Long wavelength solitary waves in Hertzian chains and their properties in different nonlinearity regimes

Properties of solitary waves in pre-compressed Hertzian chains of particles are studied in the long wavelength limit using a well-known continuum model. Several main results are obtained by parameterizing the solitary waves in terms of their wave speed and their asymptotic amplitude. First, the asymptotic amplitude is shown to be directly related to the continuum sound speed, and the ratio of asymptotic amplitude to peak amplitude is shown to describe the degree of dynamical nonlinearity in the underlying discrete system. Second, an algebraic relation is derived that determines the dynamical nonlinearity ratio in terms of the ratio of the solitary wave speed to the sound speed. In particular, highly supersonic solitary waves correspond to highly nonlinear propagating pulses in weakly compressed systems, and slightly supersonic solitary waves correspond to weakly nonlinear propagating pulses in strongly compressed systems. Third, explicit formulas for the physical height, width, impulse and energy of the solitary waves are obtained in both the strongly nonlinear regime and the weakly nonlinear regime. Asymptotic expansions are used to show that in the strongly nonlinear regime, solitary waves are well-approximated by Nesterenko's compacton (having the same wave speed), while in the weakly nonlinear regime, solitary waves coincide with solitons of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, with the same wave speed. All of these results are illustrated by means of exact solitary wave solutions, including the physically important case that models a chain of spherical particles.

The equilibrium phase in heterogeneous Hertzian chains

We examine the long-term behaviour of non-integrable, energy-conserved, 1D systems of macroscopic grains interacting via a contact-only generalized Hertz potential and held between stationary walls. We previously showed that in homogeneous configurations of such systems, energy is equipartitioned at sufficiently long times, thus these systems ultimately reach thermal equilibrium. Here we expand on our previous work to show that heterogeneous configurations of grains also reach thermal equilibrium at sufficiently long times, as indicated by the calculated heat capacity. We investigate the transition to equilibrium in detail and introduce correlation functions that indicate the onset of the transition.

Travelling waves and conservation laws for highly nonlinear wave equations modelling Hertz chains

A highly nonlinear, fourth-order wave equation that models the continuum theory of long wavelength pulses in weakly compressed, discrete, homogeneous chains with a general power-law contact interaction is studied. For this wave equation, all solitary wave solutions and all nonlinear periodic wave solutions, along with all conservation laws, are derived. The solutions are explicitly parameterized in terms of the asymptotic value of the wave amplitude in the case of solitary waves and the peak of the wave amplitude in the case of nonlinear periodic waves. All cases in which the solution expressions can be stated in an explicit analytic form using elementary functions are worked out. In these cases, explicit expressions for the total energy and total momentum for all solutions are obtained as well. The derivation of the solutions uses the conservation laws combined with an energy analysis argument to reduce the wave equation directly to a separable first-order differential equation which determines the wave amplitude in terms of the travelling wave variable. This method can be applied more generally to other highly nonlinear wave equations.

Long-term behaviour of Hertzian chains between fixed walls is really equilibrium

We examine the long-term behaviour of non-integrable, energy-conserved, 1D systems of macroscopic grains interacting via a contact-only generalized Hertz potential and held between stationary walls. Existing dynamical studies showed the absence of energy equipartitioning in such systems, hence their long-term dynamics was described as quasi-equilibrium. Here we show that these systems do in fact reach thermal equilibrium at sufficiently long times, as indicated by the calculated heat capacity. This phase is described by equilibrium statistical mechanics, opening up the possibility that the machinery of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics may be used to understand the behaviour of these systems away from equilibrium.

Fluctuations in Hertz chains at equilibrium

We examine the long-term behaviour of non-integrable, energy-conserved, 1D systems of macroscopic grains interacting via a contact-only generalized Hertz potential and held between stationary walls. Existing dynamical studies showed the absence of energy equipartitioning in such systems, hence their long-term dynamics was described as quasi-equilibrium. Here we show that these systems do in fact reach thermal equilibrium at sufficiently long times, as indicated by the calculated heat capacity. As a byproduct, we show how fluctuations of system quantities, and thus the distribution functions, are influenced by the Hertz potential. In particular, the variance of the system's kinetic energy probability density function is reduced by a factor related to the contact potential.

Granular chains with soft boundaries: Slowing the transition to quasi-equilibrium

We present here a detailed numerical study of the dynamical behaviour of `soft' uncompressed grains in a granular chain where the grains interact via the intrinsically nonlinear Hertz force. It is well known that such a chain supports the formation of solitary waves (SWs). Here, however, the system response to the material properties of the grains and boundaries is further explored. In particular, we examine the details of the transition of the system from a SW phase to an equilibrium-like (or quasi-equilibrium) phase and for this reason we ignore the effects of dissipation in this study. We find that the soft walls slow the reflection of SWs at the boundaries of the system, which in turn slows the journey to quasi-equilibrium. Moreover, the increased grain-wall compression as the boundaries are softened results in fewer average grain-grain contacts at any given time in the quasi-equilibrium phase. These effects lead to increased kinetic energy fluctuations in the short term in softer systems. We conclude with a toy model which exploits the results of soft-wall systems. This toy model supports the formation of breather-like entities and may therefore be useful for localizing energy in desired places in the granular chain.

The absence of phase transition for the classical XY-model on Sierpinski pyramid with fractal dimension D=2

For the spin models with continuous symmetry on regular lattices and finite range of interactions the lower critical dimension is d=2. In two dimensions the classical XY-model displays Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition associated with unbinding of topological defects (vortices and antivortices). We perform a Monte Carlo study of the classical XY-model on Sierpinski pyramids whose fractal dimension is D=log4/log2=2 and the average coordination number per site is about 7. The specific heat does not depend on the system size which indicates the absence of long range order. From the dependence of the helicity modulus on the cluster size and on boundary conditions we draw a conclusion that in the thermodynamic limit there is no Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at any finite temperature. This conclusion is also supported by our results for linear magnetic susceptibility. The lack of finite temperature phase transition is presumably caused by the finite order of ramification of Sierpinski pyramid.
