Hyperbolic models and stability recognition for Coxeter groups

Given a finite rank Coxeter system, we construct a hyperbolic space by coning off the wide parabolic subcomplexes of its Davis complex. The resulting space is `stability recognizing', in the sense that stable subspaces of the Davis complex are exactly the quasigeodesically connected subspaces whose images in the coned-off space are quasiisometrically embedded. Equivalently, the coned-off space is `Morse recognizing': a quasigeodesic in the Davis complex is Morse if and only if it is quasigeodesic in the coned-off space. Furthermore, the action of the Coxeter group on this space gives its largest acylindrically hyperbolic structure.

Counting Salem numbers arising from arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds

The relationship between Salem numbers and short geodesics has been fruitful in quantitative studies of arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds, particularly in dimensions 2 and 3. In this article, we push these connections even further. The primary goals are: (1) to bound the proportion of Salem numbers of degree up to $n+1$ in the commensurability class of classical arithmetic lattices in any odd dimension $n$; (2) to improve lower bounds for the strong exponential growth of averages of multiplicities in the geodesic length spectrum of non-compact arithmetic orbifolds. In order to accomplish these goals, we bound, for a fixed square-free integer $D$, the count of Salem numbers with minimal polynomial $f$ satisfying $f(1)f(-1)=-D$ in $\mathbb{Q}^{\times}/\mathbb{Q}^{\times 2}$. To do this, we make use of results on the distribution of Salem numbers, as well as classical methods for counting Pythagorean triples and Gauss' lattice-counting argument. To this end, we give a generalization of the count of Pythagorean triples and provide an elementary proof which may be of independent interest.

Salem numbers and commensurability classes of arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds

In this article we show that given a Salem number $\lambda$, a totally real number field $k\subseteq\mathbb{Q}(\lambda+\lambda^{-1})$, and a positive integer $n\geq\mathrm{deg}_k(\lambda)-1$, there exist infinitely many commensurability classes of arithmetic hyperbolic $n$-manifolds defined over $k$ which contain a geodesic of length $\log\lambda$.

Mixed-platonic 3-manifolds

We introduce a class of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds that we call mixed-platonic, composed of regular ideal hyperbolic polyhedra of more than one type, which includes certain previously-known examples. We establish basic facts about mixed-platonic manifolds which allow us to conclude, among other things, that there is no mixed-platonic hyperbolic knot complement with hidden symmetries.

Prescribed virtual homological torsion of 3-manifolds

We prove that given any finite abelian group $A$ and any irreducible $3$-manifold $M$ with empty or toroidal boundary which is not a graph manifold there exists a finite cover $M' \to M$ so that $A$ is a direct factor in $H_1(M',\mathbb{Z})$. This generalizes results of Sun and of Friedl-Herrmann.

Virtually special embeddings of integral Lorentzian lattices

The automorphism groups of integral Lorentzian lattices act by isometries on hyperbolic space with finite covolume. In the case of reflective integral lattices, the automorphism groups are commensurable to arithmetic hyperbolic reflection groups. However, for a fixed dimension, there is only finitely many reflective integral Lorentzian lattices, and these can only occur in small dimensions. The goal of this note is to construct embeddings of low-dimensional integral Lorentzian lattices into unimodular Lorentzian lattices associated to right-angled reflection groups. As an application, we construct many discrete groups of $\mathrm{Isom}(\mathbb{H}^n)$ for small $n$ which are C-special in the sense of Haglund-Wise.

A hyperbolic counterpart to Rokhlin's cobordism theorem

The purpose of the present paper is to prove existence of super-exponentially many compact orientable hyperbolic arithmetic $n$-manifolds that are geometric boundaries of compact orientable hyperbolic $(n+1)$-manifolds, for any $n \geq 2$, thereby establishing that these classes of manifolds have the same growth rate with respect to volume as all compact orientable hyperbolic arithmetic $n$-manifolds. An analogous result holds for non-compact orientable hyperbolic arithmetic $n$-manifolds of finite volume that are geometric boundaries, for $n \geq 2$.

Reflections on trisection genus

The Heegaard genus of a 3-manifold, as well as the growth of Heegaard genus in its finite sheeted cover spaces, has extensively been studied in terms of algebraic, geometric and topological properties of the 3-manifold. This note shows that analogous results concerning the trisection genus of a smooth, orientable 4-manifold have more general answers than their counterparts for 3-manifolds. In the case of hyperbolic 4-manifolds, upper and lower bounds are given in terms of volume and a trisection of the Davis manifold is described.

Special subgroups of Bianchi groups

We determine C-special subgroups of the Bianchi groups of index bounded above by 120 by effectivising the arguments of Agol-Long-Reid. These subgroups are congruence of level 2 or 4 and retract to the free group on two generators. As a consequence, we find a C-special 20-sheeted cover of the figure-eight knot complement. We also determine C-special congruence subgroups for a family of cocompact arithmetic Kleinian groups.

Detecting essential surfaces as intersections in the character variety

We describe a family of hyperbolic knots whose character variety contain exactly two distinct components of characters of irreducible representations. The intersection points between the components carry rich topological information. In particular, these points are non-integral and detect the Seifert surface.

Small generators of cocompact arithmetic Fuchsian groups

In the study of Fuchsian groups, it is a nontrivial problem to determine a set of generators. Using a dynamical approach we construct for any cocompact arithmetic Fuchsian group a fundamental region in $\mathbf{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ from which we determine a set of small generators.

Stick index of knots and links in the cubic lattice

The cubic lattice stick index of a knot type is the least number of sticks necessary to construct the knot type in the 3-dimensional cubic lattice. We present the cubic lattice stick index of various knots and links, including all (p,p+1)-torus knots, and show how composing and taking satellites can be used to obtain the cubic lattice stick index for a relatively large infinite class of knots. Additionally, we present several bounds relating cubic lattice stick index to other known invariants.
