Critical behaviors of sheared frictionless granular materials near jamming transition

Critical behaviors of sheared dense and frictionless granular materials in the vicinity of the jamming transition are numerically investigated. From the extensive molecular dynamics simulation, we verify the validity of the scaling theory near the jamming transition proposed by Otsuki and Hayakawa (Prog. Theor. Phys., 121, 647 (2009)). We also clarify the critical behaviors of the shear viscosity and the pair correlation function based on both a phenomenology and the simulation.

Fluctuation relations without microscopic time reversality: Generalized Green-Kubo relation and integral fluctuation theorem for uniformly sheared granular systems

We derive the generalized Green-Kubo relation and an integral form of the fluctuation theorem that apply to uniformly sheared granular systems in which microscopic time-reversal symmetry is broken. The former relation provides an exact representation of nonequilibrium steady-state properties as the integral of the time-correlation function describing transient dynamics from an initial quiescent towards a final sheared steady state. We also investigate implications of the integral fluctuation theorem on the approach towards the steady state and on the possible form of the steady-state distribution function in terms of the excess thermodynamic function.

Universal scaling for the jamming transition

The existence of universal scaling in the vicinity of the jamming transition of sheared granular materials is predicted by a phenomenology. The critical exponents are explicitly determined, which are independent of the spatial dimension. The validity of the theory is verified by the molecular dynamics simulation.

Spatial correlations in sheared isothermal liquids : From elastic particles to granular particles

Spatial correlations for sheared isothermal elastic liquids and granular liquids are theoretically investigated. Using the generalized fluctuating hydrodynamics, correlation functions for both the microscopic scale and the macroscopic scale are obtained. The existence of the long-range correlation functions obeying power laws has been confirmed. The validity of our theoretical predictions have been verified from the molecular dynamics simulation.

Long-range correlation in sheared granular fluids

The spatial correlation function of the momentum density in the three-dimensional dilute sheared granular fluids is theoretically investigated. The existence of the long-range correlation is verified through both the analytic calculation and the numerical simulation.

Are there long-time tails in granular flows?

The long-time behaviors of the velocity autocorrelation function (VACF) for granular flows based on the optimal velocity fluid model are investigated theoretically. It is found the long-time tail of VACF disappears in a granular flow under the gravity.

Time correlation function of the shear stress in sheared particle systems

The long-time behaviors of the time correlation function $C_η(t)$ of the shear stress for three-dimensional sheared fluids are investigated theoretically. It is found that there are the cross-overs in $C_η(t)$ from $t^{-3/2}$ to $t^{-2}$ for sheared fluids of elastic particles without any thermostat, and from $t^{-3/2}$ to $t^{-5/2}$ for isothermal sheared fluids including granular fluids.

Long-time tails in freely cooling granular gases

The long-time behavior of the current auto-correlation functions for the velocity, the shear stress and the heat flux is investigated in freely cooling granular gases. It is found that the correlation functions for the velocity and the shear stress have the long-time tails obeying $τ^{-d/2}$, while the correlation function of heat flux decays as $τ^{-(d+2)/2} \exp(-ζ^* τ)$ with the dimensionless cooling rate $ζ^*$, the spatial dimension $d$ and the scaled time $τ$ in terms of the collision frequency. The result of our numerical simulation of the freely cooling granular gases is consistent with the theoretical prediction.

Finite-size scaling for non-linear rheology of fluids confined in a small space

We perform molecular dynamics simulations in order to examine the rheological transition of fluids confined in a small space. By performing finite-size scaling analysis, we demonstrate that this rheological transition results from the competition between the system size and the length scale of cooperative particle motion.

Criticality and Scaling Relations in a Sheared Granular Material

We investigate a rheological property of a dense granular material under shear. By a numerical experiment of the system with constant volume, we find a critical volume fraction at which the shear stress and the pressure behave as power-law functions of the shear strain rate. We also present a simple scaling argument that determines the power-law exponents. Using these results, we interpret a power-law behavior observed in the system under constant pressure.

An order parameter equation for the dynamic yield stress in dense colloidal suspensions

We study the dynamic yield stress in dense colloidal suspensions by analyzing the time evolution of the pair distribution function for colloidal particles interacting through a Lennard-Jones potential. We find that the equilibrium pair distribution function is unstable with respect to a certain anisotropic perturbation in the regime of low temperature and high density. By applying a bifurcation analysis to a system near the critical state at which the stability changes, we derive an amplitude equation for the critical mode. This equation is analogous to order parameter equations used to describe phase transitions. It is found that this amplitude equation describes the appearance of the dynamic yield stress, and it gives a value of 2/3 for the shear thinning exponent. This value is related to the mean field value of the critical exponent $δ$ in the Ising model.

Memory effect on the formation of drying cracks

We propose a model for the formation of drying cracks in a viscoplastic material. In this model, we observe that when an external force is applied to a viscoplastic material before drying, the material memorizes the effect of the force as a plastic deformation. The formation of the drying cracks is influenced by this plastic deformation. This outcome clarifies the result of a recent experiments which demonstrated that a drying fracture pattern on a powder-water mixture depends on the manner in which an external force is applied before drying. We analytically express the position of the first crack as a function of the strength of an external force applied before drying. From the expression, we predict that there exists a threshold on the strength of the force. When the force applied is smaller than the threshold, the first crack is formed at the center of the mixture; however, when the force applied exceeds the threshold, the position of the first crack deviates from the center. The extent of the deviation increases as a linear function of the difference between the strength of the force and the threshold.

Anomalous time correlation in two-dimensional driven diffusive systems

We study the time correlation function of a density field in two-dimensional driven diffusive systems within the framework of fluctuating hydrodynamics. It is found that the time correlation exhibits power-law behavior in an intermediate time regime in the case that the fluctuation-dissipation relation is violated and that the power-law exponent depends on the extent of this violation. We obtain this result by employing a renormalization group method to treat a logarithmic divergence in time.
