Polar actions on homogeneous 3-spaces

We classify polar isometric actions on simply connected 3-dimensional Riemannian homogeneous spaces, up to orbit equivalence. In particular, we classify extrinsically homogeneous surfaces in such spaces and study the geometry of the orbit foliations of the corresponding cohomogeneity one actions.

On isoparametric foliations of complex and quaternionic projective spaces

We conclude the classification of isoparametric (or equivalently, polar) foliations of complex and quaternionic projective spaces. This is done by investigating the projections of certain inhomogeneous isoparametric foliations of the 31-sphere under the respective Hopf fibrations, thereby solving the last remaining open cases.

Isoparametric hypersurfaces in symmetric spaces of non-compact type and higher rank

We construct inhomogeneous isoparametric families of hypersurfaces with non-austere focal set on each symmetric space of non-compact type and rank greater than or equal to 3. If the rank is greater than or equal to 4, there are infinitely many such examples. Our construction yields the first examples of isoparametric families on any Riemannian manifold known to have a non-austere focal set. They can be obtained from a new general extension method of submanifolds from Euclidean spaces to symmetric spaces of non-compact type. This method preserves the mean curvature and isoparametricity, among other geometric properties.

Cohomogeneity one actions on symmetric spaces of noncompact type and higher rank

We develop a new structural result for cohomogeneity one actions on (not necessarily irreducible) symmetric spaces of noncompact type and arbitrary rank. We apply this result to classify cohomogeneity one actions on SL(n,R)/SO(n), n>1, up to orbit equivalence. We also reduce the classification problem on a reducible space to the classification on each one of its irreducible factors, which in particular allows to classify cohomogeneity one actions on any finite product of hyperbolic spaces.

Homogeneous Lagrangian foliations on complex space forms

We classify holomorphic isometric actions on complex space forms all whose orbits are Lagrangian submanifolds, up to orbit equivalence. The only examples are Lagrangian affine subspace foliations of complex Euclidean spaces, and Lagrangian horocycle foliations of complex hyperbolic spaces.

Codimension one Ricci soliton subgroups of solvable Iwasawa groups

Recently, Jablonski proved that, to a large extent, a simply connected solvable Lie group endowed with a left-invariant Ricci soliton metric can be isometrically embedded into the solvable Iwasawa group of a non-compact symmetric space. Motivated by this result, we classify codimension one subgroups of the solvable Iwasawa groups of irreducible symmetric spaces of non-compact type whose induced metrics are Ricci solitons. We also obtain the classifications of codimension one Ricci soliton subgroups of Damek-Ricci spaces and generalized Heisenberg groups.

Homogeneous and inhomogeneous isoparametric hypersurfaces in rank one symmetric spaces

We conclude the classification of cohomogeneity one actions on symmetric spaces of rank one by classifying cohomogeneity one actions on quaternionic hyperbolic spaces up to orbit equivalence. As a by-product of our proof, we produce uncountably many examples of inhomogeneous isoparametric families of hypersurfaces with constant principal curvatures in quaternionic hyperbolic spaces.

Submanifold geometry in symmetric spaces of noncompact type

In this survey article we provide an introduction to submanifold geometry in symmetric spaces of noncompact type. We focus on the construction of examples and the classification problems of homogeneous and isoparametric hypersurfaces, polar and hyperpolar actions, and homogeneous CPC submanifolds.

On homogeneous manifolds whose isotropy actions are polar

We show that simply connected Riemannian homogeneous spaces of compact semisimple Lie groups with polar isotropy actions are symmetric, generalizing results of Fabio Podesta and the third named author. Without assuming compactness, we give a classification of Riemannian homogeneous spaces of semisimple Lie groups whose linear isotropy representations are polar. We show for various such spaces that they do not have polar isotropy actions. Moreover, we prove that Heisenberg groups and non-symmetric Damek-Ricci spaces have non-polar isotropy actions.

Solutions to the overdetermined boundary problem for semilinear equations with position-dependent nonlinearities

We show that a wide range of overdetermined boundary problems for semilinear equations with position-dependent nonlinearities admits nontrivial solutions. The result holds true both on the Euclidean space and on compact Riemannian manifolds. As a byproduct of the proofs we also obtain some rigidity, or partial symmetry, results for solutions to overdetermined problems on Riemannian manifolds of nonconstant curvature.

Isoparametric submanifolds in two-dimensional complex space forms

We show that an isoparametric submanifold of a complex hyperbolic plane, according to the definition of Heintze, Liu and Olmos', is an open part of a principal orbit of a polar action. We also show that there exists a non-isoparametric submanifold of the complex hyperbolic plane that is isoparametric according to the definition of Terng's. Finally, we classify Terng-isoparametric submanifolds of two-dimensional complex space forms.

Polar foliations on quaternionic projective spaces

We classify irreducible polar foliations of codimension $q$ on quaternionic projective spaces $\mathbb H P^n$, for all $(n,q)\neq(7,1)$. We prove that all irreducible polar foliations of any codimension (resp. of codimension one) on $\mathbb H P^n$ are homogeneous if and only if $n+1$ is a prime number (resp. $n$ is even or $n=1$). This shows the existence of inhomogeneous examples of codimension one and higher.
