On the (non-)uniqueness of the Levi-Civita solution in the Einstein-Hilbert-Palatini formalism

We study the most general solution for affine connections that are compatible with the variational principle in the Palatini formalism for the Einstein-Hilbert action (with possible minimally coupled matter terms). We find that there is a family of solutions generalising the Levi-Civita connection, characterised by an arbitrary, non-dynamical vector field ${\cal A}_μ$. We discuss the mathematical properties and the physical implications of this family and argue that, although there is a clear mathematical difference between these new Palatini connections and the Levi-Civita one, both unparametrised geodesics and the Einstein equation are shared by all of them. Moreover, the Palatini connections are characterised precisely by these two properties, as well as by other properties of its parallel transport. Based on this, we conclude that physical effects associated to the choice of one or the other will not be distinguishable, at least not at the level of solutions or test particle dynamics. We propose a geometrical interpretation for the existence and unobservability of the new solutions.

On the interplay between Lorentzian Causality and Finsler metrics of Randers type

We obtain some results in both Lorentz and Finsler geometries, by using a correspondence between the conformal structure (Causality) of standard stationary spacetimes on $M=\R\times S$ and Randers metrics on $S$. In particular, for stationary spacetimes, we give a simple characterization of when they are causally continuous or globally hyperbolic (including in the latter case, when $S$ is a Cauchy hypersurface), in terms of an associated Randers metric. Consequences for the computability of Cauchy developments are also derived. Causality suggests that the role of completeness in many results of Riemannian Geometry (geodesic connectedness by minimizing geodesics, Bonnet-Myers, Synge theorems) is played, in Finslerian Geometry, by the compactness of symmetrized closed balls. Moreover, under this condition we show that for any Randers metric there exists another Randers metric with the same pregeodesics and geodesically complete. Even more, results on the differentiability of Cauchy horizons in spacetimes yield consequences for the differentiability of the Randers distance to a subset, and vice versa.

Convex domains of Finsler and Riemannian manifolds

A detailed study of the notions of convexity for a hypersurface in a Finsler manifold is carried out. In particular, the infinitesimal and local notions of convexity are shown to be equivalent. Our approach differs from Bishop's one in his classical result (Bishop, Indiana Univ Math J 24:169-172, 1974) for the Riemannian case. Ours not only can be extended to the Finsler setting but it also reduces the typical requirements of differentiability for the metric and it yields consequences on the multiplicity of connecting geodesics in the convex domain defined by the hypersurface.

Some remarks on Causality Theory and Variational Methods in Lorentzian manifolds

In this conference published in 1997 some problems on the geodesics of a Lorentzian manifold concerning causality and infinite-dimensional variational methods, are pointed out. Even though a big progress on many of these questions have been carried out since then, some computations in this paper may be useful and have not been published elsewhere. Among them, for example, the following one (Section 3). Consider a spacetime which can be written globally as a product $R x M$, such that the natural vector field associated to the coordinate $t$ in $R$ is timelike. When is this spacetime globally hyperbolic with Cauchy hypersurfaces the slices $t=$ constant?

Global hyperbolicity and Palais-Smale condition for action functionals in stationary spacetimes

In order to apply variational methods to the action functional for geodesics of a stationary spacetime, some hypotheses, useful to obtain classical Palais-Smale condition, are commonly used: pseudo-coercivity, bounds on certain coefficients of the metric, etc. We prove that these technical assumptions admit a natural interpretation for the conformal structure (causality) of the manifold. As a consequence, any stationary spacetime with a complete timelike Killing vector field and a complete Cauchy hypersurface (thus, globally hyperbolic), is proved to be geodesically connected.

On the Geometry of Static Spacetimes

We review geometrical properties of a static spacetime $(M,g)$, including geodesic completeness, causality, standard splittings, compact $M$, closed geodesics and geodesic connectedness. We pay special attention to the critical quadratic behavior at infinity of the coefficients $β$, $β^{-1}$ ($β= -g(K,K)$, being $K$ a timelike irrotational Killing vector field), which essentially control completeness, causality and geodesic connectedness. Recent references are specially discussed.

On General Plane Fronted Waves. Geodesics

A general class of Lorentzian metrics, $M_0 x R^2$, $ds^2 = <.,.> + 2 du dv + H(x,u) du^2$, with $(M_0, <.,.>$ any Riemannian manifold, is introduced in order to generalize classical exact plane fronted waves. Here, we start a systematic study of their main geodesic properties: geodesic completeness, geodesic connectedness and multiplicity, causal character of connecting geodesics. These results are independent of the possibility of a full integration of geodesic equations. Variational and geometrical techniques are applied systematically. In particular, we prove that the asymptotic behavior of $H(x,u)$ with $x$ at infinity determines many properties of geodesics. Essentially, a subquadratic growth of $H$ ensures geodesic completeness and connectedness, while the critical situation appears when $H(x,u)$ behaves in some direction as $|x|^2$, as in the classical model of exact gravitational waves

Geodesics in stationary spacetimes. Application to Kerr spacetime

The Levi-Civita connection and geodesic equations for a stationary spacetime are studied in depth. General formulae which generalize those for warped products are obtained. These results are applicated to some regions of Kerr spacetime previously studied by using variational methods. We show that they are neither space-convex nor geodesically connected. Moreover, the whole stationary part of Kerr spacetime is not geodesically connected, except when the angular momentum is equal to zero (Schwarzschild spacetime).

Geodesic connectedness of semi-Riemannian manifolds

The question whether a Riemannian manifold is geodesically connected can be studied from geometrical as well as variational methods, and accurate results can be obtained by using the associated distance and related properties of the positive-definiteness. It is natural to state this problem in manifolds with (possibly non-smooth) boundary, and some conditions on this boundary has been studied. For Lorentzian manifolds, the results cannot be so general, and very different techniques has been introduced which are satisfactory for some classes of Lorentzian manifolds: spaceforms, disprisoning and pseudoconvex manifolds, stationary, globally hyperbolic or multiwarped spacetimes... Some of them are appliable to semi-Riemannian manifolds with higher index or even to manifolds with just an affine connection. Our purpose is to review these semi-Riemannian techniques, discussing the results and possible extensions.

Convexity of domains of Riemannian manifolds

In this paper we analyze the problem of the geodesic connectedness of subsets of Riemannian manifolds. By using variational methods, the geodesic connectedness of open domains (whose boundaries can be not differentiable and not convex) of a smooth Riemannian manifold is proved. In some cases also the convexity of the domain is obtained. Moreover we present examples of the applicability and of the independence of the assumptions. Finally we give an application to the existence of trajectories with fixed energy of dynamical systems.

Geodesic connectedness of multiwarped spacetimes

A new technique for the study of geodesic connectedness in a class of Lorentzian manifolds is introduced. It is based on arguments of Brouwer's topological degree for the solution of functional equations. It is shown to be very useful for multiwarped spacetimes, which include different types of relativistic spacetimes.

Some semi-Riemannian volume comparison theorems

Lorentzian versions of classical Riemannian volume comparison theorems by Gunther, Bishop and Bishop-Gromov, are stated for suitable natural subsets of general semi-Riemannian manifolds. The problem is more subtle in the Bishop-Gromov case, which is extensively discussed. For the general semi-Riemannian case, a local version of the Gunther and Bishop theorems is given and applied.
