Thermoelectric efficiency of critical quantum junctions

We derive the efficiency at maximal power of a scale-invariant (critical) quantum junction in exact form. Both Fermi and Bose statistics are considered. We show that time-reversal invariance is spontaneously broken. For fermions we implement a new mechanism for efficiency enhancement above the Curzon-Ahlborn bound, based on a shift of the particle energy in each heat reservoir, proportional to its temperature. In this setting fermionic junctions can even reach at maximal power the Carnot efficiency. The bosonic junctions at maximal power turn out to be less efficient then the fermionic ones.

Luttinger Liquid in Non-equilibrium Steady State

We propose and investigate an exactly solvable model of non-equilibrium Luttinger liquid on a star graph, modeling a multi-terminal quantum wire junction. The boundary condition at the junction is fixed by an orthogonal matrix S, which describes the splitting of the electric current among the leads. The system is driven away from equilibrium by connecting the leads to heat baths at different temperatures and chemical potentials. The associated non-equilibrium steady state depends on S and is explicitly constructed. In this context we develop a non-equilibrium bosonization procedure and compute some basic correlation functions. Luttinger liquids with general anyon statistics are considered. The relative momentum distribution away from equilibrium turns out to be the convolution of equilibrium anyon distributions at different temperatures. Both the charge and heat transport are studied. The exact current-current correlation function is derived and the zero-frequency noise power is determined.

Quantum Wire Network with Magnetic Flux

The charge transport and the noise of a quantum wire network, made of three semi-infinite external leads attached to a ring crossed by a magnetic flux, are investigated. The system is driven away from equilibrium by connecting the external leads to heat reservoirs with different temperatures and/or chemical potentials. The properties of the exact scattering matrix of this configuration as a function of the momentum, the magnetic flux and the transmission along the ring are explored. We derive the conductance and the noise, describing in detail the role of the magnetic flux. In the case of weak coupling between the ring and the reservoirs, a resonant tunneling effect is observed. We also discover that a non-zero magnetic flux has a strong impact on the usual Johnson-Nyquist law for the pure thermal noise at small temperatures.

Exact relations between particle fluctuations and entanglement in Fermi gases

We derive exact relations between the Renyi entanglement entropies and the particle number fluctuations of spatial connected regions in systems of N noninteracting fermions in arbitrary dimension. We prove that the asymptotic large-N behavior of the entanglement entropies is proportional to the variance of the particle number. We also consider 1D Fermi gases with a localized impurity, where all particle cumulants contribute to the asymptotic large-N behavior of the entanglement entropies. The particle cumulant expansion turns out to be convergent for all integer-order Renyi entropies (except for the von Neumann entropy) and the first few cumulants provide already a good approximation. Since the particle cumulants are accessible to experiments, these relations may provide a measure of entanglement in these systems.

Entanglement Entropy of Quantum Wire Junctions

We consider a fermion gas on a star graph modeling a quantum wire junction and derive the entanglement entropy of one edge with respect to the rest of the junction. The gas is free in the bulk of the graph, the interaction being localized in its vertex and described by a non-trivial scattering matrix. We discuss all point-like interactions, which lead to unitary time evolution of the system. We show that for a finite number of particles N, the Renyi entanglement entropies of one edge grow as ln N with a calculable prefactor, which depends not only on the central charge, but also on the total transmission probability from the considered edge to the rest of the graph. This result is extended to the case with an harmonic potential in the bulk.

Entanglement entropies in free fermion gases for arbitrary dimension

We study the entanglement entropy of connected bipartitions in free fermion gases of N particles in arbitrary dimension d. We show that the von Neumann and Renyi entanglement entropies grow asymptotically as N^(1-1/d) ln N, with a prefactor that is analytically computed using the Widom conjecture both for periodic and open boundary conditions. The logarithmic correction to the power-law behavior is related to the area-law violation in lattice free fermions. These asymptotic large-N behaviors are checked against exact numerical calculations for N-particle systems.

The entanglement entropy of 1D systems in continuous and homogenous space

We introduce a systematic framework to calculate the bipartite entanglement entropy of a compact spatial subsystem in a one-dimensional quantum gas which can be mapped into a noninteracting fermion system. We show that when working with a finite number of particles N, the Renyi entanglement entropies grow as log N, with a prefactor that is given by the central charge. We apply this novel technique to the ground state and to excited states of periodic systems. We also consider systems with boundaries. We derive universal formulas for the leading behavior and for subleading corrections to the scaling. The universality of the results allows us to make predictions for the finite-size scaling forms of the corrections to the scaling.

Non-equilibrium Steady States of Quantum Systems on Star Graphs

Non-equilibrium steady states of quantum fields on star graphs are explicitly constructed. These states are parametrized by the temperature and the chemical potential, associated with each edge of the graph. Time reversal invariance is spontaneously broken. We study in this general framework the transport properties of the Schroedinger and the Dirac systems on a star graph, modeling a quantum wire junction. The interaction, which drives the system away from equilibrium, is localized in the vertex of the graph. All point-like vertex interactions, giving rise to self-adjoint Hamiltonians possibly involving the minimal coupling to a static electromagnetic field in the ambient space, are considered. In this context we compute the exact electric steady current and the non-equilibrium charge density. We investigate also the heat transport and derive the Casimir energy density away from equilibrium. The appearance of Friedel type oscillations of the charge and energy densities along the edges of the graph is established. We focus finally on the noise power and discuss the non-trivial impact of the point-like interactions on the noise.

The entanglement entropy of one-dimensional gases

We introduce a systematic framework to calculate the bipartite entanglement entropy of a spatial subsystem in a one-dimensional quantum gas which can be mapped into a noninteracting fermion system. To show the wide range of applicability of the proposed formalism, we use it for the calculation of the entanglement in the eigenstates of periodic systems, in a gas confined by boundaries or external potentials, in junctions of quantum wires and in a time-dependent parabolic potential.

Off-critical Luttinger Junctions

We investigate Luttinger junctions of quantum wires away from criticality. The one-body scattering matrix, corresponding to the off-critical boundary conditions at the junction, admits in general antibound and/or bound states. Their contribution to the theory is fixed by causality. The presence/absence of bound states determines the existence of two different regimes with inequivalent physical properties. A scattering matrix without bound states defines an isolated equilibrium system. Bound states instead drive the system away from equilibrium, giving raise to non-trivial incoming or outgoing energy flows in the junction. We derive in both regimes and in explicit form the electromagnetic conductance tensor, pointing out the different impact of bound and antibound states.

Quantum wire junctions breaking time reversal invariance

We explore the possibility to break time reversal invariance at the junction of quantum wires. The universal features in the bulk of the wires are described by the anyon Luttinger liquid. A simple necessary and sufficient condition for the breaking of time reversal invariance is formulated in terms of the scattering matrix at the junction. The phase diagram of a junction with generic number of wires is investigated in this framework. We give an explicit classification of those critical points which can be reached by bosonization and study the interplay between their stability and symmetry content.

Junctions of anyonic Luttinger wires

We present an extended study of anyonic Luttinger liquids wires jointing at a single point. The model on the full line is solved with bosonization and the junction of an arbitrary number of wires is treated imposing boundary conditions that preserve exact solvability in the bosonic language. This allows to reach, in the low momentum regime, some of the critical fixed points found with the electronic boundary conditions. The stability of all the fixed points is discussed.

Correlation functions of one-dimensional anyonic fluids

A universal description of correlation functions of one-dimensional anyonic gapless systems in the low-momentum regime is presented. We point out a number of interesting features, including universal oscillating terms with frequency proportional to the statistical parameter and beating effects close to the fermion points. The results are applied to the one-dimensional anyonic Lieb-Liniger model and checked against the exact results in the impenetrable limit.

Bosonization and Vertex Algebras with Defects

The method of bosonization is extended to the case when a dissipationless point-like defect is present in space-time. Introducing the chiral components of a massless scalar field, interacting with the defect in two dimensions, we construct the associated vertex operators. The main features of the corresponding vertex algebra are established. As an application of this framework we solve the massless Thirring model with defect. We also construct the vertex representation of the sl(2) Kac-Moody algebra, describing the complex interplay between the left and right sectors due to the interaction with the defect. The Sugawara form of the energy-momentum tensor is also explored.

Aspects of Finite Temperature Quantum Field Theory in a Black Hole Background

We quantize a scalar field at finite temperature T in the background of a classical black hole, adopting 't Hooft's ``brick wall'' model with generic mixed boundary conditions at the brick wall boundary. We first focus on the exactly solvable case of two dimensional space-time. As expected, the energy density is integrable in the limit of vanishing brick wall thickness only for T=T_H - the Hawking temperature. Consistently with the most general stress energy tensor allowed in this background, the energy density shows a surface contribution localized on the horizon. We point out that the usual divergences occurring in the entropy of the thermal atmosphere are due to the assumption that the third law of thermodynamics holds for the quantum field in the black hole background. Such divergences can be avoided if we abandon this assumption. The entropy density also has a surface term localized on the horizon, which is open to various interpretations. The extension of these results to higher space-time dimensions is briefly discussed.

Quantum Field Theories and Critical Phenomena on Defects

We construct and investigate quantum fields induced on a d-dimensional dissipationless defect by bulk fields propagating in a (d+1)-dimensional space. All interactions are localized on the defect. We derive a unitary non-canonical quantum field theory on the defect, which is analyzed both in the continuum and on the lattice. The universal critical behavior of the underlying system is determined. It turns out that the O(N)-symmetric phi^4 theory, induced on the defect by massless bulk fields, belongs to the universality class of particular d-dimensional spin models with long-range interactions. On the other hand, in the presence of bulk mass the critical behavior crossovers to the one of d-dimensional spin models with short-range interactions.

The Role of Initial Conditions in Presence of Extra Dimensions

Quantum field theory in 4+1 dimensional bulk space with boundary, representing a 3-brane, is considered. We study the impact of the initial conditions in the bulk on the field dynamics on the brane. We demonstrate that these conditions determine the Kaluza-Klein measure. We also establish the existence of a rich family of quantum fields on the brane, generated by the same bulk action, but corresponding to different initial conditions. A simple classification of these fields is proposed and it is shown that some of them lead to ultraviolet finite theories, which have some common features with strings.

Local Fields on the Brane Induced by Nonlocal Fields in the Bulk

We investigate quantum field theory in a bulk space with boundary, which represents a 3-brane. Both flat and anti-de Sitter backgrounds are considered. The basic idea is to keep local commutativity only on the brane, giving up this requirement in the bulk. We explore the consequences of this proposal, constructing a large family of nonlocal bulk fields, whose brane relatives are local. We estimate the ultraviolet behavior of these local brane fields, characterizing a subfamily which generates renormalizable theories on the brane. The issue of brane conformal invariance and the relation between bulk and brane conserved currents are also examined in this framework.
