Symmetric Jacobi Polynomials on a Triangle and Their Spectral Algebra

We study a family of symmetric orthogonal polynomials on the unit triangle associated with the weight \[ w_{α,γ,κ}(x,y) = (xy)^α(1-x-y)^γ|x-y|^{2κ+1}, \quad α,γ,κ>-1,\quad α+κ>-\frac32. \] We construct the corresponding monic symmetric orthogonal basis on the simplex chamber and prove that its elements are eigenfunctions of a formally self-adjoint second-order differential operator \(\mathcal D_1^{α,γ,κ}\). A pair of adjoint ladder operators yields a second operator of order two \(\mathcal D_2^{α,κ}\) with the same eigenfunctions. We also obtain an explicit representation of the basis in terms of one-variable Jacobi polynomials and compute its squared norms. After passing to the elementary symmetric variables, we determine the full algebra of linear partial differential operators with real polynomial coefficients having the transformed polynomials as eigenfunctions. Every such operator can be written uniquely as a polynomial in \(\mathcal D_1^{α,γ,κ}\) and \(\mathcal D_2^{α,κ}\); consequently, this algebra is isomorphic to the real polynomial ring in two variables.

Polynomial interpolation--regression on the sphere

We introduce an interpolation--regression operator for polynomial approximation on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ from discrete samples. The approximant is a spherical polynomial of degree $r$ which interpolates the data on a prescribed subset of nodes and uses the remaining sampling nodes to minimize the residual in a least squares sense. Under natural rank assumptions on the associated Vandermonde matrices, the approximant is unique and is characterized by an orthogonality condition with respect to the discrete inner product on the sampling set. We then focus on the case in which the sampling and interpolation nodes are antipodally symmetric. In this setting, when the polynomial is expressed in real spherical harmonics, the constrained problem can be decomposed into independent even and odd components. In the same framework, we prove equivariance under the antipodal map and, more generally, under orthogonal transformations preserving the node sets. We also consider spherical designs. In this case, the normal matrix is a scalar matrix. Consequently, the spectral condition number of the associated KKT matrix can be written explicitly. Numerical experiments in both antipodal and non-antipodal settings illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Laguerre-Sobolev orthogonal Polynomials and Boundary Value Problems on a semi-infinite domain

We study a family of Laguerre--Sobolev orthogonal polynomials associated with a Sobolev inner product arising from second--order boundary value problems on the semi--infinite interval $(0,+\infty)$. These polynomials generate an orthogonal basis of test functions vanishing at the endpoints and are especially well suited for the spectral approximation of Schrödinger--type problems with singular potentials. Explicit connection formulas with classical Laguerre polynomials are obtained, together with recurrence relations and asymptotic properties of the corresponding coefficients. A generating function involving Bessel functions is also derived. As an application, we develop a fully diagonalized Laguerre--Sobolev spectral method for Dirichlet problems with singular potentials. The method avoids the solution of linear systems and can be implemented recursively. Numerical experiments for a Schrödinger--type equation with inverse--distance potential confirm spectral accuracy and exponential convergence.

A fully diagonalized spectral method on the unit ball

Our main objective in this work is to show how Sobolev orthogonal polynomials emerge as a useful tool within the framework of spectral methods for boundary-value problems. The solution of a boundary-value problem for a stationary Schrödinger equation on the unit ball can be studied from a variational perspective. In this variational formulation, a Sobolev inner product naturally arises. As test functions, we consider the linear space of the polynomials satisfying the boundary conditions on the sphere, and a basis of mutually orthogonal polynomials with respect to the Sobolev inner product is provided. The basis of the proposed method is given in terms of spherical harmonics and univariate Sobolev orthogonal polynomials. The connection formula between these Sobolev orthogonal polynomials and the classical orthogonal polynomials on the ball is established. Consequently, the Sobolev Fourier coefficients of a function satisfying the boundary value problem are recursively derived. Finally, one numerical experiment is presented.

Lax-type pairs in the theory of bivariate orthogonal polynomials

Sequences of bivariate orthogonal polynomials written as vector polynomials of increasing size satisfy a couple of three term relations with matrix coefficients. In this work, introducing a time-dependent parameter, we analyse a Lax-type pair system for the coefficients of the three term relations. We also deduce several characterizations relating the Lax-type pair, the shape of the weight, Stieltjes function, moments, a differential equation for the weight, and the bidimensional Toda-type systems.

Asymptotic behaviour of the Christoffel functions on the Unit Ball in the presence of a Mass on the Sphere

We present a family of mutually orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball with respect to an inner product which includes a mass uniformly distributed on the sphere. First, connection formulas relating these multivariate orthogonal polynomials and the classical ball polynomials are obtained. Then, using the representation formula for these polynomials in terms of spherical harmonics analytic properties will be deduced. Finally, we analyze the asymptotic behaviour of the Christoffel functions.

Multivariate Orthogonal Polynomials and Modified Moment Functionals

Multivariate orthogonal polynomials can be introduced by using a moment functional defined on the linear space of polynomials in several variables with real coefficients. We study the so-called Uvarov and Christoffel modifications obtained by adding to the moment functional a finite set of mass points, or by multiplying it times a polynomial of total degree 2, respectively. Orthogonal polynomials associated with modified moment functionals will be studied, as well as the impact of the modification in useful properties of the orthogonal polynomials. Finally, some illustrative examples will be given.

Three term relations for a class of bivariate orthogonal polynomials

We study matrix three term relations for orthogonal polynomials in two variables constructed from orthogonal polynomials in one variable. Using the three term recurrence relation for the involved univariate orthogonal polynomials, the explicit expression for the matrix coefficients in these three term relations are deduced. These matrices are diagonal or tridiagonal with entries computable from the one variable coefficients in the respective three term recurrence relation. Moreover, some interesting particular cases are considered.

Orthogonal Polynomials on the Unit Ball and Fourth-Order Partial Differential Equations

The purpose of this work is to analyse a family of mutually orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball with respect to an inner product which includes an additional term on the sphere. First, we will get connection formulas relating classical multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the ball with our family of orthogonal polynomials. Then, using the representation of these polynomials in terms of spherical harmonics, algebraic and differential properties will be deduced.

Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball via outward normal derivatives

We analyse a family of mutually orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball with respect to an inner product which involves the outward normal derivatives on the sphere. Using their representation in terms of spherical harmonics, algebraic and analytic properties will be deduced. First, we deduce explicit connection formulas relating classical multivariate ball polynomials and our family of Sobolev orthogonal polynomials. Then explicit representations for the norms and the kernels will be obtained. Finally, the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding Christoffel functions is studied.

Matrix Pearson equations satisfied by Koornwinder weights in two variables

We consider Koornwinder's method for constructing orthogonal polynomials in two variables from orthogonal polynomials in one variable. If semiclassical orthogonal polynomials in one variable are used, then Koornwinder's construction generates semiclassical orthogonal polynomials in two variables. We consider two methods for deducing matrix Pearson equations for weight functions associated with these polynomials, and consequently, we deduce the second order linear partial differential operators for classical Koornwinder polynomials.
