Enhancement of Spin-charge Conversion in Dilute Magnetic Alloys by Kondo Screening

We derive a kinetic theory capable of dealing both with large spin-orbit coupling and Kondo screening in dilute magnetic alloys. We obtain the collision integral non-perturbatively and uncover a contribution proportional to the momentum derivative of the impurity scattering S-matrix. The latter yields an important correction to the spin diffusion and spin-charge conversion coefficients, and fully captures the so-called side-jump process without resorting to the Born approximation (which fails for resonant scattering), or to otherwise heuristic derivations. We apply our kinetic theory to a quantum impurity model with strong spin-orbit, which captures the most important features of Kondo-screened Cerium impurities in alloys such as La$_{1-x}$Cu$_6$. We find 1) a large zero-temperature spin Hall conductivity that depends solely on the Fermi wave number and 2) a transverse spin diffusion mechanism that modifies the standard Fick's diffusion law. Our predictions can be readily verified by standard spin-transport measurements in metal alloys with Kondo impurities.

Spin-charge conversion in disordered two-dimensional electron gases lacking inversion symmetry

We study the spin-charge conversion mechanisms in a two-dimensional gas of electrons moving in a smooth disorder potential by accounting for both Rashba-type and Mott's skew scattering contributions. We find that quantum interference effects between spin-flip and skew scattering give rise to anisotropic spin precession scattering (ASP), a direct spin-charge conversion mechanism that was discovered in an earlier study of graphene decorated with adatoms [C. Huang \emph{et al.} Phys.~Rev.~B \textbf{94} 085414.~(2016)]. Our findings suggest that, together with other spin-charge conversion mechanisms such as the inverse galvanic effect, ASP is a fairly universal phenomenon that should be present in disordered two-dimensional systems lacking inversion symmetry.

Entanglement entropy scaling of the XXZ chain

We study the entanglement entropy scaling of the XXZ chain. While in the critical XY phase of the XXZ chain the entanglement entropy scales logarithmically with a coefficient that is determined by the associated conformal field theory, at the ferromagnetic point, however, the system is not conformally invariant yet the entanglement entropy still scales logarithmically albeit with a different coefficient. We investigate how such an nontrivial scaling at the ferromagnetic point influences the estimation of the central charge $c$ in the critical XY phase. In particular we use the entanglement scaling of the finite or infinite system, as well as the finite-size scaling of the ground state energy to estimate the value of $c$. In addition, the spin-wave velocity and the scaling dimension are also estimated. We show that in all methods the evaluations are influenced by the nearby ferromagnetic point and result in crossover behavior. Finally we discuss how to determine whether the central charge estimation is strongly influenced by the crossover behavior and how to properly evaluate the central charge.
