Phase-enhanced excitations in pumped collective nuclear systems

The quantum dynamics of an externally driven ensemble of nuclear two-level systems embedded in a leaky broadband cavity is investigated theoretically. In the considered scenario both the nuclear ensemble and the cavity mode are coherently pumped by two externally applied x-ray electromagnetic fields. When the frequencies of the applied coherent fields are identical, cross-correlations among the existing decay channels increase the nuclear excitation probabilities depending on the phase difference of the applied fields. Our results show that the excited state of the nuclear ensemble may exhibit sub- to super-Poissonian nuclear statistics, demonstrating induced correlations during photon absorption or emission processes. The role of cross-correlations for the superradiant decay and the collective Lamb shift of the ensemble is also investigated.

Higher-order spatial photon interference versus dipole blockade effect

The steady-state quantum dynamics of three dipole-dipole coupled two-level emitters, fixed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle, and interacting via the environmental thermostat is investigated. We have analytically obtained the populations of the involved three-atom cooperative states as well as of the second- and third-order spatial photon correlation functions of the light scattered by the few-qubit sample. As a consequence, we have demonstrated that this incoherently excited system spontaneously generates streams of single photons possessing sub-Poissonian photon statistics. In analogy to the dipole-dipole blockade, one may expect that at smaller inter particle distances, compared to the photon emission wavelength, the reported phenomenon has the same origin. However, we have shown that the quantum photon features are due to the interaction's nature of the few symmetrically arranged two-level emitters with the surrounding thermal reservoir. Respectively, at larger atomic intervals the effect occurs because of high-order spatial interference phenomena. Sub-wavelength interference fringes can be observed too, via measurements of spatial higher-order photon correlation functions.

Dipole-dipole interacting two-level emitters in a moderately intense laser field

We investigate the resonance fluorescence features of a small ensemble of closely packed and moderately laser pumped two-level emitters at resonance. The mean distance between any two-level radiators is smaller than the corresponding emission wavelength, such that the dipole-dipole interactions are not negligible. We have found that under the secular approximation, the collective resonance fluorescence spectrum consists of 2N+1 spectral lines, where N is the number of emitters from the sample. The 2N spectral sidebands, symmetrically located around the generalized Rabi frequency with respect to the central line at the laser frequency, are distinguishable if the dipole-dipole coupling strength is larger than the collective spontaneous decay rate. This way, one can estimate the radiators number within the ensemble via measuring of the spontaneously scattered collective resonance fluorescence spectrum. Contrary, if the dipole-dipole coupling is of the order of or smaller than the cooperative spontaneous decay rate, but still non-negligible, the spectrum turns into a Mollow-like fluorescence spectrum, where the two sidebands spectral lines broadens, proportional to the dipole-dipole coupling strength, respectively.

Dense dipole-dipole-coupled two-level systems in a thermal bath

The quantum dynamics of a dense and dipole-dipole coupled ensemble of two-level emitters interacting via their environmental thermostat is investigated. The static dipole-dipole interaction strengths are being considered strong enough but smaller than the transition frequency. Therefore, the established thermal equilibrium of ensemble's quantum dynamics is described with respect to the dipole-dipole coupling strengths. We have demonstrated the quantum nature of the spontaneously scattered light field in this process for weaker thermal baths as well as non-negligible dipole-dipole couplings compared to the emitter's transition frequency. Furthermore, the collectively emitted photon intensity suppresses or enhances depending on the environmental thermal baths intensities.

Enhanced phonon lifetimes with optically controlled single molecules

We have investigated the phonon dynamics of a single-molecule embedded in a mechanical resonator made of an organic crystal. The whole system is placed in an optical resonator within the bad cavity limit. We have found that the optical control of the molecular population affects the phonon dynamics. Long-lived phonons are obtained when slowing-down the decay dynamics of the molecule via modulation of the transition frequency. The discussed results are also valid for optomechanical setups based on other types of two-level emitters and mechanical resonators.

Performance of the collective three-level quantum thermal engine

We investigate the performance of a microscopic quantum heat engine consisting of V- or Lambda-type emitters interacting collectively or independently when being in contact with environmental thermal reservoirs. Though the efficiency of a Carnot's cycle is always higher than those associated with these setups, we have found that the performance of the cooperative Lambda-type heat engine may be larger than that of the V-type under similar conditions. Cooperativity among the emitters plays an important role for the Lambda-type setup, significantly improving its performance, while is less relevant for a V-type thermal engine. This is because the population inversion on the working atomic transition as well as its off-diagonal elements behave differently for these two atomic ensembles.

Multiphonon quantum dynamics in cavity optomechanical systems

The multiphonon quantum dynamics in laser-pumped cavity optomechanical samples containing a vibrating mirror is investigated. Especially, we focus on dispersive interaction regimes where the externally applied coherent field frequency detuning from the optical resonator frequency is not equal to the mirror's oscillating frequency or to its multiples. As a result, for moderately strong couplings among the involved subsystems, the quantum dynamics of this complex system is described by multiphonon absorption or emission processes, respectively. Particularly, we demonstrate efficient ways to monitor the phonon quantum dynamics via photon detection. The possibility to extract the relevant sample parameters, for instance, the coupling strength between the mechanical mirror and the electromagnetic field, is also discussed.

Microwave multiphoton conversion via coherently driven permanent dipole systems

We investigate the multiphoton quantum dynamics of a leaking single-mode quantized cavity field coupled with a resonantly driven two-level system possessing permanent dipoles. The frequencies of the interacting subsystems are being considered very different, e.g., microwave ranges for the cavity and optical domains for the frequency of the two-level emitter, respectively. In this way, the emitter couples to the resonator mode via its diagonal dipole moments only. Furthermore, the generalized Rabi frequency resulting form the external coherent driving of the two-level subsystem is assumed as well different from the resonator's frequency or its multiples. As a consequence, this highly dispersive interaction regime is responsible for the cavity multiphoton quantum dynamics and photon conversion from optical to microwave ranges, respectively.

Entanglement versus cooling in the system of a driven pair of two-level qubits longitudinally coupled with a boson mode field

The relationship among the entanglement creation within coherently pumped and closely spaced two-level emitters longitudinally coupled with a single-mode boson field, and the subsequent quantum cooling of the boson mode is investigated. Even though the two-level qubits are resonantly driven, we have demonstrated an efficient cooling mechanism well below limits imposed by the thermal background. Furthermore, the cooling effect is accompanied by entanglement of the qubit pair components when the dipole-dipole frequency shift is close to the frequency of the boson mode. The maximum boson mode cooling efficiency realizes on the expense of the entanglement creation. Importantly, this occurs for rather weak external pumping fields protecting the sample from the deteriorations. Finally, the conditions to effectively optimize these effects are described as well.

Dynamics of a quantum oscillator coupled with a three-level Lambda-type emitter

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a quantum oscillator coupled with the most upper state of a three-level $Λ-$ type system. The two transitions of the three-level emitter, possessing orthogonal dipole moments, are coherently pumped with a single or two electromagnetic field sources, respectively. We have found ranges for flexible lasing or cooling phenomena referring to the quantum oscillator's degrees of freedom. This is due to asymmetrical decay rates and quantum interference effects leading to population transfer among the relevant dressed states of the emitter's subsystem with which the quantum oscillator is coupled. As an appropriate system can be considered a nanomechanical resonator coupled with the most excited state of the three-level emitter fixed on it. Alternatively, if the upper state of the $Λ-$type system possesses a permanent dipole then it can couple with a cavity electromagnetic field mode which can be in the terahertz domain, for instance. In the latter case, we demonstrate an effective electromagnetic field source of terahertz photons.

Entanglement of a laser driven pair of two-level qubits via its phonon environment

The entanglement dynamics of a laser-pumped two-level quantum dot pair is investigated in the steady-state. The closely spaced two-level emitters, embedded in a semiconductor substrate, interact with both the environmental vacuum modes of the electromagnetic field reservoir as well as with the lattice vibrational phonon thermostat. We have found that the entanglement among the pair's components is substantially enhanced due to presence of the phonon subsystem. The reason is phonon induced decay among the symmetrical and antisymmetrical two-qubit collective states and, consequently, the population of the latter one. This also means that through thermal phonon bath engineering one can access the subradiant two-particle cooperative state.

Enhanced cooling for stronger qubit-phonon couplings

Here we present details on how the cooling effects of an opto-mechanical system are affected beyond the secular approximation. To this end, a laser driven two-level quantum dot (QD) embed- ded in a phononic nano-cavity is investigated for moderately strong QD-phonon couplings regimes. For these regimes, the use of a secular approximation within the QD-phonon interaction terms is no longer justified as the rapidly oscillating terms cannot be neglected from the system dynamics. Therefore, one shows that although being small, their contribution plays an important role when quantum cooling is achieved. The main contribution of the fast oscillating terms is analytically estimated and one compares how the quantum cooling dynamics change within or beyond the sec- ular approximation. The behavior of the quantum cooling effect is investigated in the steady-state regime via the phonon field statistics.

Amplifying ultraweak transitions in collective systems via quantum interference

We investigate laser-induced quantum interference phenomena in superradiance processes and in an ensemble of initially excited $Λ-$type closely packed three-level emitters. The lower doublet levels are pumped with a coherent laser field. Due to constructive quantum interference effects, the superradiance occurs on a much weaker atomic transition which is not the case in the absence of the coherent driving. This result may be of visible relevance for enhancing ultraweak transitions in atomic or atomic-like systems, respectively, or for high-frequency lasing effects.

Fast phonon dynamics of a nanomechanical oscillator due to cooperative effects

We investigate the coupled-system dynamics of two-level quantum dots placed on a vibrating nanomechanical resonator. The ensemble of quantum dots exhibits superradiance features which are transferred to the mechanical degrees of freedom representing fast quantum dynamics and enhanced phonon emission in a nanomechanical setup, resembling of the superradiance effect.

Cavity quantum interferences with three-level atoms

We discuss quantum interference phenomena in a system consisting from a laser driven three-level ladder-type emitter possessing orthogonal transition dipoles and embedded in a leaking optical resonator. The cavity mean-photon number vanishes due to the destructive nature of the interference phenomena. The effect occurs for some particular parameter regimes which were identified. Furthermore, upper bare-state population inversion occurs as well.

Phase dependence of the unnormalized second-order photon correlation function

We investigate the resonant quantum dynamics of a multi-qubit ensemble in a microcavity. Both the quantum-dot subsystem and the microcavity mode are pumped coherently. We found that the microcavity photon statistics depends on the phase difference of the driving lasers which is not the case for the photon intensity at resonant driving. This way, one can manipulate the two-photon correlations. In particular, higher degrees of photon correlations and, eventually, stronger intensities are obtained. Furthermore, the microcavity photon statistics exhibits steady-state oscillatory behaviors as well as asymmetries.

Phonon statistics in an acoustical resonator coupled to a pumped two-level emitter

The concept of an acoustical analog of the optical laser has been developed recently both in theoretical as well as experimental works. We discuss here a model of a coherent phonon generator with a direct signature of quantum properties of the sound vibrations. The considered setup is made of a laser driven quantum dot (QD) embedded in an acoustical nanocavity. The system's dynamics is solved for a single phonon mode in the steady-state and in the strong QD-phonon coupling regime beyond the secular approximation. We demonstrate that the phonon statistics exhibits quantum features, i.e. sub-Poissonian phonon statistics.

Cavity-output-field control via interference effects

We show how interference effects are responsible for manipulating the output electromagnetic field of an optical micro-resonator in the good-cavity limit. The system of interest consists in a moderately strongly pumped two-level emitter embedded in the optical cavity. When an additional weaker laser of the same frequency is pumping the combined system through one of the resonator's mirrors then the output cavity electromagnetic field can be almost completely suppressed or enhanced. This is due to the interference among the scattered light by the strongly pumped atom into the cavity mode and the incident weaker laser field. The result applies to photonic crystal environments as well.
