomenology, while its vector sector remains the same as in GR. In both branches, the tensor sector exhibits the usual HRBG features: an effective mass term and oscillations of the gravitons. Therefore MTBG provides a stable nonlinear completion of the cosmology in HRBG.

Minimally modified gravity with an auxiliary constraint: a Hamiltonian construction

Working directly with a general Hamiltonian for the spacetime metric with the $3+1$ decomposition and keeping only the spatial covariance, we investigate the possibility of reducing the number of degrees of freedom by introducing an auxiliary constraint. The auxiliary constraint is considered as part of the definition of the theory. Through a general Hamiltonian analysis, we find the conditions for the Hamiltonian as well as for the auxiliary constraint, under which the theory propagates two tensorial degrees of freedom only. The class of theories satisfying these conditions can be viewed as a new construction for the type-II minimally modified gravity theories, which propagate the same degrees of freedom of but are not equivalent to general relativity in the vacuum. We also illustrate our formalism by a concrete example, and derive the dispersion relation for the gravitational waves, which can be constrained by observations.

Minimally Modified Gravity fitting Planck data better than $Λ$CDM

We study the phenomenology of a class of minimally modified gravity theories called $f(\mathcal{H})$ theories, in which the usual general relativistic Hamiltonian constraint is replaced by a free function of it. After reviewing the construction of the theory and a consistent matter coupling, we analyze the dynamics of cosmology at the levels of both background and perturbations, and present a concrete example of the theory with a $3$-parameter family of the function $f$. Finally, we compare this example model to Planck data as well as some later-time probes, showing that such a realization of $f(\mathcal{H})$ theories fits the data significantly better than the standard $Λ$CDM model, in particular by modifying gravity at intermediate redshifts, $z\simeq743$.

Constant roll and primordial black holes

The constant-roll inflation with small positive value of the constant-roll parameter $β\equiv \frac{\ddotϕ}{H\dotϕ}={\rm const.}$ has been known to produce a slightly red-tilted curvature power spectrum compatible with the current observational constraints. In this work, we shed light on the constant-roll inflation with negative $β$ and investigate how a stage of constant-roll inflation may realize the growth in the primordial curvature power spectrum necessary to produce a peaked spectrum of primordial black hole abundance. We first review the behavior of constant-roll models in the range of parameters $-\frac32<β<0$, which allows for a constant-roll attractor stage generating a blue-tilted curvature power spectrum without superhorizon growth. As a concrete realization, we consider a potential with two slow-roll stages, separated by the constant-roll stage, in a way that satisfies the current constraints on the power spectrum and the primordial black hole abundance. The model can produce primordial black holes as all dark matter, LIGO-Virgo events, or OGLE microlensing events. Due to the range of different scalar tilts allowed by the constant-roll potential, this construction is particularly robust and testable by future observations.

On the absence of conformally flat slicings of the Kerr spacetime

This work investigates the possibility of achieving a conformally flat slicing of the Kerr spacetime. We consider a hypersurface of the form $t = F(r,θ,a)$, where $(t,r,θ,ϕ)$ are the Boyer-Lindquist coordinates, solve for a vanishing Cotton-York tensor of the induced metric order by order in the spin parameter $a$, and show that the procedure fails at the fifth order. We also prove that no coordinate change can induce a spatially flat recasting of the Kerr(-de Sitter) metric, beyond linear order in $a$, adopting a more general ansatz depending on $ϕ$.

Phenomenology in type-I minimally modified gravity

We study cosmology in a class of minimally modified gravity (MMG) with two local gravitational degrees of freedom. We classify modified gravity theories into type-I and type-II: theories of type-I have an Einstein frame and can be recast by change of variables as general relativity (GR) with a non-minimal matter coupling, while theories of type-II have no Einstein frame. Considering a canonical transformation of the lapse, the 3-dimensional induced metric and their conjugate momenta we generate type-I MMG. We then show that phenomenological deviations from GR, such as the speed of gravitational waves $c_T$ and the effective gravitational constant for scalar perturbations $G_{\rm eff}$, are characterized by two functions of an auxiliary variable. We study the phenomenology of several models all having $c_T=1$. We obtain a scenario with $c_T=1$ in which the effective equation-of-state parameter of dark energy is different from $-1$ even though the cosmic acceleration is caused by a bare cosmological constant, and we find that it is possible to reconstruct the theory on choosing a selected time-evolution for the effective dark energy component.

Black holes and stars in the minimal theory of massive gravity

In this letter, we show that any solution of general relativity (GR) that can be rendered spatially flat by a coordinate change is also a solution of the self-accelerating branch of the minimal theory of massive gravity (MTMG), with or without matter. We then for the first time obtain black hole and star solutions in a theory of massive gravity that agree with the corresponding solutions in GR and that are free from strong coupling issues. This in particular implies that the parametrized post-Newtonian parameters $β^{\rm PPN}$ and $γ^{\rm PPN}$ are unity, as in GR. We further show how these solutions can be embedded in a cosmological setting. While cosmological scales have already been considered in previous works, this is the first study of the phenomenology at shorter scales of the self-accelerating branch of MTMG.

Phenomenology of minimal theory of quasidilaton massive gravity

The minimal theory of quasidilaton massive gravity with or without a Horndeski-type kinetic term for the quasidilaton field propagates only three physical modes: the two massive tensor polarizations and one scalar mode. This reduced number of degrees of freedom is realized by a Lorentz symmetry violation at cosmological scales and the presence of appropriate constraints that remove unwanted modes. Vacuum cosmological solutions have been considered in a previous work, and it has been shown that the late-time de Sitter attractor is stable under inhomogeneous perturbations. In this work, we explore the stability of cosmological solutions in the presence of matter fields. Assuming for simplicity that the quasidilaton scalar is on an attractor at the level of the background, we derive stability conditions in the subhorizon limit, and find the scalar sound speeds, as well as the modification with respect to general relativity to the gravitational potential in the quasistatic approximation. We also find that the speed limit of gravitational waves coincides with the speed of light for any homogeneous and isotropic cosmological background, on or away from the attractor.

Stable cosmology in chameleon bigravity

The recently proposed chameleonic extension of bigravity theory, by including a scalar field dependence in the graviton potential, avoids several fine-tunings found to be necessary in usual massive bigravity. In particular it ensures that the Higuchi bound is satisfied at all scales, that no Vainshtein mechanism is needed to satisfy solar-system experiments, and that the strong coupling scale is always above the scale of cosmological interest all the way up to the early universe. This paper extends the previous work by presenting a stable example of cosmology in the chameleon bigravity model. We find a set of initial conditions and parameters such that the derived stability conditions on general flat Friedmann background are satisfied at all times. The evolution goes through radiation dominated, matter dominated, and de Sitter eras. We argue that the parameter space allowing for such a stable evolution may be large enough to encompass an observationally viable evolution. We also argue that our model satisfies all known constraints due to gravitational wave observations so far and thus can be considered as a unique testing ground of gravitational wave phenomenologies in bimetric theories of gravity.

Horndeski extension of the minimal theory of quasidilaton massive gravity

The minimal theory of quasidilaton massive gravity allows for a stable self-accelerating de Sitter solution in a wide range of parameters. On the other hand, in order for the theory to be compatible with local gravity tests, the fifth force due to the quasidilaton scalar needs to be screened at local scales. The present paper thus extends the theory by inclusion of a cubic Horndeski term in a way that (i) respects the quasidilaton global symmetry, that (ii) maintains the physical degrees of freedom in the theory being three, that (iii) can accommodate the Vainshtein screening mechanism and that still (iv) allows for a stable self-accelerating de Sitter solution. After adding the Horndeski term (and a k-essence type nonlinear kinetic term as well) to the precursor action, we switch to the Hamiltonian language and find a complete set of independent constraints. We then construct the minimal theory with three physical degrees of freedom by carefully adding a pair of constraints to the total Hamiltonian of the precursor theory. Switching back to the Lagrangian language, we study cosmological solutions and their stability in the minimal theory. In particular, we show that a self-accelerating de Sitter solution is stable for a wide range of parameters. Furthermore, as in the minimal theory of massive gravity, the propagation speed of the massive gravitational waves in the high momentum limit precisely agrees with the speed of light.

Minimal theory of quasidilaton massive gravity

We introduce a quasidilaton scalar field to the minimal theory of massive gravity with the Minkowski fiducial metric, in such a way that the quasidilaton global symmetry is maintained and that the theory admits a stable self-accelerating de Sitter solution. We start with a precursor theory that contains three propagating gravitational degrees of freedom without a quasidilaton scalar and introduce Stückelberg fields to covariantize its action. This makes it possible for us to formulate the quasidilaton global symmetry that mixes the Stückelberg fields and the quasidilaton scalar field. By the Hamiltonian analysis we confirm that the precursor theory with the quasidilaton scalar contains four degrees of freedom, three from the precursor massive gravity and one from the quasidilaton scalar. We further remove one propagating degree of freedom to construct the minimal quasidilaton theory with three propagating degrees of freedom, corresponding to two polarizations of gravitational waves from the minimal theory of massive gravity and one scalar from the quasidilaton field, by carefully introducing two additional constraints to the system in the Hamiltonian language. Switching to the Lagrangian language, we find self-accelerating de Sitter solutions in the minimal quasidilaton theory and analyze their stability. It is found that the self-accelerating de Sitter solution is stable in a wide range of parameters.
