Finite Element Approximation of the Cahn-Hilliard-Cook equation

We study the nonlinear stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation per- turbed by additive colored noise. We show almost sure existence and regularity of solutions. We introduce spatial approximation by a standard finite element method and prove error estimates of optimal order on sets of probability arbitrarily close to 1. We also prove strong convergence without known rate.

Benjamini-Schramm limit of the heat semigroup on quantum graphs

We study the behaviour of heat semigroups on quantum graphs under Benjamini-Schramm convergence. For quantum graphs with uniformly bounded geometry, equipped with continuity and Kirchhoff vertex conditions, we show that the heat semigroup, transported to a common Hilbert space by a canonical breadth-first identification of the edges, depends continuously on the underlying rooted quantum graph with respect to a local Benjamini-Schramm-type metric. As a consequence, root-averaged pairings of the semigroup converge along Benjamini-Schramm convergent sequences of finite quantum graphs. Combining this with a Trotter-Kato-type approximation of the semigroup by semigroups on metric balls, we obtain a double-limit theorem interchanging the truncation radius and the graph limit.

Efficient generation of Gaussian random fields on metric graphs via domain decomposition and mass matrix lumping

We consider Gaussian Random Fields on metric graphs defined implicitly as the stationary solution to a fractional SPDE driven by Gaussian white noise. Sampling from the finite element approximation requires the Cholesky factorization of the mass matrix, causing non-linear execution time explosions and massive memory fill-in on large graphs. Hence, we combine Neumann-Neumann graph decomposition with mass matrix lumping and demonstrate empirically, that our approach preserves exact theoretical convergence rates established in [8] while achieving multi-order speedups and massive memory reductions.

A regularized truncated finite element method for degenerate parabolic stochastic PDE on non-compact graph

We study the numerical approximation of a class of degenerate parabolic stochastic partial differential equations on non-compact metric graphs, which naturally arise in the asymptotic analysis of Hamiltonian flows under small noise perturbations. The numerical discretization of these equations faces several challenges, including the non-compactness of the graph, the degeneracy of the differential operator near vertices, and the non-symmetry of the associated bilinear form. To address these issues, we propose a multi-step numerical strategy combining graph truncation, localized coefficient regularization, and finite element spatial discretization. By incorporating localization techniques, tightness arguments, and resolvent estimates, we establish the strong convergence of the proposed scheme in a weighted $L^2$-space. Our results provide a systematic methodology that is potentially extensible to more general non-compact graphs and degenerate operators.

On the strong Feller property of the heat equation on quantum graphs with Kirchoff noise

We consider a so-called quantum graph with standard continuity and Kirchhoff vertex conditions where the Kirchhoff vertex condition is perturbed by Gaussian noise. We show that the quantum graph setting is very different from the classical one dimensional boundary noise setting, where the transition semigroup is known to be strong Feller, by giving examples and counterexamples to the strong Feller property. In particular, when the graph is a tree, and there is noise present in all of the boundary vertices except one, then the transition semigroup associated with the problem is strong Feller at any time T > 0. This turns out to be also a necessary condition for equilateral star graphs. We also comment on the existence and uniqueness of the invariant measure and the regularity of the solution.

Neumann-Neumann type domain decomposition of elliptic problems on metric graphs

In this paper we develop a Neumann-Neumann type domain decomposition method for elliptic problems on metric graphs. We describe the iteration in the continuous and discrete setting and rewrite the latter as a preconditioner for the Schur complement system. Then we formulate the discrete iteration as an abstract additive Schwarz iteration and prove that it convergences to the finite element solution with a rate that is independent of the finite element mesh size. We show that the condition number of the Schur complement is also independent of the finite element mesh size. We provide an implementation and test it on various examples of interest and compare it to other preconditioners.

Regularity and numerical approximation of fractional elliptic differential equations on compact metric graphs

The fractional differential equation $L^βu = f$ posed on a compact metric graph is considered, where $β>0$ and $L = κ^2 - \nabla(a\nabla)$ is a second-order elliptic operator equipped with certain vertex conditions and sufficiently smooth and positive coefficients $κ, a$. We demonstrate the existence of a unique solution for a general class of vertex conditions and derive the regularity of the solution in the specific case of Kirchhoff vertex conditions. These results are extended to the stochastic setting when $f$ is replaced by Gaussian white noise. For the deterministic and stochastic settings under generalized Kirchhoff vertex conditions, we propose a numerical solution based on a finite element approximation combined with a rational approximation of the fractional power $L^{-β}$. For the resulting approximation, the strong error is analyzed in the deterministic case, and the strong mean squared error as well as the $L_2(Γ\times Γ)$-error of the covariance function of the solution are analyzed in the stochastic setting. Explicit rates of convergences are derived for all cases. Numerical experiments for ${L = κ^2 - Δ, κ>0}$ are performed to illustrate the results.

On the parabolic Cauchy problem for quantum graphs with vertex noise

We investigate the parabolic Cauchy problem associated with quantum graphs including Lipschitz or polynomial type nonlinearities and additive Gaussian noise perturbed vertex conditions. The vertex conditions are the standard continuity and Kirchhoff assumptions in each vertex. In the case when only Kirchhoff conditions are perturbed, we can prove existence and uniqueness of a mild solution with continuous paths in the standard state space $\mathcal{H}$ of square integrable functions on the edges. We also show that the solution is Markov and Feller. Furthermore, assuming that the vertex values of the normalized eigenfunctions of the self-adjoint operator governing the problem are uniformly bounded, we show that the mild solution has continuous paths in the fractional domain space associated with the Hamiltonian operator, $\mathcal{H}_α$ for $α<\frac{1}{4}$. This is the case when the Hamiltonian operator is the standard Laplacian perturbed by a potential. We also show that if noise is present in both type of vertex conditions, then the problem admits a mild solution with continuous paths in the fractional domain space $\mathcal{H}_α$ with $α<-\frac{1}{4}$ only. These regularity results are the quantum graph analogues obtained by da Prato and Zabczyk [9] in case of a single interval and classical boundary Dirichlet or Neumann noise.

Nonlinear semigroups for nonlocal conservation laws

We investigate a class of nonlocal conservation laws in several space dimensions, where the continuum average of weighted nonlocal interactions are considered over a finite horizon. We establish well-posedness for a broad class of flux functions and initial data via semigroup theory in Banach spaces and, in particular, via the celebrated Crandall-Liggett Theorem. We also show that the unique mild solution satisfies a Kružkov-type nonlocal entropy inequality. Similarly to the local case, we demonstrate an efficient way of proving various desirable qualitative properties of the unique solution.

Approximation of SPDE covariance operators by finite elements: A semigroup approach

The problem of approximating the covariance operator of the mild solution to a linear stochastic partial differential equation is considered. An integral equation involving the semigroup of the mild solution is derived and a general error decomposition is proven. This formula is applied to approximations of the covariance operator of a stochastic advection-diffusion equation and a stochastic wave equation, both on bounded domains. The approximations are based on finite element discretizations in space and rational approximations of the exponential function in time. Convergence rates are derived in the trace class and Hilbert--Schmidt norms with numerical simulations illustrating the results.

Hilbert--Schmidt regularity of symmetric integral operators on bounded domains with applications to SPDE approximations

Regularity estimates for an integral operator with a symmetric continuous kernel on a convex bounded domain are derived. The covariance of a mean-square continuous random field on the domain is an example of such an operator. The estimates are of the form of Hilbert--Schmidt norms of the integral operator and its square root, composed with fractional powers of an elliptic operator equipped with homogeneous boundary conditions of either Dirichlet or Neumann type. These types of estimates, which couple the regularity of the driving noise with the properties of the differential operator, have important implications for stochastic partial differential equations on bounded domains as well as their numerical approximations. The main tools used to derive the estimates are properties of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of functions on bounded domains along with Hilbert--Schmidt embeddings of Sobolev spaces. Both non-homogeneous and homogeneous kernels are considered. In the latter case, results in a general Schatten class norm are also provided. Important examples of homogeneous kernels covered by the results of the paper include the class of Matérn kernels.

Some approximation results for mild solutions of stochastic fractional order evolution equations driven by Gaussian noise

We investigate the quality of space approximation of a class of stochastic integral equations of convolution type with Gaussian noise. Such equations arise, for example, when considering mild solutions of stochastic fractional order partial differential equations but also when considering mild solutions of classical stochastic partial differential equations. The key requirement for the equations is a smoothing property of the deterministic evolution operator which is typical in parabolic type problems. We show that if one has access to nonsmooth data estimates for the deterministic error operator together with its derivative of a space discretization procedure, then one obtains error estimates in pathwise Hölder norms with rates that can be read off the deterministic error rates. We illustrate the main result by considering a class of stochastic fractional order partial differential equations and space approximations performed by spectral Galerkin methods and finite elements. We also improve an existing result on the stochastic heat equation.

A Higher Order Resolvent-positive Finite Difference Approximation for Fractional Derivatives

We develop a finite difference approximation of order $α$ for the $α$-fractional derivative. The weights of the approximation scheme have the same rate-matrix type properties as the popular Grünwald scheme. In particular, approximate solutions to fractional diffusion equations preserve positivity. Furthermore, for the approximation of the solution to the skewed fractional heat equation on a bounded domain the new approximation scheme keeps its order $α$ whereas the order of the Grünwald scheme reduces to order $α-1$, contradicting the convergence rate results by Meerschaert and Tadjeran.

Surface finite element approximation of spherical Whittle--Matérn Gaussian random fields

Spherical Whittle--Matérn Gaussian random fields are considered as solutions to fractional elliptic stochastic partial differential equations on the sphere. Approximation is done with surface finite elements. While the non-fractional part of the operator is solved by a recursive scheme, a quadrature of the Dunford--Taylor integral representation is employed for the fractional part. Strong error analysis is performed, and the computational complexity is bounded in terms of the accuracy. Numerical experiments for different choices of parameters confirm the theoretical findings.

Stochastic reaction-diffusion equations on networks

We consider stochastic reaction-diffusion equations on a finite network represented by a finite graph. On each edge in the graph a multiplicative cylindrical Gaussian noise driven reaction-diffusion equation is given supplemented by a dynamic Kirchhoff-type law perturbed by multiplicative scalar Gaussian noise in the vertices. The reaction term on each edge is assumed to be an odd degree polynomial, not necessarily of the same degree on each edge, with possibly stochastic coefficients and negative leading term. We utilize the semigroup approach for stochastic evolution equations in Banach spaces to obtain existence and uniqueness of solutions with sample paths in the space of continuous functions on the graph. In order to do so we generalize existing results on abstract stochastic reaction-diffusion equations in Banach spaces.

On the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation on networks with multiplicative noise

We consider a system of stochastic Allen-Cahn equations on a finite network represented by a finite graph. On each edge in the graph a multiplicative Gaussian noise driven stochastic Allen-Cahn equation is given with possibly different potential barrier heights supplemented by a continuity condition and a Kirchhoff-type law in the vertices. Using the semigroup approach for stochastic evolution equations in Banach spaces we obtain existence and uniqueness of solutions with sample paths in the space of continuous functions on the graph. We also prove more precise space-time regularity of the solution.

Boundary conditions for nonlocal one-sided pseudo-differential operators and the associated stochastic processes II

We connect boundary conditions for one-sided pseudo-differential operators with the generators of modified one-sided Lévy processes. On one hand this allows modellers to use appropriate boundary conditions with confidence when restricting the modelling domain. On the other hand it allows for numerical techniques based on differential equation solvers to obtain fast approximations of densities or other statistical properties of restricted one-sided Lévy processes encountered, for example, in finance. In particular we identify a new nonlocal mass conserving boundary condition by showing it corresponds to fast-forwarding, i.e. removing the time the process spends outside the domain. We treat all combinations of killing, reflecting and fast-forwarding boundary conditions. In Part I we show wellposedness of the backward and forward Cauchy problems with a one-sided pseudo-differential operator with boundary conditions as generator. We do so by showing convergence of Feller semigroups based on grid point approximations of the modified Lévy process. In Part II we show that the limiting Feller semigroup is indeed the semigroup associated with the modified Lévy process by showing continuity of the modifications with respect to the Skorokhod topology.
