Polariton parametric photoluminescence in spatially inhomogeneous systems

A general theory of polariton parametric photoluminescence in spatially inhomogeneous systems is developed. The quantum Langevin equations are solved in a generalized Bogoliubov de Gennes approximation. We apply the formalism to the specific case of a disordered microcavity. In this case, we numerically solve the equations for the coherent emission and the photoluminescence. We describe the effect of the exciton and photon disorder on the photoluminescence pattern exhibited in momentum space, finding a good agreement with the experimental observations.

Synchronized and desynchronized phases of coupled non-equilibrium exciton-polariton condensates

We theoretically analyze the synchronized and desynchronized phases of coupled non-equilibrium polariton condensates within mean field theory. An analytical condition for the existence of a synchronized phase is derived for two coupled wells. The case of many wells in a 2D disordered geometry is studied numerically. The relation to recent experiments on polariton condensation in CdTe microcavities is discussed.

Many-body physics of a quantum fluid of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity

Some recent results concerning nonlinear optics in semiconductor microcavities are reviewed from the point of view of the many-body physics of an interacting photon gas. Analogies with systems of cold atoms at thermal equilibrium are drawn, and the peculiar behaviours due to the non-equilibrium regime pointed out. The richness of the predicted behaviours shows the potentialities of optical systems for the study of the physics of quantum fluids.

The Goldstone mode of planar optical parametric oscillators

We propose an experimental setup to probe the low-lying excitation modes of a parametrically oscillating planar cavity, in particular the soft Goldstone mode which appears as a consequence of the spontaneously broken U(1) symmetry of signal/idler phase rotations. Differently from the case of thermodynamical equilibrium, the Goldstone mode of such a driven-dissipative system is an overdamped mode, whose linewidth goes to zero in the long-wavelength limit. When the phase of the signal/idler emission is pinned by an additional laser beam in the vicinity of the signal emission, the U(1) symmetry is explicitely broken and a gap opens in the Goldstone mode dispersion. This results in a dramatic broadening of the response to the probe. Quantitative predictions are given for the case of semiconductor planar cavities in the strong exciton-photon coupling regime.
