Decorrelation of neural networks from particle lifetimes in the LHCb topological $b$ trigger

The LHCb topological beauty trigger is the primary set of algorithms for selecting collision events containing $b$-hadrons in the fully software-based LHCb trigger. The algorithms apply monotonic Lipschitz neural networks (NNs) to select vertices of charged particles consistent with the distinct topology of a $b$ decay, i.e., those with large lifetimes and transverse momentum. Many analyses of the events recorded require that the selection must be unbiased with respect to the $b$-hadron lifetime at large lifetimes. Accurate reconstruction is challenging in busier detector environments, in which several visible proton-proton collisions occur simultaneously per bunch crossing, such that misassociation of decay products can result in vertices with artificially large measured lifetimes. This paper presents two approaches to mitigate correlations between NN scores and candidate lifetimes at large lifetime, and evaluates the performance of the resulting models.

A Comprehensive Bandwidth Testing Framework for the LHCb Upgrade Trigger System

The LHCb experiment at CERN has undergone a comprehensive upgrade, including a complete re-design of the trigger system into a hybrid-architecture, software-only system that delivers ten times more interesting signals per unit time than its predecessor. This increased efficiency - as well as the growing diversity of signals physicists want to analyse - makes conforming to crucial operational targets on bandwidth and storage capacity ever more challenging. To address this, a comprehensive, automated testing framework has been developed that emulates the entire LHCb trigger and offline-processing software stack on simulated and real collision data. Scheduled both nightly and on-demand by software testers during development, these tests measure the online- and offline-processing's key operational performance metrics (such as rate and bandwidth), for each of the system's 4000 distinct physics selection algorithms, and their cumulative totals. The results are automatically delivered via concise summaries - to GitLab merge requests and instant messaging channels - that further link to an extensive dashboard of per-algorithm information. The dashboard and pages therein facilitate test-driven trigger development by 100s of physicists, whilst the concise summaries enable efficient, data-driven decision-making by management and software maintainers. This novel bandwidth-testing framework has been helping LHCb build an operationally-viable trigger and data-processing system whilst maintaining the efficiency to satisfy its physics goals.

Compatibility and combination of world W-boson mass measurements

The compatibility of W-boson mass measurements performed by the ATLAS, LHCb, CDF, and D0 experiments is studied using a coherent framework with theory uncertainty correlations. The measurements are combined using a number of recent sets of parton distribution functions (PDF), and are further combined with the average value of measurements from the Large Electron-Positron collider. The considered PDF sets generally have a low compatibility with a suite of global rapidity-sensitive Drell-Yan measurements. The most compatible set is CT18 due to its larger uncertainties. A combination of all mW measurements yields a value of mW = 80394.6 +- 11.5 MeV with the CT18 set, but has a probability of compatibility of 0.5% and is therefore disfavoured. Combinations are performed removing each measurement individually, and a 91% probability of compatibility is obtained when the CDF measurement is removed. The corresponding value of the W boson mass is 80369.2 +- 13.3 MeV, which differs by 3.6 sigma from the CDF value determined using the same PDF set.

The role of multi-parton interactions in doubly-heavy hadron production

Beauty and charm quarks are ideal probes of pertubative Quantum Chromodymanics in proton-proton collisions, owing to their large masses. In this paper the role of multi-parton interactions in the production of doubly-heavy hadrons is studied using simulation samples generated with Pythia, a Monte Carlo event generator. Comparisons are made to the stand-alone generators BcVegPy and GenXicc. New methods of speeding up Pythia simulations for events containing heavy quarks are described, enabling the production of large samples with multiple heavy-quark pairs. We show that significantly higher production rates of doubly-heavy hadrons are predicted in models that allow heavy quarks originating from different parton-parton interactions (within the same hadron-hadron collision) to combine to form such hadrons. Quantitative predictions are sensitive to the modelling of colour reconnections. We suggest a set of experimental measurements capable of differentiating these additional contributions.

A simple method to determine charge-dependent curvature biases in track reconstruction in hadron collider experiments

A new data-driven method, using $Z \rightarrow μ^+ μ^-$ decays, is proposed to correct for charge-dependent curvature biases in spectrometer experiments at hadron colliders. The method is studied assuming a detector with a "forward-spectrometer" geometry similar to that of the LHCb experiment, and is shown to reliably control several simplified detector mis-alignment configurations. The applicability of the method for use in measurements of precision electroweak observables is evaluated.

Simultaneously determining the $W^{\pm}$ boson mass and parton shower model parameters

We explore the possibility of simultaneously determining the $W$ boson mass, $m_{W}$, and QCD-related nuisance parameters that affect the $W$ boson $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ spectrum from a fit to the $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ spectrum of the muon in the leptonic decay $W\rightarrowμν$. The study is performed using pseudodata generated using Pythia and the muon is required to fall in a kinematic region corresponding to the approximate acceptance of the LHCb detector. We find that the proposed method performs well and has little trouble disentangling variations in the muon $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ spectrum due to $m_{W}$ from those due to the $W$ boson $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ model.

Understanding and constraining the PDF uncertainties in a W boson mass measurement with forward muons at the LHC

Precision electroweak tests are a powerful probe of physics beyond the Standard Model, but the sensitivity is limited by the precision with which the $W$ boson mass ($M_W$) has been measured. The Parton Distribution Function (PDF) uncertainties are a potential limitation for measurements of $M_W$ with LHC data. It has recently been pointed out that, thanks to LHCb's unique forward rapidity acceptance, a new measurement of $M_W$ by LHCb can improve this situation. Here we report on a detailed study on the mechanism driving the PDF uncertainty in the LHCb measurement of $M_W$, and propose an approach which should reduce this uncertainty by roughly a factor of two using LHCb Run 2 data.

LHC results on tree-level beauty decays

Tree-level $b$ decays play a critical role in characterising the quark flavour sector, and exposing possible effects of physics beyond the Standard Model. These proceedings cover recent results from the LHCb experiment on semileptonic $b$ baryon decays, $\mathcal{R}(D^{\ast-})$ using three-prong hadronic $τ$ decays, $CP$ observables in $B^- \to D^{(\ast)}h^-$ decays, and an updated combination on the CKM angle $γ$.

LHCb PDF measurements

The LHCb experiment covers a unique region of acceptance at forward rapidities in the high energy proton-proton collisions of the LHC. This means that measurements of particle production in LHCb are directly sensitive to the parton distribution functions at low Björken-$x$ values. Several measurements of inclusive $W$ and $Z/γ^{\ast}$ production with the Run-I dataset are reported in these proceedings. Further measurements of $W$ and $Z/γ^{\ast}$ production in association with inclusive jets and $b$- and $c$-tagged jets are also reported.

LHCb CP violation

The study of $CP$ violation in the beauty hadron sector is a promising approach to search for the effects of physics beyond the Standard Model. Several recent measurements in this area from the LHCb experiment are reported in these proceedings. These are based on the Run-I dataset of 3~fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at proton-proton centre of mass energies of 7 and 8~TeV.

Prospects for improving the LHC W boson mass measurement with forward muons

Measurements of the $W$ boson mass are planned by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, but for the time being, these may be unable to compete with the current world average precision of 15~MeV, due to uncertainties in the PDFs. We discuss the potential of a measurement by the LHCb experiment based on the charged lepton transverse momentum $p_T^{\ell}$ spectrum in $W \to μν$ decays. The unique forward acceptance of LHCb means that the PDF uncertainties would be anti-correlated with those of $p_T^{\ell}$ based measurements by ATLAS and CMS. We compute an average of ATLAS, CMS and LHCb measurements of $m_W$ from the $p_T^{\ell}$ distribution. Considering PDF uncertainties, this average is a factor of 1.3 more precise than an average of ATLAS and CMS alone. Despite the relatively low rate of $W$ production in LHCb, we estimate that with the Run-II dataset, a measurement could be performed with sufficient experimental precision to exploit this anti-correlation in PDF uncertainties. The modelling of the lepton-pair transverse momentum distribution in the neutral current Drell-Yan process could be a limiting factor of this measurement and will deserve further studies.

LHCb Semileptonic Asymmetry

A recent LHCb measurement of the CP violating flavour specific asymmetry in $B_s^0$ decays, \asls, is presented. This measurement is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ $=$ 7 TeV, collected during the 2011 run of the LHC. The result is $\asls = (-0.24 \pm 0.54_{\rm stat} \pm 0.33_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-2}$, which is the most precise measurement of this quantity to date and agrees with the Standard Model prediction.}

Single W and Z boson production properties and asymmetries

Recent analyses of single $W$ and $Z$ boson production properties and asymmetries from the CDF and DØ experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron are reported. For $W$ boson production, measurements of the production and lepton charge asymmetries are presented. For $Z/γ^*$ production, the following measurements are presented: $dσ/dy$, $(1/σ) (dσ/dp_T)$, $(1/σ) (dσ/d\phistar)$, lepton angular coefficients, and $A_{FB}$ with extraction of $\sin^2θ_W$ and the light quark couplings to the $Z$. Most of these measurements are in good agreement with QCD predictions.

A measurement of the muon charge asymmetry in W boson events

A recent measurement by the D0 Collaboration, of the charge asymmetry of muons in $W\rightarrowμν$ events is discussed. Using 4.9 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the D0 detector, the muon charge asymmetry, $A(η)$, where $η$ is the muon pseudorapidity, is measured inclusively and in two bins of muon transverse momentum, \ptmu. After being corrected for background contamination and detector effects (resolution and acceptance), the data are compared to NLO QCD predictions with CTEQ 6.6 PDFs. For inclusive \ptmu, reasonable agreement is observed. However, the prediction fails to describe the data in bins of \ptmu. In most $η$ bins, the data are more precise than the predictions, and will provide tight constraints on future PDFs.

Cosmic Neutrino Last Scattering Surface

Neutrinos decoupled from the rest of the cosmic plasma when the Universe was less than one second old, far earlier than the photons which decoupled at t=380,000 years. Surprisingly, though, the last scattering surface of the neutrinos is much closer to us than that of the photons. Here we calculate the properties of the last scattering surfaces of the three species of neutrinos.
