The cohomology ring away from 2 of configuration spaces on real projective spaces

Let R be a commutative ring containing 1/2. We compute the R-cohomology ring of the configuration space F(m,k) of k ordered points in the m-dimensional real projective space. The method uses the observation that the orbit configuration space of k ordered points in the m-dimensional sphere (with respect to the antipodal action) is a 2^k-fold covering of F(m,k). This implies that, for odd m, the Leray spectral sequence for the inclusion of F(m,k) in the k-fold Cartesian self power of the m-dimensional real projective space collapses after its first non-trivial differential, just as it does when the projective space is replaced by a complex projective variety. The method also allows us to handle the R-cohomology ring of the configuration space of k ordered points in a punctured real projective space. Lastly, we compute the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and all of the higher topological complexities of some of the auxiliary orbit configuration spaces.

Topological complexity of motion planning in projective product spaces

We study Farber's topological complexity (TC) of Davis' projective product spaces (PPS's). We show that, in many non-trivial instances, the TC of PPS's coming from at least two sphere factors is (much) lower than the dimension of the manifold. This is in high contrast with the known situation for (usual) real projective spaces for which, in fact, the Euclidean immersion dimension and TC are two facets of the same problem. Low TC-values have been observed for infinite families of non-simply connected spaces only for H-spaces, for finite complexes whose fundamental group has cohomological dimension not exceeding 2, and now in this work for infinite families of PPS's. We discuss general bounds for the TC (and the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category) of PPS's, and compute these invariants for specific families of such manifolds. Some of our methods involve the use of an equivariant version of TC. We also give a characterization of the Euclidean immersion dimension of PPS's through generalized concepts of axial maps and, alternatively, non-singular maps. This gives an explicit explanation of the known relationship between the generalized vector field problem and the Euclidean immersion problem for PPS's.

Lie algebras associated to fiber-type arrangements

Given a hyperplane arrangement in a complex vector space of dimension n, there is a natural associated arrangement of codimension k subspaces in a complex vector space of dimension k*n. Topological invariants of the complement of this subspace arrangement are related to those of the complement of the original hyperplane arrangement. In particular, if the hyperplane arrangement is fiber-type, then, apart from grading, the Lie algebra obtained from the descending central series for the fundamental group of the complement of the hyperplane arrangement is isomorphic to the Lie algebra of primitive elements in the homology of the loop space for the complement of the associated subspace arrangement. Furthermore, this last Lie algebra is given by the homotopy groups modulo torsion of the loop space of the complement of the subspace arrangement. Looping further yields an associated Poisson algebra, and generalizations of the "universal infinitesimal Poisson braid relations."
