On the transport of interacting particles in a chain of cavities: Description through a modified Fick-Jacobs equation

We study the transport process of interacting Brownian particles in a tube of varying cross section. To describe this process we introduce a modified Fick-Jacobs equation, considering particles that interact through a hard-core potential. We were able to solve the equation with numerical methods for the case of symmetric and asymmetric cavities. We focused in the concentration of particles along the direction of the tube. We also preformed Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the accuracy of the results, obtaining good agreement between theory and simulations.

Transport in a chain of asymmetric cavities: Effects of the concentration with hard-core interaction

We studied the transport process of overdamped Brownian particles, in a chain of asymmetric cavities, interacting through a hard-core potential. When a force is applied in opposite directions a difference in the drift velocity of the particles inside the cavity can be observed. Previous works on similar systems deal with the low concentration regime, in which the interaction is irrelevant. In this case it was found that large particles show a stronger asymmetry in the drift velocity when a small force is applied, allowing for the separation of different size particles (Reguera et al., Phys. Rev. Lett 108, 020604, 2012). We found that when the interaction between particles is considered, the behavior of the system is substantially different. For example, as concentration is increased, the small particles are the ones that show a stronger asymmetry. For the case where all the particles in the system are of the same size we took advantage of the particle-vacancy analogy to predict that the left and right currents are almost equal in a region around the concentration 0.5 despite the asymmetry of the cavity.

Evolution equation for tagged particle density and correlations in single file diffusion

We derive and study a theoretical description for single file diffusion, i.e., diffusion in a one dimensional lattice of particles with hard core interaction. It is well known that for this system a tagged particle has anomalous diffusion for long times. The novelty of the present approach is that it allows for the derivation of correlations between a tagged particle and other particles of the system at a given distance with empty sites in between. The behavior of the correlation gives deeper insights into the processes involved. Numerical integration of differential equations are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations.

Cavity equations for a positive or negative refraction index material with electric and magnetic non-linearities

We study evolution equations for electric and magnetic field amplitudes in a ring cavity with plane mirrors. The cavity is filled with a positive or negative refraction index material with third order effective electric and magnetic non-linearities. Two coupled non-linear equations for the electric and magnetic amplitudes are obtained. We prove that the description can be reduced to one Lugiato Lefever equation with generalized coefficients. A stability analysis of the homogeneous solution, complemented with numerical integration, shows that any combination of the parameters should correspond to one of three characteristic behaviors.

GENERIC framework for reaction diffusion systems

The GENERIC theory provides a framework for the description of non-equilibrium phenomena in isolated systems beyond local thermal equilibrium and beyond linear non-equilibrium (i.e., linear relations between thermodynamic forces and currents). The framework is applied to some simple and general systems: reactions with detailed balance and Fokker-Planck (FP) equation. It is shown how to apply the theory to a combination of system and reservoir in the case of the FP equation.

Numerical validation of the Complex Swift-Hohenberg equation for lasers

Order parameter equations, such as the complex Swift-Hohenberg (CSH) equation, offer a simplified and universal description that hold close to an instability threshold. The universality of the description refers to the fact that the same kind of instability produces the same order parameter equation. In the case of lasers, the instability usually corresponds to the emitting threshold, and the CSH equation can be obtained from the Maxwell-Bloch (MB) equations for a class C laser with small detuning. In this paper we numerically check the validity of the CSH equation as an approximation of the MB equations, taking into account that its terms are of different asymptotic order, and that, despite of having been systematically overlooked in the literature, this fact is essential in order to correctly capture the weakly nonlinear dynamics of the MB. The approximate distance to threshold range for which the CSH equation holds is also estimated.

Dynamics of localized structures in vector waves

Dynamical properties of topological defects in a twodimensional complex vector field are considered. These objects naturally arise in the study of polarized transverse light waves. Dynamics is modeled by a Vector Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation with parameter values appropriate for linearly polarized laser emission. Creation and annihilation processes, and selforganization of defects in lattice structures, are described. We find "glassy" configurations dominated by vectorial defects and a melting process associated to topological-charge unbinding.

Defect-freezing and Defect-unbinding in the Vector Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation

We describe the dynamical behavior found in numerical solutions of the Vector Complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in parameter values where plane waves are stable. Topological defects in the system are responsible for a rich behavior. At low coupling between the vector components, a {\sl frozen} phase is found, whereas a {\sl gas-like} phase appears at higher coupling. The transition is a consequence of a defect unbinding phenomena. Entropy functions display a characteristic behavior around the transition.

Spatiotemporal Chaos, Localized Structures and Synchronization in the Vector Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation

We study the spatiotemporal dynamics, in one and two spatial dimensions, of two complex fields which are the two components of a vector field satisfying a vector form of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We find synchronization and generalized synchronization of the spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics. The two kinds of synchronization can coexist simultaneously in different regions of the space, and they are mediated by localized structures. A quantitative characterization of the degree of synchronization is given in terms of mutual information measures.

Patterns arising from the interaction between scalar and vectorial instabilities in two-photon resonant Kerr cavities

We study pattern formation associated with the polarization degree of freedom of the electric field amplitude in a mean field model describing a nonlinear Kerr medium close to a two-photon resonance, placed inside a ring cavity with flat mirrors and driven by a coherent $\hat x$-polarized plane-wave field. In the self-focusing case, for negative detunings the pattern arises naturally from a codimension two bifurcation. For a critical value of the field intensity there are two wave numbers that become unstable simultaneously, corresponding to two Turing-like instabilities. Considered alone, one of the instabilities would originate a linearly polarized hexagonal pattern whereas the other instability is of pure vectorial origin and would give rise to an elliptically polarized stripe pattern. We show that the competition between the two wavenumbers can originate different structures, being the detuning a natural selection parameter.
