Revisiting the energy-momentum squared gravity

In this paper we have revisited the energy-momentum squared gravity theory, by taking into account the second derivative of the matter Lagrangian with respect to the metric, encapsulating relations originated from thermodynamical grounds. After obtaining the scalar tensor representation of the energy-momentum squared gravity with the new corrections, we have analyzed the physical implications by relying on the linear stability theory. The results show that the current cosmological system is compatible with the expansion of the Universe for some specific matter Lagrangians, explaining the emergence of matter domination era, approaching the late time accelerated expansion era close to the de-Sitter phenomenology.

Dynamical interplay between coupled scalar dark sectors and gravity

We explore a novel cosmological model based on coupled fields in the framework of scalar tensor theories, considering the specific interplay between gravity and scalar fields. The model further extends a recent axion-dilaton system by introducing viable couplings with the space--time geometry encoded into the scalar curvature. After briefly introducing the action and the corresponding field equations, we employ linear stability theory to investigate the physical properties. The analysis showed the compatibility of the current theoretical model with the recent history of the Universe, obtaining viable constraints for the model's parameters in some specific cases. In the present setup, the axion--dilaton system is non--minimally coupled with gravity in an independent manner, leading to distinct physical features in the phase-space structure, possible alleviating the cosmic coincidence problem.

Matter--Geometry interplay in new scalar tensor theories of gravity

The paper studies the possible interplay between matter and geometry in scalar tensor theories of gravitation where the energy--momentum tensor is directly coupled with the Einstein tensor. After obtaining the scalar tensor representation of the $f(R, G_{μν}T^{μν})$ gravity, the analysis continue with an approach based on the thermodynamics of irreversible processes in open systems. To this regard, various thermodynamic properties are directly obtained in this manner, like the matter creation (annihilation) rate and the corresponding creation (annihilation) pressure. In the case of the Roberson--Walker metric several analytic and numerical solutions are found in the asymptotic regime. In the last part of the manuscript a specific parametrization for the Hubble rate is constrained using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithms in the case of cosmic chronometers (CC) and BAO observations, obtaining an approximate numerical solution which can describe the cosmological model. For this model, we have obtained by fine--tuning some numerical solutions which exhibit creation mechanisms in different specific regimes.

Observational constraints for cubic gravity theory based on third order contractions of the Riemann tensor

The paper studies different observational features in the case of a specific cubic gravity theory, based on third order contractions of the Riemann tensor. Considering viable cosmic chronometers data, baryon acoustic oscillations, and supernovae, we analyze the viability of such a theoretical model, obtaining specific constraints for different parameters in the current scenario. It is shown that the present extension of the $Λ$CDM cosmological model is compatible with recent data sets. The results indicate that the dark energy equation of state is exhibiting a phantom regime in the near past in the case of the best fitted values, a behavior which is in agreement with various phenomenological studies.

The accelerated expansion in $F(G,T_{μν}T^{μν})$ gravity

In the present manuscript the basic Einstein--Hilbert cosmological model is extended, by adding a new functional $F(G, T_{μν}T^{μν})$ in the fundamental action, encoding specific geometrical effects due to a nontrivial coupling with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant ($G$), and the energy--momentum squared term ($T_{μν}T^{μν}$). After obtaining the corresponding gravitational field equations for the specific decomposition where $F(G, T_{μν}T^{μν})=f(G)+g(T_{μν}T^{μν})$, we have explored the physical features of the cosmological model by considering the linear stability theory, an important analytical tool in the cosmological theory which can reveal the dynamical characteristics of the phase space. The analytical exploration of the corresponding phase space structure revealed that the present model can represent a viable dark energy model, with various stationary points where the effective equation of state corresponds to a de--Sitter epoch, possible explaining the early and late time acceleration of the Universe.

Physical aspects of ${f}(R,G_{μν}T^{μν})$ modified gravity theories

The paper extends basic Einstein--Hilbert action by adding a newly proposed invariant constructed from a specific contraction between the Einstein tensor and the energy momentum tensor, encoding a non--minimal coupling between the space--time geometry and the matter fields. The fundamental Einstein--Hilbert action is extended by considering a generic function ${f}(R,G_{μν}T^{μν})$ which is further decomposed into its main constituents, a geometric component which depends on the scalar curvature, and a second element embedding the interplay between geometry and matter fields. Specific cosmological models are established at the level of background dynamics, based on particular couplings between the matter energy--momentum tensor and the Einstein tensor. After deducing the resulting field equations, the physical aspects for the cosmological model are investigated by employing a dynamical system analysis for various coupling functions. The investigation showed that the present model is compatible with different epochs in the evolution of our Universe, possible explaining various late time historical stages.

A two-field dark energy model with cubic contractions of the Riemann tensor

The paper proposes a novel cosmological model based on a two-field scenario, where the two fields are independently coupled with a specific invariant, based on cubic contractions of the Riemann tensor. After obtaining the modified Friedmann equations and the specific Klein-Gordon relations, the investigation studies the corresponding physical features by adopting the linear stability theory in a quintom scenario case where the coupling functions and potential energies have an exponential behavior. The corresponding investigation revealed a high complexity of the phase space structure, with various stationary points which can explain different aspects in the evolution of our Universe, the matter dominated epoch, and the late time accelerated stage. The present model can represent a viable solution to the dark energy problem due to the high complexity of the phase space and the existence of the scaling solutions.

Tachyonic cosmology with cubic contractions of the Riemann tensor

A new cosmological theory is proposed in the theoretical framework of modified gravity theories which is based on a tachyonic field non-minimally coupled with a specific topological invariant constructed with third order contractions of the Riemann tensor. After proposing the action of the cosmological model, the modified Friedmann relations and the Klein-Gordon equations are obtained, describing the corresponding geometrical corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action. The physical features of the cosmological system are investigated by adopting the dynamical system analysis in the case of an exponential function for the geometrical coupling term. The investigation revealed that the cosmological system can explain the current accelerated expansion of the Universe and the matter dominated epoch, showing a high compatibility to the recent history of our Universe for various values of the coupling coefficients.

Dark effects in $f(R,P)$ gravity

In the present paper a new cosmological model is proposed by extending the Einstein--Hilbert lagrangian with a generic functional $f(R,P)$, which depends on the scalar curvature $R$ and a term $P$ which encodes a possible influence from specific cubic contractions of the Riemann tensor. After proposing the corresponding action, the associated modified Friedmann relations are deduced, in the case where the generic functional has a power law decomposition, $f(R,P)=f_0 R^n+g_0 P^m$, with $f_0, g_0, n, m$ constant parameters. In this case the specific method of dynamical system analysis is employed, revealing the fundamental properties of the phase space structure, discussing the dynamical consequences for the cosmological solutions obtained. It is revealed that the cosmological solutions associated to the critical points can explain various dynamical eras, with a high sensitivity to the values of the $n$ and $m$ parameters, encoding various effects due to the geometrical nature of the specific couplings.

String-inspired Teleparallel Cosmology

The present paper represents an attempt for a very generic string inspired theory of gravitation, based on a stringy action in the teleparallel gravity which includes a specific functional which depends on the scalar field and its kinetic energy, as well as the torsion and boundary terms, embedding also possible effects from the teleparallel Gauss--Bonnet invariants. We focus our study on FLRW cosmology. After we deduce the cosmological equations for the associated generic theory of gravitation, we focus on string inspired couplings which are studied by considering different analytical techniques. The first analytical technique is based on the linear stability theory, by introducing proper dimensionless variables which enables us to study the structure of the phase space and the associated physical effects. In this case, we have obtained different cosmological solutions which correspond to matter and dark energy dominated solutions, achieving a possible transition between matter and dark energy dominated epochs. For each type of cosmological solutions, we have discussed the corresponding physical features, attaining viable constraints for the coupling constants due to dynamical effects. The dynamical study of the physical features included also a numerical analysis by fine--tuning the initial conditions deep into the matter era, obtaining possible trajectories for the effective equation of state for specific coupling functions.

Dynamical description of a quintom cosmological model nonminimally coupled with gravity

In this work we have studied a cosmological model based on a quintom dark energy model non-minimally coupled with gravity, endowed with a specfic potential energy of the exponential squared type. For this specific type of potential energy and non-minimal coupling, the dynamical properties are analyzed and the corresponding cosmological effects are discussed. Considering the linear stability method, we have investigated the dynamical properties of the phase space structure, determining the physically acceptable solutions. The analysis showed that in this model we can have various cosmological epochs, corresponding to radiation, matter domination, and de Sitter eras. Each solution is investigated from a physical and cosmological point of view, obtaining possible constraints of the model's parameters. In principle the present cosmological setup represent a possible viable scalar tensor theory which can explain various transitional effects related to the behavior of the dark energy equation of state and the evolution of the Universe at large scales.

Dynamical aspects for scalar fields coupled to cubic contractions of the Riemann tensor

The paper studies a new type of dark energy, a scalar field with positive or negative kinetic energy, generically coupled to a term which is composed by specific contractions of the Riemann tensor. After presenting the resulting field equations, we have analyzed the physical characteristics of the corresponding model by implementing the linear stability theory. In the case of an exponential coupling function and exponential potential energy we have deduced the phase space characteristics, analyzing the critical points obtained which can represent specific eras in the evolution of the Universe. The analytical study is showing that this model can represent a feasible cosmological setup, having various epochs which correspond to stiff-fluid, matter domination, and dark energy eras, pointing towards the emergence of the accelerated expansion as a geometrical effect.

A note on the dynamical features for the extended $f(P)$ cubic gravity

The paper studies the physical characteristics for the extended $f(P)$ cubic gravity from a transitive perspective based on dynamical system analysis, by considering the linear stability theory in two specific cases, corresponding to power-law $f(P)=f_0 P^α$ and exponential $f(P)=f_0 e^{αP}$ gravity types, where $f_0$ and $α$ are constant parameters. In these cases we have analyzed the effects in the phase space complexity, revealing the cosmological solutions attached to the critical points. For the power-law and exponential gravity types, we have noticed the presence of two cosmological epochs associated to the critical points involved, corresponding to de-Sitter eras and quintessence-like epochs, described by a constant effective equation of state. For all of these solutions we have studied the dynamical characteristics which are associated to the stability properties, determining possible constraints to various parameters from a transient perspective. The dynamical prospects asserted that the extended $f(P)$ cubic gravity can represent a promising modified theory of gravitation, leading to the manifestation of the accelerated expansion at late time evolution.

Dynamical system analysis of generalized energy-momentum-squared gravity

In this work we have investigated the dynamics of a recent modification to the general theory of relativity, the energy-momentum squared gravity model $f(R,\mathbf{T^2})$, where $R$ represents the scalar curvature and $\mathbf{T^2}$ the square of the energy-momentum tensor. By using dynamical system analysis for various types of gravity functions $f(R,\mathbf{T^2})$, we have studied the structure of the phase space and the physical implications of the energy-momentum squared coupling. In the first case of functional where $f(R,\mathbf{T^2})=f_0 R^n(\mathbf{T^2})^m$, with $f_0$ constant, we have shown that the phase space structure has a reduced complexity, with a high sensitivity to the values of the $m$ and $n$ parameters. Depending on the values of the $m$ and $n$ parameters, the model exhibits various cosmological epochs, corresponding to matter eras, solutions associated with an accelerated expansion, or decelerated periods. The second model studied corresponds to the $f(R,\mathbf{T^2})=αR^n+β\mathbf{(T^2)}^m$ form with $α, β$ constant parameters. In this case, a richer phase space structure is obtained which can recover different cosmological scenarios, associated to matter eras, de--Sitter solutions, and dark energy epochs. Hence, this model represents an interesting cosmological model which can explain the current evolution of the Universe and the emergence of the accelerated expansion as a geometrical consequence.

Generalized Tachyonic Teleparallel cosmology

In this paper we propose a new dark energy model in the teleparallel alternative of general relativity, by considering a generalized non--minimal coupling of a tachyonic scalar field with the teleparallel boundary term. Within the framework of teleparallel gravity, the boundary coupling term is associated with the divergence of the torsion vector. Considering the linear stability technique for various potentials and couplings, we have analyzed the dynamical properties of the present tachyonic dark energy model in the phase space, uncovering the corresponding essential dynamical features. Our study of the phase space structure revealed that for a specific class of potential energy, this model exhibits various critical points which are related to different cosmological behaviors, such as accelerated expansion and scaling solutions, determining the existence conditions and the corresponding physical features.

Generalised teleparallel quintom dark energy non-minimally coupled with the scalar torsion and a boundary term

Within this work, we propose a new generalised quintom dark energy model in the teleparallel alternative of general relativity theory, by considering a non-minimal coupling between the scalar fields of a quintom model with the scalar torsion component $T$ and the boundary term $B$. In the teleparallel alternative of general relativity theory, the boundary term represents the divergence of the torsion vector, $B=2\nabla_μT^μ$, and is related to the Ricci scalar $R$ and the torsion scalar $T$, by the fundamental relation: $R=-T+B$. We have investigated the dynamical properties of the present quintom scenario in the teleparallel alternative of general relativity theory by performing a dynamical system analysis in the case of decomposable exponential potentials. The study analysed the structure of the phase space, revealing the fundamental dynamical effects of the scalar torsion and boundary couplings in the case of a more general quintom scenario. Additionally, a numerical approach to the model is presented to analyse the cosmological evolution of the system.
