Hamiltonian Relative Equilibria with Continuous Isotropy

In symmetric Hamiltonian systems, relative equilibria usually arise in continuous families. The geometry of these families in the setting of free actions of the symmetry group is well-understood. Here we consider the question for non-free actions. Some results are already known in this direction, and we use the so called bundle equations to provide a systematic treatment of this question which both consolidates the known results, extending the scope of the results to deal with non-compact symmetry groups, as well as producing new results. Specifically we address questions about the stability, persistence and bifurcations of these relative equilibria.

The Fast-Superfast Transition in the Sleeping Lagrange Top

The fast-superfast transition is a particular movement of eigenvalues found by Lewis et al. when studying the family of sleeping equilibria in the Lagrange top. Although this behaviour of eigenvalues typically suggests a change in stability or a bifurcation, in this case there is no particular change in the qualitative dynamical properties of the system. Using modern methods, based on the singularities of symmetry groups for Hamiltonian systems, we clarify the appearance of this transition.

The Hamiltonian Tube Of A Cotangent-Lifted Action

The Marle-Guillemin-Sternberg (MGS) form is local model for a neighborhood of an orbit of a Hamiltonian Lie group action on a symplectic manifold. One of the main features of the MGS form is that it puts simultaneously in normal form the existing symplectic structure and momentum map. The main drawback of the MGS form is that it does not have an explicit expression. We will obtain a MGS form for cotangent- lifted actions on cotangent bundles that, in addition to its defining features, respects the additional fibered structure present. This model generalizes previous results obtained by T. Schmah for orbits with fully-isotropic momentum. In addition, our construction is explicit up to the integration of a differential equation on $G$. This equation can be easily solved for the groups $SO(3)$ or $SL(2)$, thus giving explicit symplectic coordinates for arbitrary canonical actions of these groups on any cotangent bundle.

A Hamiltonian Study Of The Stability and Bifurcations For The Satellite Problem

We study the dynamics of a rigid body in a central gravitational field modeled as a Hamiltonian system with continuous rotational symmetries following the geometrical framework of Wang et al. Novelties of our work are the use the Reduced Energy Momentum for the stability analysis and the treatment of axisymmetric bodies. We explicitly show the existence of new relative equilibria and study their stability and bifurcation patterns.

On the stability of Hamiltonian relative equilibria with non-trivial isotropy

We consider Hamiltonian systems with symmetry, and relative equilibria with isotropy subgroup of positive dimension. The stability of such relative equilibria has been studied by Ortega and Ratiu and by Lerman and Singer. In both papers the authors give sufficient conditions for stability which require first determining a splitting of a subspace of the Lie algebra of the symmetry group, with different splittings giving different criteria. In this note we remove this splitting construction and so provide a more general and more easily computed criterion for stability. The result is also extended to apply to systems whose momentum map is not coadjoint equivariant.

On Singular Poisson Sternberg Spaces

We obtain a theory of stratified Sternberg spaces thereby extending the theory of cotangent bundle reduction for free actions to the singular case where the action on the base manifold consists of only one orbit type. We find that the symplectic reduced spaces are stratified topological fiber bundles over the cotangent bundle of the orbit space. We also obtain a Poisson stratification of the Sternberg space. To construct the singular Poisson Sternberg space we develop an appropriate theory of singular connections for proper group actions on a single orbit type manifold including a theory of holonomy extending the usual Ambrose-Singer theorem for principal bundles.

Stability of relative equilibria with singular momentum values in simple mechanical systems

A method for testing $G_μ$-stability of relative equilibria in Hamiltonian systems of the form "kinetic + potential energy" is presented. This method extends the Reduced Energy-Momentum Method of Simo et al. to the case of non-free group actions and singular momentum values. A normal form for the symplectic matrix at a relative equilibrium is also obtained.

The Symplectic Normal Space of a Cotangent-Lifted Action

For the cotangent bundle of a smooth Riemannian manifold acted upon by the lift of a smooth and proper action by isometries of a Lie group, we characterize the symplectic normal space at any point. We show that this space splits as the direct sum of the cotangent bundle of a linear space and a symplectic linear space coming from reduction of a coadjoint orbit. This characterization of the symplectic normal space can be expressed solely in terms of the group action on the base manifold and the coadjoint representation. Some relevant particular cases are explored.

The isotropy lattice of a lifted action

We obtain an algorithmic construction of the isotropy lattice for a lifted action of a Lie group $G$ on $TM$ and $T^*M$ based only on the knowledge of $G$ and its action on $M$. Some applications to symplectic geometry are also shown.

On the geometry of reduced cotangent bundles at zero momentum

We consider the problem of cotangent bundle reduction for non free group actions at zero momentum. We show that in this context the symplectic stratification obtained by Sjamaar and Lerman refines in two ways: (i) each symplectic stratum admits a stratification which we call the secondary stratification with two distinct types of pieces, one of which is open and dense and symplectomorphic to a cotangent bundle; (ii) the reduced space at zero momentum admits a finer stratification than the symplectic one into pieces that are coisotropic in their respective symplectic strata.

Singular cosphere bundle reduction

This paper studies singular contact reduction for cosphere bundles at the zero value of the momentum map. A stratification of the singular quotient, finer than the contact one and better adapted to the bundle structure of the problem, is obtained. The strata of this new stratification are a collection of cosphere bundles and coisotropic or Legendrian submanifolds of their corresponding contact components.
