Orbital stability of the black soliton for the quintic Gross-Pitaevskii equation

In this work, a rigorous proof of the orbital stability of the black soliton solution of the quintic Gross-Pitaevskii equation in one spatial dimension is obtained. We first build and show explicitly black and dark soliton solutions and we prove that the corresponding Ginzburg-Landau energy is coercive around them by using some orthogonality conditions related to perturbations of the black and dark solitons. The existence of suitable perturbations around black and dark solitons satisfying the required orthogonality conditions is deduced from an Implicit Function Theorem. In fact, these perturbations involve dark solitons with sufficiently small speeds and some proportionality factors ari\-sing from the explicit expression of their spatial derivative. We are also able to control the evolution of the modulation parameters along the quintic Gross-Pitaevskii flow by estimating their growth in time. As a direct consequence, we also prove the orbital stability of the dark soliton in a small speed interval.

Stability of mKdV breathers on the half-line

In this paper we study the stability problem for mKdV breathers on the left half-line. We are able to show that leftwards moving breathers, initially located far away from the origin, are strongly stable for the problem posed on the left half-line, when assuming homogeneous boundary conditions. The proof involves a Lyapunov functional which is almost conserved by the mKdV flow once we control some boundary terms which naturally arise.

Breather Solutions to the Cubic Whitham Equation

We are concerned with numerical approximations of breather solutions for the cubic Whitham equation which arises as a water-wave model for interfacial waves. The model combines strong nonlinearity with the non-local character of the water-wave problem. The equation is non-integrable as suggested by the inelastic interaction of solitary waves. As a non local model, it generalizes, in the low frequency limit, the well known modified KdV (mKdV) equation which is a completely-integrable model. The mKdV equation has breather solutions, i.e. periodic in time and localized in space biparametric solutions. It was recently shown that these breather solutions appear naturally as ground states of invariant integrals, suggesting that such structures may also exist in non-integrable models, at least in an approximate sense. In this work, we present numerical evidence that in the non-integrable case of the cubic Whitham equation, breather solutions may also exist.

Decay for Skyrme wave maps

We consider the decay problem for global solutions of the Skyrme and Adkins-Nappi equations. We prove that the energy associated to any bounded energy solution of the Skyrme (or Adkins-Nappi) equation decays to zero outside the light cone (in the radial coordinate). Furthermore, we prove that suitable polynomial weighted energies of any small solution decays to zero when these energies are bounded. The proof consists of finding three new virial type estimates, one for the exterior of the light cone, based on the energy of the solution, and a more subtle virial identity for the weighted energies, based on a modification of momentum type quantities.

Stability and instability of breathers in the $U(1)$ Sasa-Satusuma and Nonlinear Schrödinger models

We consider the Sasa-Satsuma (SS) and Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations posed along the line, in 1+1 dimensions. Both equations are canonical integrable $U(1)$ models, with solitons, multi-solitons and breather solutions, see Yang for instance. For these two equations, we recognize four distinct localized breather modes: the Sasa-Satsuma for SS, and for NLS the Satsuma-Yajima, Kuznetsov-Ma and Peregrine breathers. Very little is known about the stability of these solutions, mainly because of their complex structure, which does not fit into the classical soliton behavior by Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss. In this paper we find the natural $H^2$ variational characterization for each of them, and prove that Sasa-Satsuma breathers are $H^2$ nonlinearly stable, improving the linear stability property previously proved by Pelinovsky and Yang. Moreover, in the SS case, we provide an alternative understanding of the SS solution as a breather, and not only as an embedded soliton. The method of proof is based in the use of a $H^2$ based Lyapunov functional, in the spirit of the first and third authors, extended this time to the vector-valued case. We also provide another rigorous justification of the instability of the remaining three nonlinear modes (Satsuma-Yajima, Peregrine y Kuznetsov-Ma), based in the study of their corresponding linear variational structure (as critical points of a suitable Lyapunov functional), and complementing the instability results recently proved e.g. in a paper by the third author.

Review on the stability of the Peregrine and related breathers

In this note, we review stability properties in energy spaces of three important nonlinear Schrödinger breathers: Peregrine, Kuznetsov-Ma, and Akhmediev. More precisely, we show that these breathers are unstable according to a standard definition of stability. Suitable Lyapunov functionals are described, as well as their underlying spectral properties. As an immediate consequence of the first variation of these functionals, we also present the corresponding nonlinear ODEs fulfilled by these NLS breathers. The notion of global stability for each breather above mentioned is finally discussed. Some open questions are also briefly mentioned.

On the asymptotic stability of the sine-Gordon kink in the energy space

We consider the sine-Gordon (SG) equation in 1+1 dimensions. The kink is a static, non-symmetric exact solution to SG, stable in the energy space $H^1\times L^2$. It is well-known that the linearized operator around the kink has a simple kernel and no internal modes. However, it possesses an odd resonance at the bottom of the continuum spectrum, deeply related to the existence of the (in)famous wobbling kink, an explicit periodic-in-time solution of SG around the kink that contradicts the asymptotic stability of the kink in the energy space. In this paper, we further investigate the influence of resonances in the asymptotic stability question. We also discuss the relationship between breathers, wobbling kinks and resonances in the SG setting. By gathering Bäcklund transformations (BT) and Virial estimates around odd perturbations of the vacuum solution, we first identify the manifold of initial data around zero under which BTs are related to the wobbling kink solution. It turns out that (even) small breathers are deeply related to odd perturbations around the kink, including the wobbling kink itself. As a consequence of this result, using BTs we can construct a smooth manifold of initial data close to the kink, for which there is asymptotic stability in the energy space. The initial data has spatial symmetry of the form (kink + odd, even), non-resonant in principle, and not preserved by the flow. This asymptotic stability property holds despite the existence of wobbling kinks in SG. We also show that wobbling kinks are orbitally stable under odd data, and clarify some interesting connections between SG and $ϕ^4$ at the level of linear Bäcklund transformations.

On the ill-posedness of the 5th-order Gardner equation

We present ill-posedness results for the initial value problem (IVP) of the 5th-order Gardner equation. We use new breather solutions discovered for this higher order Gardner equation to measure the regularity of the Cauchy problem in Sobolev spaces $H^s$. We find the sharp Sobolev index under which the local well-posedness of the problem is lost, meaning that the dependence of 5th order Gardner solutions upon initial data fails to be continuous.

The Akhmediev Breather is unstable

In this note, we give a rigorous proof that the NLS periodic Akhmediev breather is unstable. The proof follows the ideas in [17], in the sense that a suitable modification of the Stokes wave is the global attractor of the local Akhmediev dynamics for sufficiently large time, and therefore the latter cannot be stable in any suitable finite energy periodic Sobolev space.

Dynamics of breathers in the Gardner hierarchy: universality of the variational characterization

We present a new variational characterization of breather solutions of any equation of the \emph{focusing} Gardner hierarchy. This hierarchy is characterized by a nonnegative index $n$, and $2n+1$ represents the order of the corresponding PDE member. In this paper, we first show the existence of such breathers, and that they are solutions of the (2n+1)th-order Gardner equation. Then we prove a \emph{variational universality property}, in the sense that all these breather solutions satisfy the \emph{same} fourth order stationary elliptic ODE, regardless the order of the hierarchy member. This fact also characterizes them as critical points of the same Lyapunov functional, that we also construct here. As by product of our approach, we find breather solutions of the hierarchy of (2n+1)th-order mKdV equations, as well as a respective characterization of them as solutions of a fourth order stationary elliptic ODE. We also extend part of these results to the periodic setting, presenting new breather solutions for the 5th and 7th mKdV members of the hierarchy. Finally, we prove ill-posedness results for the whole Gardner hierarchy, by using appropiately their breather solutions.

Global solutions and stability properties of the 5th order Gardner equation

In this work, we deal with the initial value problem of the 5th-order Gardner equation in $\mathbb{R}$, presenting the local well-posedness result in $H^2(\mathbb{R})$. As a consequence of the local result, in addition to $H^2$-energy conservation law, we are able to prove the global well-posedness result in $H^2(\mathbb{R})$. Finally, we present a stability result for 5th order Gardner breather solution in the Sobolev space $H^2(\mathbb{R})$.

On global solutions to some non-Markovian quantum kinetic models of Fokker-Planck type

In this paper, global well-posedness of the non-Markovian Unruh-Zurek and Hu-Paz-Zhang master equations with nonlinear electrostatic coupling is demonstrated. They both consist of a Wigner-Poisson like equation subjected to a dissipative Fokker-Planck mechanism with time-dependent coefficients of integral type, which makes necessary to take into account the full history of the open quantum system under consideration to describe its present state. From a mathematical viewpoint this feature makes particularly elaborated the calculation of the propagators that take part of the corresponding mild formulations, as well as produces rather strong decays near the initial time ($t=0$) of the magnitudes involved, which would be reflected in the subsequent derivation of a priori estimates and a significant lack of Sobolev regularity when compared with their Markovian counterparts. The existence of local-in-time solutions is deduced from a Banach fixed point argument, while global solvability follows from appropriate kinetic energy estimates.

On the dynamics of zero-speed solutions for Camassa-Holm type equations

In this paper we consider globally defined solutions of Camassa-Holm (CH) type equations outside the well-known nonzero speed, peakon region. These equations include the standard CH and Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equations, as well as nonintegrable generalizations such as the $b$-family, elastic rod and BBM equations. Having globally defined solutions for these models, we introduce the notion of \emph{zero-speed and breather solutions}, i.e., solutions that do not decay to zero as $t\to +\infty$ on compact intervals of space. We prove that, under suitable decay assumptions, such solutions do not exist because the identically zero solution is the global attractor of the dynamics, at least in a spatial interval of size $|x|\lesssim t^{1/2-}$ as $t\to+\infty$. As a consequence, we also show scattering and decay in CH type equations with long range nonlinearities. Our proof relies in the introduction of suitable Virial functionals à la Martel-Merle in the spirit of the works by one of us and Ponce, and Kowalczyk-Martel adapted to CH, DP and BBM type dynamics, one of them placed in $L^1_x$, and a second one in the energy space $H^1_x$. Both functionals combined lead to local in space decay to zero in $|x|\lesssim t^{1/2-}$ as $t\to+\infty$. Our methods do not rely on the integrable character of the equation, applying to other nonintegrable families of CH type equations as well.

Nonlinear stability of higher order mKdV breathers

We are interested in stability results for breather solutions of the 5th, 7th and 9th order mKdV equations. We show that these higher order mKdV breathers are stable in $H^2(\R)$, in the same way as \emph{classical} mKdV breathers. We also show that breather solutions of the 5th, 7th and 9th order mKdV equations satisfy the same stationary fourth order nonlinear elliptic equation as the mKdV breather, independently of the order, 5th, 7th or 9th, considered.

Nonlinear stability of Gardner breathers

We show that breather solutions of the Gardner equation, a natural generalization of the KdV and mKdV equations, are $H^2(\mathbb{R})$ stable. Through a variational approach, we characterize Gardner breathers as minimizers of a new Lyapunov functional and we study the associated spectral problem, through $(i)$ the analysis of the spectrum of explicit linear systems (\emph{spectral stability}), and $(ii)$ controlling degenerated directions by using low regularity conservation laws.

Almost sharp nonlinear scattering in one-dimensional Born-Infeld equations arising in nonlinear Electrodynamics

We study decay of small solutions of the Born-Infeld equation in 1+1 dimensions, a quasilinear scalar field equation modeling nonlinear electromagnetism, as well as branes in String theory and minimal surfaces in Minkowski space-times. From the work of Whitham, it is well-known that there is no decay because of arbitrary solutions traveling to the speed of light just as linear wave equation. However, even if there is no global decay in 1+1 dimensions, we are able to show that all globally small $H^{s+1}\times H^s$, $s>\frac12$ solutions do decay to the zero background state in space, inside a strictly proper subset of the light cone. We prove this result by constructing a Virial identity related to a momentum law, in the spirit of works \cite{KMM,KMM1}, as well as a Lyapunov functional that controls the $\dot H^1 \times L^2$ energy.

On the variational structure of breather solutions

In this paper we give a systematic and simple account that put in evidence that many breather solutions of integrable equations satisfy suitable variational elliptic equations, which also implies that the stability problem reduces in some sense to $(i)$ the study of the spectrum of explicit linear systems (\emph{spectral stability}), and $(ii)$ the understanding of how bad directions (if any) can be controlled using low regularity conservation laws. We exemplify this idea in the case of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV), Gardner, and sine-Gordon (SG) equations. Then we perform numerical simulations that confirm, at the level of the spectral problem, our previous rigorous results, where we showed that mKdV breathers are $H^2$ and $H^1$ stable, respectively. In a second step, we also discuss the Gardner and the Sine-Gordon cases, where the spectral study of a fourth-order linear matrix system is the key element to show stability. Using numerical methods, we confirm that all spectral assumptions leading to the $H^2\times H^1$ stability of SG breathers are numerically satisfied, even in the ultra-relativistic, singular regime. In a second part, we study the periodic mKdV case, where a periodic breather is known from the work of Kevrekidis et al. We rigorously show that these breathers satisfy a suitable elliptic equation, and we also show numerical spectral stability. However, we also identify the source of nonlinear instability in the case described in Kevrekidis et al. Finally, we present a new class of breather solution for mKdV, believed to exist from geometric considerations, and which is periodic in time and space, but has nonzero mean, unlike standard breathers.

Well-posedness and stability results for the Gardner equation

In this article we present local well-posedness results in the classical Sobolev space H^s(R) with s > 1/4 for the Cauchy problem of the Gardner equation, overcoming the problem of the loss of the scaling property of this equation. We also cover the energy space H^1(R) where global well-posedness follows from the conservation laws of the system. Moreover, we construct solitons of the Gardner equation explicitly and prove that, under certain conditions, this family is orbitally stable in the energy space.
