Superfast solution of Toeplitz systems based on syzygy reduction

We present a new superfast algorithm for solving Toeplitz systems. This algorithm is based on a relation between the solution of such problems and syzygies of polynomials or moving lines. We show an explicit connection between the generators of a Toeplitz matrix and the generators of the corresponding module of syzygies. We show that this module is generated by two elements and the solution of a Toeplitz system T u=g can be reinterpreted as the remainder of a vector depending on g, by these two generators. We obtain these generators and this remainder with computational complexity O(n log^2 n) for a Toeplitz matrix of size nxn.

Toeplitz and Toeplitz-block-Toeplitz matrices and their correlation with syzygies of polynomials

In this paper, we re-investigate the resolution of Toeplitz systems $T u =g$, from a new point of view, by correlating the solution of such problems with syzygies of polynomials or moving lines. We show an explicit connection between the generators of a Toeplitz matrix and the generators of the corresponding module of syzygies. We show that this module is generated by two elements of degree $n$ and the solution of $T u=g$ can be reinterpreted as the remainder of an explicit vector depending on $g$, by these two generators.

Penalty approximation for non smooth constraints in vibroimpact

We examine the penalty approximation of the free motion of a material point in an angular domain; we choose an over-damped penalty, and we prove that if the first impact point is not at the vertex, then, the limit of the approximation exists and is described by Moreau's rule for anelastic impacts. The proofs rely on validated asymptotics and use some classical tools in the theory of dynamical systems.

A numerical scheme for impact problems

We consider a mechanical system with impact and n degrees of freedom, written in generalized coordinates. The system is not necessarily Lagrangian. The representative point of the system must remain inside a set of constraints K; the boundary of K is three times differentiable. At impact, the tangential component of the impulsion is conserved, while its normal coordinate is reflected and multiplied by a given coefficient of restitution e between 0 and 1. The orthognality is taken with respect to the natural metric in the space of impulsions. We define a numerical scheme which enables us to approximate the solutions of the Cauchy problem: this is an ad hoc scheme which does not require a systematic search for the times of impact. We prove the convergence of this numerical scheme to a solution, which yields also an existence result. Without any a priori estimates, the convergence and the existence are local; with some a priori estimates, the convergence and the existence are proved on intervals depending exclusively on these estimates. This scheme has been implemented with a trivial and a non trivial mass matrix.

The Thual-Fauve pulse: skew stabilization

It is possible to choose the parameters of a real quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation so that it possesses localized pulse-like solutions; Thual and Fauve have observed numerically that these pulses are stabilized by perturbations destroying the gradient structure of the real equation. For parameters such that the real part of the equations possesses pulses with a large shelf, we prove the existence of pulses by validated asymptotics, we find the expansion of the small eigenvalues of the operator and of their corresponding eigenvectors, and we give a sufficient condition for stabilization. This condition is generalized to any small non-gradient quintic perturbation of Ginzburg-Landau.
